Shmups Are The Best Genre You Don’t Play

AJUMP23

Parody of actual AJUMP23
Snoot 'em up. Top down, typically 2d, autoscrolling. You typically fly a plane or space ship or some such and show other places or space ships and the occasional full screen bosses. Also called bullet hell shooters. I am not a fan of this genre.
Thank you.

bullet hell is part of it. there is shmups that focus on obstacle such as gradius and R-type. then faster bullet and encounter design such as Raiden 1 - 5 or Raystorm or 1999 strikers. annd then Bullet hell, which is explain themselves.

Andro dunos 2 breaks one of the important shmup rules about bosses i don't know if it's a bug but it really pissed me off. When you are fighting a boss and they have multiple breakable parts and you destroy them the bullets from that part are meant to stop. Not in andro dunos 2 they keep shooting even though you detroyed the part i mean whats the fucking point?
That seems to be the case. Maybe you get better score when destroying the breakable parts?

While I agree sympathize with your general sentiment, the bolded part has never been a rule.

Tried the Steam Next demo for this. The upgrade and weapon system is totally bonkers with what looks like 70+ weapons, (the work of a madman) and the devs are way too proud of their waifus. Underneath is an oldskool shooter reminding me of late 80's shmups like Truxton.
Plays great, but weapon selection screen kills the pace.

I tried out ExoArmor on the App Store and had been getting my static-screen fix until life took back over lol. Levels ramp up pretty quick but that feeling of accomplishment when I beat one is what I was looking for.

Edit: here's the link https://apps.apple.com/us/app/exoarmor/id1486497323 and it looks like there's an update too, so I'm gonna have to eke out some time and check that out.

Shmups get no love outside of gaming communities and forums like these, at least in my experience. But when they do, the fanbase is usually pretty passionate and helpful. I only play ones with very easy difficulty lol. I'm playing through a modern sorta shmup called Astebreed.

I've heard a lot of good things about Pocky & Rocky Reshrined. It's not a shmup but a run & gun game. For the purpose of this thread I think it is still close enough to mention.

Super Hydorah is an upgraded version of the Hydorah game free for download on the developer's page:

It seems to reference games such as Gradius and Thunder Force.

Dodonpachi Resurrection and Espgaluda 2 are being delisted from the Nintendo eshop on December 2nd. Grab them while you can if you haven't. Steam releases are unaffected like Mushihimesama for now.

*You can't play

The big problem with shmups are they often don't have an easy/normal mode. People often give up without even being able to learn the game and quit genre all together.

Is there anything on steam for something resembling rtype final 2, in terms of genre and budget?

Interested in classic shmup gameplay, not bullet hells.

Speaking of this, I just played through Super R-Type on NSO. It actually has easy mode as default, and a novice mode. Still unbelievably difficult - one hit and you’re dead and need to restart the level. Perfect candidate for savestates.

Modern shmups have come a long way.

Cygni all guns blazing reminded me how much I enjoy a quick blast of a shoot em up. Are there any other modern looking ones available. I picked up Ikaruga on steam sale, but Cygni is still a few steps above that visually. There is a wealth of amazing arcade shmups in the none bullet hell style I prefer, but I want some modern ones - preferably with Tate mode.

Shmup Slam 7 Announcement Trailer! May 17th and 18th.

Shmup Slam has returned! To those new to the event, Shmup Slam is a GDQ-ish type of event that I do that hosts a non-stop wave of live shmup runs where players set their own scoring or survival goals and try to pull them off live on stream. What's really fun about shmups, unlike most speedrunning, is that if the player messes up, the consequence is destruction and a game over, vs just losing some time or a PB. So the stakes are extremely high which makes watching and playing the genre in this setting very exciting.

This year Slam 7 is going to be hosted at Akihabara Arcade in Westminster, Colorado, which will be extremely cool because if you are a fan of the genre but don't feel like your wanting to play a live demonstration on stream, coming to the event to hang out and watch and play all the awesome arcade cabs at the venue is still going to be a great time :)

While i have been playing newer switch shmup stuff i decided to go back to my ps1 this weekend and revisit some of my older games. Geppy X is still an incredible shmup spectacle while not the hardest or most flashy bullet hell simulator it has unreal amounts of charm the fact the entire thing plays like a lost 70's anime show complete with fully sung openings & endings plus the commercial breaks between levels makes it unlike anything else on any system.

the soundtrack is god tier

Really wish it would get remastered for a newer system as it's pretty obscure and extremely expensive now.

Also forgot Under Defeat HD is out in Japan now for Switch and PlayStation. I think the Western release got delayed. Haven't got it yet but early reports on other forums say the port is solid on both platforms.

Gotta try R-Type then. All I heard was how hard the game is.

Haven’t played Cygni (yet) but as far as modern looking shmups goes, I’d say check out the recent ports of Raiden III & IV (Raiden x mikado). They are from the early 2000s with 3D graphics, great games. Same goes for Dariusburst CS.

Sine Mora is a more recent one. I don’t really like it but ymmv

Stadust Galaxy Warriors is a pretty good indie shmup, worth checking out

Those are the first that comes to mind with a modern look.

Just saw that Crimson Clover - World EXplosion is on sale on the Japanese and European Switch eshop (and Steam?) I think it's been a while? A straight up CAVE-like banger from Japan anyway.

After playing Radiant Silvergun for the first time, I agree that shumps were an genre that I've been neglecting.

I need to play more. Was thinking of DoDonPachi as my next shump experience.

Been too long since I sat down with a Shoot 'Em Up. Got a 1CC in GanaBlade on Friday. Very fun, easy to pick up and play.

I think I want to relearn and improve in Crimzon Clover: World EXplosion or Rolling Gunner next. I also owe DoDonPachi a real playthrough at some point.

Disappointed (but honestly not surprised) that Under Defeat was delayed outside of Japan. I was emulating the Dreamcast version in anticipation of that release and having fun relearning the game. Guess I'll stick with that for the moment...
