Shin Megami Tensei 1 coming to iOS in English ($7.99, March 18th)

I'm happy that were getting it finally released in English here after how long.it's been never released over here, kinda wish it was a better version that didn't have the GBA soundtrack. But I can still enjoy it, though my question is it only on the iphone or can I play it on the ipad too.

The app listing says it's compatible with both iPhones and iPads.

So is this the first time for the first SMT to be released in NA?

Yep, first time any of those games from that era made it here.

the SNES SMT1 and 2 have been fan translated, pretty damn good versions too imo, but I really am excited that this may lead to a localized version of SMT If...

I'm cracking up at this early walkthrough from the site.

I guess they know today's player doesn't know you're supposed to talk to everyone in an RPG.

The obtuse roadblocks actually come much later in the game as I recall, I think around the time you have to collect a jar.

Nice. Hope there's an Android release soon as well.

This version is based on the GBA version. It isn't exactly fully emulated, but it's pretty faithful to it. The most disappointing thing about it is that the music is OGG files but it's recorded from the GBA version, they could have done it with the PSX version's music. Either way, it's much better than the SNES version, and this will become the version of SMT1 I recommend to English speakers in the future.

I hesitate to contradict you, because you definitely know your onions, but my understanding (and I just double-checked) is that the iOS version's music is indeed recorded from the PSX game's.

Whoa. This is one of the games for which I was about to break down and just English patch a ROM. Wonder if they plan to release the localization for any other platforms. Atlus has recognized a sustainable niche for MegaTen games overseas, particularly on PlayStation hardware and Nintendo handhelds. I guess that would have to happen with another general re-release of the game.

Anyway, I guess I was right to hold off on SMT4.

The GBA version is actually what I would call the definitive version of the game. The music isn't as nice, and it doesn't have smooth scrolling in dungeons, but it has other extras that are great, including the vision quests.

Also I would point out that the controls aren't that bad due to the kind of game this is. It's not like it's a top-down grid-based RPG with a virtual dpad. Since it's first-person, you just have to tap directions to move and it actually works out fine. For the record, I played and beat this version in Japanese.

Is it completely turn-based?

The music in that trailer is the PSX one isnt it?
It would be interesting if they ended up replacing the music. It shouldn't be that hard to do. I was thinking about doing it myself with the JP version, but it would rely on being jailbroken.

Also for those curious about the UI and stuff in this version, I did begin logging a playthrough of it which is index here, although I didn't end up finishing making the posts due to lack of interest. Still, you can see lots of stuff there.

I would rather play this on my GBA to be honest. Not because I've got anything against the touch controls but because it'd look crisp on that screen. The fact that there's a translated GBA version out there now is quite painful really. :/

Good to hear Nich. Any idea if a 3ds or a vita version might happen?

Experience the awful perspective and unfair difficulty now on your phone.

this is by far the easiest SMT game

Indeed, 100% turn based:

This is pretty great because in general there are so few dungeon crawler JRPGs on iOS. I looked for some a while ago and didn't find any, but I think I heard recently that one was coming out soon?

That's excellent news. I bought the JP iOS version at release and it was the GBA version's. I wouldn't be surprised even if they changed that in an update to the JP version. I just haven't checked it out since back then. Thanks for letting us know!

I don't care about Shin Megami Tensei personally, but if this is a localized GBA ROM in a wrapper or something, there's an interesting possibility of a Virtual Console release somewheres down the line.

I may have to do the thing that I said that I would never do...but an Ipad..
(I have been getting the urge for Warhammer 40k also)

Ugh, of course, after all these years it comes on a platform I really don't care about.
Well, I guess it's nice for everyone else.

Siliconera also says it'll be 7.99 USD and coming on March 18th.
The Japanese version costs 1400 JPY which would be 11.99 USD going by the pricing matrix, but instead it'll be 7.99 USD which would be 900 JPY.

Tried to update my previous posts to reflect the music change. That's a pretty big deal and it addresses the main issue I had with this version from the start. I hope people don't get any misinformation based on what I said earlier.

Good. That should mitigate the problem with virtual buttons. I'm still kind of disappointed the whole UI isn't reorganized around touch menu control though.

WHY only iOS? :(

They need to put this on the PSN/eshop .

They'd have to actually port the game to modern Sony and Nintendo systems though, which they haven't done. This is just the GBA version in an emulation wrapper which they'd already released in Japanese a while ago.

According to the update notes BGM and sound effect quality were improved after release.

Nice. I've been reading and watching videos about the wider SMT series recently, my only experience so far has been Persona. So this is perfectly timed.

Embassy and Cathedral being huge upgrades cuz they are no longer just short songs that loop forever

this is first person, right? is it nauseating at all, for those who are sensitive to it? i played the etrian odyssey 4 3ds demo and it made me ill. it sucks that i'm missing out on so many good games from the past.

It might not make you ill because the scrolling is not smooth like it is in EO4. I'd say watch a video of SMT1 GBA and see how it feels.

So this will be my first smartphone game ever. Wish it was coming to Android too, hmm, might have to get a cheap ipad.
