Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

So, how is this news not posted yet?!?]

I posted it in some other thread (there are too many STG threads, I swear to god...), might as well repost here:

This is a separate announcement/campaign but it may be related to their 2nd Steam release so I'm posting it here:

CAVE is currently running a retweet campaign for a new game; if they get 4,000 retweets before the 9th they'll reveal the full game at their teaser website:

http://promo.cave.co.jp/bancho/

(retweet this: https://twitter.com/cavegames/status/673759029005434881 )

They've already received almost 2k retweets and have revealed a few things: it's a STG, it's called Ichiban Bancho (a term for people who get really good at the beginning of a game but suck at the rest, roughly translates as "1st-Stage Badass") and they're already planning for worldwide distribution. They're using the word "app" so it's probably another iOS game.

If you look at what's already revealed on the website, you may notice a few similarities to the box art of a certain X360 port...

SDOJ port would be sick. I find that game much harder than DOJBLEX, so it would make sense to tease a "game where you can only beat the first level" and release SDOJ.

So, how is this news not posted yet?!?

That is freaking hilarious and perfectly describes me when it comes to shmups.

For those not paying attention:
The campaign was to reveal details before 18:00 on December 9; they didn't get 4k retweets but they did the full reveal anyway:

Dodonpachi Ichimen Bancho is a "completely free" iOS game that'll launch on December 14 JP time; more details to be revealed closer to launch.

They also announced they'll be bringing their soundtracks to various digital storefronts (iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, other JP outlets) starting from December 11, and it sounds like the first three releases will be Dodonpachi Daioujou, Mushihimesama and Deathsmiles.
Interesting. I've actually had a lot of fun with Sky Force on iOS as F2P, so hopefully they can pull it off with a DDP F2P game.

I still love that sub-title though.

Probably wishful thinking but I wish Cave would re-release their games on disc for one of the current gen systems. I don't think it's feasible or affordable to get the Cave Box now (plus I really don't like games with loli themes like Deathsmiles).

Anyways, Darius Burst Chronicles looks awesome, might force me to finally bite on a PS4 or a Vita.

I don't like loli-themed games either but Deathsmiles is one of Cave's best IMO. It may not have a second loop and be on the easy side but it plays soooo good.

Developer Stellar Circle released a video showing a stage 4's preview of their upcoming STG, Blue Revolver.

They also postponed the release date from December 2015 to a generic Early 2016. ;____;
If you still haven't played the demo please do it now! The game is incredibly fun and polished and the scoring system is simple yet satisfying, I'm so freaking hyped for its release it's not even funny.

Looks like Blue Revolver is coming along well! New ship type looks cool - the shield reflect mechanic is giving me a Mars Matrix vibe.

Nice to see some Raiden V footage as well. From some of the earlier art, I thought they might reinvent the series into a different genre, but it looks like it will be a classic Raiden game after all.

On that note, I'd love to see an official port of Mars Matrix make it to PC. Played the hell out of it on DC and via emulators, but I'd love to own a legit PC copy.

I think it looks quite good. Interested in the aspect ratio. Is One still region-free? I'm assuming I can get a NA system and then just import this?

That's the idea I'm going by. It worked for Puyo Puyo Tetris.

They're doing some really interesting things with this game. Characters, player data tracking, some story thing. This game is looking more and more like a shooter MMO. I like it.

Essentially, this is a forum for most major shmup developers to discuss the future of the genre, and to discuss new ideas for creating exciting shmups on the PC platform. It's a significant industry event and something we've been building to for most of this year. A lot of developers like CAVE, G.Rev, Moss, Qute, Taito, Triangle Service, and so on will either attend or sponsor the event.

The event is on 12/26 and is open to the public. There will be free play, guest speakers, and a score attack challenge, so if you happen to be in Tokyo, please drop by and play some games!

:O

Damn, this is thread-worthy IMO. Great initiative!

Retro Core has outdone themselves.
A very interesting comparison of Cotton - Fantastic Night Dreams. Particularly between the System 16 arcade and the Sharp X68000 versions. The X68000 version actually has improved graphic detail in the backgrounds.

God Cotton was such a memorable series of games. I keep expecting a Cotton bundle to be made and sold someday for PC. I really hope it happens.

So, has anyone played the Cave F2P game yet? I have no idea what I'm doing, literally everything important is in Japanese :(

Okay, I'm getting the hang of this.

Every time you play, you want to finish with as many coins as possible to buy upgrades. Coins are gotten by shooting large enemies, destroying boss parts, and destroying background objects. It gets easier as you get more powerful.

After a stage, pick one of the cards to watch an ad that will multiply your coins anywhere from 1x to 3x. Higher difficulties give more coins, obviously.

All you have to do is keep buying upgrades and the game will gradually open up. First, you unlock more upgrades (usually it's tied to buying a couple of levels of one particular thing - like upgrading shot power will unlock shot speed upgrades), and then you unlock more difficulties and more levels.

Nobody quite knows how difficulties and levels get unlocked yet - maybe you just need to be sufficiently powerful.

It feels like this game is intended to be a heavily gated introductory experience for absolute beginners to learn the genre. You are meant to be introduced to everything very, very slowly - there is no way to pay money to advance faster.

Ah, that's great to hear. From what I can tell re: unlocks, I believe they're tied to finishing percentage of the previous level. I think once I got 75% on stage 1, it unlocked stage 2. And when I got 80% (or 85%) I unlocked stage 1 normal. Or vice versa.

But I'm learning that with this game. And I realised only last night that the hosts file I use on my phone was blocking the ads at the end of each level, so I was tapping those cards but nothing was happening.

Currently I have stages 1, 2 and 1+2 on Easy unlocked, stage 1 on Normal and I can *see* (but not play) level 1 Hard.

Several patch updates for our shmups tonight:

DariusBurst Chronicle Saviours V1.00 rev 4614
  • The refresh rate has been locked to 60 fps to prevent excessive speed on monitors with refresh rates higher than 60Hz.
  • Corrected the behaviour of the "Wave" weapon in CS mode. The weapon was incorrectly piercing through boss enemies instead of colliding with them as intended.
(Only Origin and Gaiden were working correctly before)
  • Corrected an error where the burst gauge would not fill up when attacking boss enemies in CS mode.
  • Corrected the text in some scenes where it extended beyond the dialogue window.

Mushihimesama V1.1.6.1
  • Optimizations to reduce or eliminate microstuttering/frame hitching.
  • Corrected a visual error that would cause the true last boss health bar to display incorrectly in V1.5 Ultra mode.
  • Added support for fullscreen tate (vertical aspect ratios) on 3:4 and 9:16 monitors. You can adjust this using the "Aspect Ratio" setting. Support for 16:10, 5:4, 4:5, and 10:16 aspect ratios is planned for a future update.
  • Added a dead zone setting for direct input controllers (joystick adjustment).
  • Modified the Replay menu to show local replays and replays downloaded from the leaderboards in different colors.

DeltaZeal V1.03
  • You can now record replay videos longer than 30 minutes (up to 60 minutes).
  • Added a Fast Forward feature to replay playback. Use the "X" button to toggle fast forward on and off.
  • Corrected an error where the keyboard would start both P1 and P2 at the same time.
  • Optimized text display so menus and leaderboards should be more responsive.
  • Corrected an error that could occur when accessing an empty leaderboard.

Looks like another fun Shoot 'em Up from Astro Port for $5.99 on PC. Here is the link:

http://playism-games.com/game/243/witch-bot-meglilo

At the moment I can only see it on the Playism site, but maybe it will hopefully come to other storefronts. As well, if anyone is on the fence in the link above is a free Demo version where you can play up to level 2 & get a special trial version ending.

Looks like they're sticking with the style of Suercharged Robot Vulkaiser but gone for a vert this time. I quite enjoyed Vulkaiser and will probably get this too.
