Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Awe, I wish there was more Saturn love on the first page. Saturn was known for the abundance of high quality Shmups. My favsie was Layer Section. The soundtrack was excellent and the visual story compelling. It also had an arcade mode where you could turn your TV on its side to get a more authentic arcade feel!

This is impossible since it literally expires this month.

Is Shooting Love the best thing left to get? I see pretty mixed reviews on it.

Do any besides Strania have DLC I should be looking at?

Shooting Love is one of the best releases on the platform imo, I own the JPN retail and I love it. $20 is an amazing deal. You should consider that and Under Defeat HD which is also fantastic.

Have there been any new SHUMPS on XBLA over the past year or two? I'm trying to figure out how to burn my last $30.

Thinking:
Raystorm HD
Strania
Omega 5?

I loved Omega 5. Really interesting chain system, like DoDonPach - requires you to keep enemies alive to get through the quiet sections of the levels keeping your combo active. Beautiful graphics in the later levels also.

Darius is awesome. One of my favorite series. Played a little bit of Metal Black yesterday and instantly remembered why it was one of my favorite STGs.

What controller do you like best to play your shmups?

Depends on what system I'm playing but ideally I'd like to use an Arcade stick of some kind. Saturn pads are always good too. I used to have one of those USB Saturn pads but I think it broke. So I use the MadCatz PS3 Fight pads in its place.

I don't have a 360 stick, so I'm a pad player. I hate the 360's D-pad tho.

I recently upgraded my arcade stick to a Seimitsu LS-56 and highly recommend it for shmups. I was using a LS-32 before and will never go back again.

Also a bit ot, but did any Irem games besides R-type get home ports?

Tons:

X-Multiply SS and PSX
Ninja Spirit PCE
Legend of Hero Tonma PCE
Undercover Cops SFC
Mr. Heli PCE
Image Fight PCE, SS and PSX
Image Fight II PCE
Vigilante PCE
R-Type II PCE and PSX
In the Hunt SS and PSX
Gunforce SFC

anyone watch any of the stunfest shmup runs? jaimers almost unlocked the true last boss on his dangun feveron 1CC, errpo 1CCed dodonpachi daifukkatsu B strong. the energy was hilarious.

haven't been able to watch the akai katana, eschatos, batrider, or dragon blaze yet.

---

also, just nabbed a 3DS and have been playing summer carnival '92 recca, and I'm planning on getting steel empire and fantasy zone. Are there any other worthwhile shmups I should look into?

Anybody know if the Psikyo compilations on ps2 are good? Also a bit ot, but did any Irem games besides R-type get home ports?

The Psikyo Shooting Collection volumes put out by Taito seem like good ports. I only have the Strikers one, but if they're all as solid as that one, they're worth picking up. I also have the Gunbird collection put out by Atlus, and that one feels less polished. They feel like bad ports of ports with extra loading times and jank. I wouldn't recommend that one over the Saturn/DC ports of Gunbird 1 & 2.

I forgot how awesome Darius Gaiden is. If it wasn't for the fact I've spent alot of money on my collection I would try my hardest to grab a few shmups I used to have. *sigh*

Also, R-Type III!

Never got ported, did it?

Sadly R-Type Leo was actually really disappointing but man did my jaw drop when I saw those screenshots.

It didn't get ported and it wasn't disappointing.

It was disappointing gameplay wise in that it did not feel like an R-Type game. Faster action, less memorization, but it sure looked amazing. I'd be proud to own the PCB or at least a home version.

Edit: I take what I said back. It's really not disappointing. I played the first couple levels over in MAME. I'd forgotten that R-Type Leo feels more like a ThunderForce game with some R-Type elements. It also has 2-play co-op.

Agreed, that it did not feel like R-Type I. That doesn't take away from the fact that it's a quality shmup.

Leo was an unrelated game that was rebranded as an R-Type game late in development. Name aside, it's the weakest Irem hori that springs to mind, at least when it comes to their post-R-Type output.

Atsushi Inaba worked on that game, incidentally.

For what it's worth, R-Type Leo is part of the Irem Arcade Hits collection by DotEmu. It's a pretty lackluster emulator with no joystick support and crap graphics options though.

I don't really care for any of Irem's verts, not even Image Fight.
Image Fight is supposed to be a real influential game. Folks like Tomonobu Itagaki and Hiroshi Iuchi claim in interviews that it had a great effect on their approaches to game design.

Image Fight is so fuckin hard I don't find it that fun tho, lol.

Continuing with my scan-happy madness, Capcom had some nice print ads in 1989-1990.

The one I remember the best was this one for 1943: The Battle of Midway.
