Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Leaderboards are all about comparing how players compare to each other using the same tools. As long as the leaderboards are split out by ship (as they usually are), I don't see the problem with one ship being more powerful than another.

Yup. Expected, and preferred even. As soon as you have different ships, optimal scoring strategies change and the overall ceiling changes. I wouldn't want all ships to be exactly the same strength anyway.

So I decided to fire up Crimzon Clover again, since it'd been months since I last played it. I started up Novice Boost just to mess around, and quickly realized that I'd left Joy2Key on, which was screwing with my d-pad controls. So I figured what the hell, I'd just play with analog (which I'm usually horrible with in shmups) until I lost a life or whatever.

I 1CC'd it again. And broke my old high score from my first 1CC.

:lol

I sort of do. I don't play for score so I'm not foaming at the mouth about it, but if I see someone using an overpowered special ship I think less of the results. For example I don't particularly care for the super play of Raiden Fighters that uses the Judge Spear from Viper Phase. It's not DLC, but it's a secret unlockable (in the arcade board), and completely broken. I'm not impressed that you got 100mil or whatever by bending the rules.
So I take it you're against characters like miyamoto or gain in battle garegga? Or uo poko in dangun feveron (meows aside)?
Even if some are overpowered, I love how the games make alter your playstyle to complete the same game in a different way.

If we're talking "super play," which I assume to be the-best-player-in-the-world-beating-your-shit, than yes, I don't like it. Use "Ryu" or GTFO. I want to see someone set the Raiden Fighters world record using that Flying Pancake ship or whatever it's called.

Now, I have nothing against someone trying to show off though. If you can double that score with the Seibu mascot dragon, go for it. I just don't consider the special ship achievements "honorable." It may be fun, but it ain't fair.

I get your point... but the ship is honestly available to anyone who wants to use it for competing at the high level to set wr scores or "super play" records. It's basically proving that they can push the game to the furthest extent (of the jam :P).

there's also a reason why the official gamest arcadia world records (until they stopped tracking as of last year) would split most world records by ship and not by game. If it isn't listed, than it's more-than-likely against the scoring rules.

I grabbed Summer Carnival '92 RECCA for 3DS virtual console the other night, it's super awesome. I appreciate that it's intense right from the get go, rather than having a slow incline. Makes it more suitable for quick playthroughs/replays, especially when I'm on break at work. Obviously tough as nails but hey, I've gotten to stage 2 a few times. Surely it's all smooth sailing from here! Haha

Play-Asia is trolling me so hard with Ketsui PS3. :lol Most games only go on the "daily sale alert" once. Ketsui has been on it three times now, once in April, twice in May, and now in June, each time a little bit cheaper than the last.

At this point I'm convinced that it's gonna go on Weekly Special like Caladrius Blaze did sooner rather than later. I think I'll just hold out for that. Weekly Special stuff generally gets huge discounts compared to their normal sales.

Wasn't someone selling a bunch of copies of Ketsui PS3 new for ~$41 on ebay? I remember seeing someone mention that in the Cave thread. Might be a better deal than P-A's trickle sales.

Yeah, those are gone now. Cheapest on eBay is $45.87 used, I think. And I don't really like buying used without a guarantee that the case/manual are included and in good condition. If P-A puts it on Weekly Special, it'll likely be ~$30 or so, and the fact that they keep doing trickle sales on it makes me think they have a bunch of stock they want to get rid of. Eventually it'll go on Weekly Special like Caladrius Blaze did, I'm sure
maybe
.

As long as ships stay separate on leader boards then I'm cool with different/overpowered ships. Just another way to score and enjoy the game.

I love how yagawa starts off so strong with his now typical "do the impossible" mantra. Honestly, I haven't sunk enough time into it to get past stage 2 either, but it is amazing (just not $1,500 amazing for the original). I found that safe spot for the S1 boss that finally allowed me to get to stage 2 after a good 30 minutes or so of runs lol.

speaking of fast games, I've been playing my mushihimesama futari black label another ver board a lot lately and trying to crank original mode up to a 100k multiplier (the bullets are so fast it's insane), but decided to switch it out the other night for dangun feveron... I think feveron has to be the most infuriating shmup I've ever played in my life. furthest I got was stage 4 at last years chicago shmupsmeet and I can't even get past the 2nd stage now. it makes me respect that stunfest 2015 run by jaimers 10 fold more.

That would be me, btw my copy arrived the other day... It took more than a month and I was afraid it had gone missing! Still haven't played it, can't wait to hook up the triple after months just to give it a serious goin-between Splatoon sessions this weekend :)

TIL Darius Gaiden came out on PS1 as well.

I had the Japanese PS1 version (cover is in my post as well) but it doesn't seem to have been released on PS1 in NA or EU. Saturn version was superior, naturally.

I know Darius Gaiden was included in Taito Legends 2 for PS2, Xbox and Windows.

I'm kinda surprised flyers.arcade-museum did not have anything for Salamander 2 but I managed to find some from two different places.

Salamander 2 / Life Force 2 was released on PS1 and Saturn on the Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus and also Salamander Portable on PSP.

And I didn't realize there was a Salamander anime from 1988, which I'll have to watch it this weekend.

Purchased Crimzon Clover: World Ignition on Steam. How did one guy out CAVE Cave?

How much money do I need to give to Clover-TAC to get a release on PSN?
I I already hooked up my laptop to my TV via HDMI out and it was eyeball melting

Buy the DLC and pray for a prompt follow up.

I did my part and purchased all that was available except the cabinet inserts.

Crimzon Clover is seriously excellent but I wouldn't go quite that far.

Yeah, hyperbole opinion... I was very impressed though.

Since I've been in kind of a STG mood for the past few days, I ordered a copy of Caladrius Blaze. I never played it when the original came out on the 360, so I'm excited to finally try it out. I gave MOSS a second chance a little while back with Raiden IV Overkill as I was not a fan of Raiden III. I really enjoyed it, not as much as Fighers Aces but that series is god tier. MOSS is alright in my book now.

MOSS, and Triangle Service are ok in my book. Although, the true saviours of the shmup, Qute, have been awfully silent lately. I hope Natsuki Chronicle doesn't become vaporware. :(

So what's the word on XII Zeal's Steam port-quality?

I read a review* on the store-page that said it was a bad port with input lag and other issues.
Kinda wondering if that's even remotely true.

*said review is no longer on the page, probably for good reason.

EDIT: Checked the shmups forum, nobody has made any complaints.
Guess this'll be my next purchase then.

Where'd you order Caladrius Blaze from and how much? I want it badly.

I don't know. I think I've uttered that exact same sentence myself when contemplating Crimzon Clover in the past. It is certainly one of the most important Japanese video games to come out in the last five years. It keeps the arcade, doujin, and hard core flags flying high at a time when everyone is checking out to do causal, mobile, social.
