I think it's got that silly activation which came with Crysis 2. Fire up the proxy if you'd like to play this when you recieve the game. :/

The FFB complaints are what makes this an absolute no go for me.

I'll be honest, I kind of enjoyed the original Shift when I first bought it and played with a 360 controller. But when I bought a G27, that's when I was done with it. The FFB was awful. And this was before rfactor tainted my racing standards.

There's a tonne of jaggies and some unusual gray sheen on the cars...

you know, i think you are right. i thought it at first but then thought i was just spoiled by GT5. but the more i play the more i think this is a step back from 1. it's been a long time (so correct me if i'm wrong), but didn't shift 1 have some wicked tearing and some minor frame rate issues. maybe they scaled it back to get better performance. i think it may not look as good but if i remember correctly it does perform better. the cars look almost kind of cell shaded to me at certain times. i am really enjoying this game though so it doesn't matter. i do miss all the different things you could get badges for in the first one though (overtake, etc). it seems there are only three types of badges now (mastering tracks, winning events, and rivals or something like that). still, great game in my opinion.

The helmet cam makes it harder than it should to handle imo.. I only did the first two races but I had a hard time with the cam finding my way on the road.
I will say it handles better than the first shift, since that one the demo was enough to turn me off.

as for the graphics (360) yes the IQ is worse with the jaggies and whatnot but there definitely seems to be a better lighting solution going on. MUCH better daylight IMO.

Also switching back to Cockpit cam from helmet cam seems to improve the look.

Overall they fixed the issues i had with S1 and I like the game better but do miss the aggressive driving medals and think they complicated the report screens and menus too much.

shift was very nice in that regard.

Shift 2 definitely looks worse than Shift 1. I noticed that myself immediately.

Shift 1 has much more natural looking lighting imo. It looks hazy in Shift 2.

I'm friggin' loving this game! The naysayers can go count their jaggies and fap over which graphical effect or element they hate the most. This is one fantastic and fun racer. The Autolog makes it just as addictive as Hot Pursuit. Great stuff.

I saw a good comparison, not my pictures. Posted on another forum by a poster called ASSPOP.

Fuuuuu.

This time it's a good thing EA took forever to get it on Steam. I would have preordered without question.

What a POS. Hope there's a god patch coming.

Man, its a hard pill to swallow to see those comparison pics. But I have the game waiting on my desk at work and still can't wait to see how this handles in motion.

BTW - the Video posted a few posts above didn't seem arcadey to me at all. When I think arcade I think Burnout, Motorstorm, Hot Pursuit, etc.

Is definitely not like burnout or hot pursuit specially in the pro/elite driving model

It's all relative, but as a hardcore fan of sim racers, I feel that unmodified SHIFT might as well be Hot Pursuit.

And it manages to run worse than shift 1?
Maybe the unified and improved physics model took some more resources and something had to give. Did they redo the lighting too to better incorporate night driving?

Speaking of which, I read that not all tracks have night versions - does anybody which tracks can't be raced at night?

How does this run on PS3?

My PS3's dead and getting replaced tomorrow, and GT5 is stuck in there so I won't be with a racing game for a while. Was thinking of picking this up while I wait for Sony to send me GT back.

i don't mind the graphics downgrade since the gameplay is so much better than shift 1. and i liked shift 1. this one is just so much better. i told myself that i wasn't going to buy this until a price drop but i am damned glad i did. i'm having more fun with this game than i did with gran turismo 5 or forza 3. got bored of those really quick. i really don't think this is a sim. it's a wonderfully unique arcade racer. and it's the only racer that i use the cockpit view in. i usually use a behind the car/3rd person perspective.

I am having an absolute blast with the 360 version, the new helmet cam took awhile to get accustomed to but man does it make the game feel so much more intense. As far a graphics go, I personally think it looks great. Its not Hot Pursuit pretty but in my opinion looks better than Forza 3.

GT5 syndrome?

Haha, touche, yeah, pretty much :D

However, I am having a great time, I agree it is very unique game in terms of structure and context. And I agree with Saladine's initial impressions so far (drived D and C class) that this game is massive improvement over first Shift in many areas.

No way this game is arcadey. It isn't super sim but by God it's very close and very enjoyable.
You can't take corners like a maniac, you have to brake. You can't floor it on turn, you will lose control. It's best you shift down into a corner using heal toe, otherwise the car becomes unstable.
There's no swaying, there's snap over steer, there's understeer, there's drafting, there's pitching, there's rolling, there's squating, there's loss of grip over crests and on and on..

Another thing I love, upgrades have a massive effect on turning a sedate car into a wild, roaring true racing machine. It truly can change the character of a car. I mean, if you add heaps of engine upgrades in effect making your car a horsepower hero without adding driveline upgrades such as a metier clutch..etc, the clutch starts to slip!
Where recently have you played a game where that is simulated?

I've said it before and i'll say it again, SHIFT offers the most immersive racing experience yet. It truly feels like you are involved in motorsport. The a.i is grueling, ready to hunt you down whenever you make a mistake. You can hear them breathing down your neck at every turn. You have to be on your toes at all times. You have to work extra hard to regain that position you just lost because the competition is also out there to win and they won't make it easy for you.
The cockpit view is involving, it upgrades as you upgrade the car. Motec systems, gauges, steering wheels, seats, roll bars..etc all become visible giving that authentic race car look and feel....

Imo, you have to leave previous biases and prejudices behind if you choose to play this game. There's a load of sim elements in the game but if you treat it more like a racing simulator rather than a driving simulator you would love it to bits!

I can live with this. GT5 for the driving simulator (and smooth driving), Shift for the racing simulator (and pooping your pants with speed).

Shift 1 is my favorite current gen sim racer.

This news saddens me. Please, someone tell me those cockpit shots are just unflattering. I love cockpit view in Shift 1, and is IMO, the best sim racing experience (with mid level cars). Too bad it fell apart on the high end cars.

Still, I gotta hold out hope. If this isn't good then I basically don't have another sim racer available to me for the forseeable future. I'm not buying Patch Turismo 5 and I've 100% Forza 3.

in hindsight i should not have used the word arcade i guess. it's just a really unique racer to me. i am bored shitless with sim racers. this one is really fun and the races are exciting. i'm not used to that in a sim racer. usually they are car collector sims instead of racing.

Regarding the graphics/Aliasing, could it somehow be related to their new deferred lightning engine ( night racing more lights). At least I think I have seen it mentioned in interviews as being a deferred pipeline, which could explain complete lack of AA, as MSAA is way to taxing and I do not see any TAA (blur) and Shift 1 with some MSAA (was it 4x?) looking "better".

Still one day left before I can give it a go, hate those different release dates in a day were so much goes through DD :(

If you loved Shift 1 then you will love this. The handling is better, the car list is great IMO, the inclusion of night driving is awesome and it looks great in motion.

anyone who turned off helmet cam in the first 15 minutes, I suggest trying it again off and on for several days... it is starting to connect for me now and it is very cool...

yes lighting solution is better, night racing is sweet but the downgrade in Anti-aliasing is noticeable but not game breaking

Yep. This game is all about immersion and sense of speed. The McLaren race was almost too much! My heart rate seriously increased.

Nitpicking over screen shots completely misses the point.

It is interesting how polarized are the opinions of this game. This thread is a drama rollercoaster.
I quite liked shift 1 It is in a sweet spot between semi-sims like Forza or F1 2010 and arcades like NFS or Burnout.
I guess I will like shift 2.

dammit, I'm guessing consoles versions have 0 or 2xAA. :(

but yes deferred rendering

Yeah, but PC performance bugs drive me crazy. I'm OCD about them. I'll google shit in other languages just to try and find someone who found a config file fix or something. I can't sit down and enjoy it until it runs like it should. I'm always distracted by the bugs.

That said, I still remember enjoying Shift 1 with the early bugs (25fps no matter what settings or res). A friend owes me a Steam game. Trying to decide between this or Portal 2.

Are the perf problems like the ones I described or can they actually be fixed by turning down effects?

The 370Z has so many things wrong with it in the game...

-Wrong Power Stats
-Wrong Engine & Exhaust Note
-WTF is that fake lip spoiler on trunk? That doesn't exist on the car.
-Car handles awkwardly
-Car accelerates significantly faster in game than real life (I own one).

Like I said, canned physics.

borrowed from B3D..
the PS3 version is apparently using MLAA... I believe the bottom comparison shot is the 360 version, which is supposedly using MSAAx4.

If you are at all interested I would suggest keeping an eye on forums at nogripracing.com and virtualr.net. They are usually some of the first places to release PC mods for Shift. There has been talks of porting cars and tracks from Shift 2 into Shift 1. This in addition to the cars ported from Forza 3 gives the game a pretty strong selection. However, the modding process is not exactly the easiest task in the world, at least in my experiences.

I would expect an overhaul of the physics and FFB in a month or two.
