Go see Closer before you knock Natalie Portman for being a bad actress. She deserves the Golden Globe and Oscar nod.
that's a great point. i wish i would have said this.

I find it hard to believe that she learned how to act overnight, and that you guys aren't giving her a little too much extra credit because she's such a fanboy favorite. Most critics have no capacity to judge a performance, and the awards committees have even less -- and that's when their agendas aren't getting in the way.

That said, I'll inevitably watch Closer when it comes out on DVD, and if she sucks in it, you'll hear it from me!

Oh goody, the best of both worlds. Jude and Natalie

:lol :lol :lol

On a side note, I saw Napoleon Dynamite over the weekend and I must've completely missed the point because I really didn't find it funny. Worse than that was that in some scenes it just felt inappropriate or made me feel uncomfortable.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
The ONLY worthwhile sequence in Without a Paddle were the dialogue quips made by the native american river scout to the boyz just before they head out on their post-adolescent vacation of inane retreaded hijinx. I saw it for free and STILL felt robbed, not fun or funny.

What's up with the Jude Law hate?

He was great in both Gattaca and The Talented Mr.Ripley. He was also interesting in A.I.

I thought Closer, not Garden State, was the movie that proved Natalie Portman couldn't act.

Actually, I didn't think it was all her fault. She was hopelessly miscast, as was Julia Roberts.

At any rate, whenever I watch Natalie act, I get the distinct impression that she's TRYING REALLY HARD.

Oh, save your money. Closer is two hours of trite pointless garbage, and it's Clive Owen that has a captivating performance there, not Portman, Roberts, or Law; and the reasons you seemed to hate GS are only exemplified a thousand time more in Closer. It's paper thin, jumbled, and a mess. Much as I wanted to like Closer, I couldn't rally behind it for the life of me and I strongly suspect based on some of your comments and criticisms of other movies that you're going to loathe the movie more than the others combined.

I personally adored GS, but I've never seen Sky Captain though, coincidentally, I nabbed it this weekend alongside GS and a handful of other movies with the $300+ of Blockbuster credit I had from trading in more than half of my PS2 and GameCube games. I'm not expecting anything but a shallow, amusing time, and frankly, I think I'm on the right path with that one. I mean, hell, it was going to be that or Hero.

There can be no good movie which highlights professional stripping. Ignatz' Law of Film.
It's really just a scene in the film, she backslides into a previous lifestyle. I liked Closer a lot, and I agree that Owen really stole the film with his performance, but Portman's was great too.

God I hated the first hour of Sky Captain so fucking much. I wouldn't know about the second hour. "Nostalgic for the FF movie" more or less sums it up. Uggggh.

Jude Law was good for 30 seconds as a child molestor in The Aviator. You can't deny that.
:lol I haven't seen the movie, but that's funny as hell.

GAF at its best! Don't watch Closer! Jude Law sucks! Watch Without a Paddle! See National Lampoon's flicks!

Next thing you know, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf becomes pointless trite garbage.

It's only 7:50 a.m. and this thread has already made my day, just for bringing me the words "blackesque" and "hate-shrapnel."

Also, Natalie Portman was good in her three minutes as Pacino's crazy daughter in Heat. "I CAN'T FIND MY BARRETTES!"

I don't see how someone who has a pet cemetary in their yard and is prone to siezures is a "troubled free spirit". I'd say Portman was fine in GS, it's just that the film itself is rather meh.

Also, I've never felt more lost in my life than the first five or ten minutes of Sky Captain. Surely someone fucking watched it before it was released right?

Wha? People hatin' on Jude Law?

No love for eXistenZ? or Gattaca? or The Talented Mr. Ripley? or Road to Perdition? or Cold Mountain? or even fucking Enemy at the Gates?

What the hell is wrong with you people?

I don't hate Jude Law. He's a good actor. It's just that he was a total ponce in Sky Captain. Hey, the movie also made Angelina Jolie's giant boobs irrelevant. It was simply a BAD MOVIE, and Jude was in it.

Sky Captain was fun and corny.. I went to it hoping for an old Flash Gordon like serial.. that'w aht I got. I was happy...

Garden State I greatly enjoyed. Thought it was just a wonderful movie. The soundtrack (actual CD) could possibly be the greatest licensed soundtrack ever created. End of story.

in portman's defense she just didn't have much to work with. most of the problem with garden state is that it HAD nothing but cardboard cutouts for characters, and too many "this is me copying great cinema" moments. it's just not a very good movie. promising, yah, but so very empty.

not in portman's defense, she hasn't acted since leon, honestly. note i haven't seen closer.

i think she can act, if the moon is in the right phase or whatever, but she hasn't, and when she gets paid SO MUCH to basically do nothing in star wars, i can kind of see why.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I actually attempted watching Garden State past the first five minutes. Girl was over, I thought "She'll dig this shit, girls love this movie."

And I admit, we both laughed at some points (suit of armor for one) but at about the 55 minute mark she said "yeah, this movie sucks." For 54:59 I'd been waiting for that, and hey, I turned it off.

The movie had promise, and the directing was alright (really, bordering on mediocre), but the acting. Jesus.

"Hey"
"sup"
"your mom died"
"yeah"
":D lol!!!"
"...."
"kegger over at my place"
"cool"

Between the wooden acting by EVERYONE and the dialogue that was painful at best, a movie with some visual and entertainment promise turned into a borefest.

Fuckin' hell.

At least the soundtrack is tolerable.

Drinky: Seeing as you're a poster who's opinion I highely respect (from the well guarded shadows of lurkerdom) I'd be really interested to hear what you're thoughts are on Denzel Washington as an actor. I know it's a very random question for me to ask but your various other ideas about acting talent in this thread shocked me, and I'm curious what you think about probably my favorite actor.

Funny. Yea, I didn't see Shakespear in Love, but I have a profound suspicion that Elizabeth was robbed as best picture, as was Cate Blanchette. Anyone see both films and have an opinion on this? (yea, right..)
I agree with you 100%. Elizabeth was a fucking powerful film.
