Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I picked up the Alltynex trilogy from Gamersgate (DRM-free) this week (20 bucks for 3 shmups, not a bad deal!).

Haven't touched much on Alltynex Second yet. Apparently it's a remake of the original. But it's in 3D :(((

RefleX is great, I love the shield system. Deflecting shots back, and having to let go of the shoot button to recharge it back faster (though it recharges slowly over time even if you keep shooting), there's a nice learning curve in terms of using it at the appropriate times without draining it too much.

Kamui is great too. So there's shot, and a lightning homing weapon (that attacks targets in the background in a different plane) which has an energy bar. It recharges naturally. The more energy you have, the more lightning you shoot out. Pressing both buttons gives you a straight mega-beam that cancels bullets it hits, but you can't keep it up for more than a few seconds. It actually uses the same energy gauge as the lightning, but in reverse - it brings down the max energy value that the lightning bar can recharge up to (this goes back to normal within a few seconds, though). So there's a nice balance between using your weapons optimally; the normal shot, destroying targets in the other plane via lightning, while keeping yourself alive with the beam at opportune times as well.

Music is pretty neat as well!

Damn, this price for Mushi Futari was too good to be true, of course it's sold out. :( Any suggestions on where to grab this on the cheap?

This is my shmup setup for this weekend, finally got a component cable for my slim 360 so I could play some games in tate mode. I'm still hooked on playing XIIZeal, game is so good :)
I've managed to clear arcade mode in very easy and easy so far, working up to harder difficulties.

The "?" means they haven't tested it yet. The previous individual releases were region-free, and since this is just a collection (two discs in one box), not a new disc, I'd expect them to still be region free. I'd assume remastering the discs with a region lock would be too time consuming (re-certification) and costly.

What are the good, région free shmups?

Keep in mind I already have those :

- akai katana
- deathsmiles
- deathsmiles 2
- DodonPachi resurection
- Raiden 4
- Raiden Legacy
- Under Defeat HD
- Otomwdius
- Shikigami No Shiro 3

Games can be for either the 360 or the PS3. I also already own the following xbla games :

- RSG
- Ikaruga
- Guwange
- TriggerHeart

Espgaluda II (standard edition) and Mushihimesama Futari are both region-free.

Oh, good to know! Thanks.

Throw away Raiden Legacy, get Raiden Fighters Aces instead (unless you live in EU :( )

the following CAVE games are region free:
-Muchi Muchi Pork!/Pink Sweets
-Espgaluda II
-Dodonpachi Saidaioujou
-Mushihimesama Futari

Here are some other games that are region free:
-Shooting Love 10th Anniversary (DeltaZeal and XIIZeal)
-Bullet Soul
-Ginga Force
-Eschatos

This game is $1 on XBLA and it's pretty fun! Horrendous artwork tho:
-Chronoblast

I pretty good XBLA title you're missing is Strania

Wait, is Shikigami no Shiro 3 region-free?

I meant Raiden Fighters Ace actually (even if I do have the androïd compilation too.

Will those titles cost an arm and a leg (more than 50$ or so each)?

And SnS 3 is the Wii version, don't know anything about the 360 version :/

The only games I listed that cost more than $50 are Saidaioujou and Shooting Love. They were released about a month ago.

Yeah, as much as I like Thunder Force V...thanks to the free range, its not as hard as it should be. Honestly I try to force myself not to use it.

Killer art design (doesnt always shine through, old school polygonal graphics and whatnot, but even that has a certain charm).

Also i'm a sucker for mid fight boss transformations/overdone intros. For whom is the sword drawn.

It was released by Working Designs back on the PSX. The PSN version is only available on the Japanese store.

That's what I thought.

I was under the impression that the rights to Thunder Force had been acquired by some ex-TS dude and weren't with TS anymore, which is why I asked to begin with.

Speaking of the Japanese PSN store, I see that Xevious 3DG+ was just released on it. :)

I can never pass up a Xevious game as it was the first vertical scrolling shooter I fell in love with back in the day.

Man - those are awesome. I would love to see all of T5 is pixels rather than polys. The visuals in 5 ruined it - ending a streak of an incredible looking series.

At least it plays ok.

I'm thinking of picking up that dlc for futari on the 360. I've been holding out for a sale but I'm sick of waiting. Anyone here like this black label dlc? I hear it's pretty decent?

All modes are an overall improvement to 1.5 in my opinion. Most of the tweaks to the scoring has made the modes more fun to play, though a few changes added some annoyance (more point-blanking in Original). The DLC did go on sale a while ago, but if/when that will happen again is unknown. If you do buy it and you also like to keep your disc-based 360 games installed, it is recommended you keep this DLC and the installed game on separate devices, otherwise it can cause visual/performance issues.

I have a 4gig with a harddrive also in my 360. Could I install the game on the harddrive and the dlc on the onboard 4gigs?

Don't know too much about these aside from GundeadiGne, but I did see Amazon is offering this bundle of shooters:

1. Acceleration of SUGURI-X Edition [Download]
2. cloudphobia [Download]
3. Flying Red Barrel [Download]
4. GundeadliGne [Download]
5. QLIONE [Download]

cloudphobia is cool. It's a tad similar to Kingdom Grandprix. You fly and shoot guys, but you also have a speed-up button, and a strict time limit to get through a level. You have to balance precision shooting with break neck racing.

I am really enjoying the trio as well. Plus getting Satazius as a bonus was nice, too. RefleX is a nice change of pace.

How good are the Thunder Force ports on the Thunder Force Gold Packs for Saturn? Should I just seek the genesis carts instead?

There perfect as far as I can tell. I would go for the Gold Packs - simply because you get the arcade version of TF3 as a bonus.

Also, the Saturn has more arcade stick to choose from if that's how you play.

Thanks. How is the music? Sonic Jam for example is a highly lauded Genesis compilation for Saturn, but the music lags behind and restarts after invincibility or 1up jingles end instead of continuing where they left off. Any weirdness like that?

I've only got the first Gold Pack.

It looks and sounds amazing. But the audio is streamed from the CD like a Sega CD or PC-engine CD game. Like they recorded the audio of the MD game and play it back rather than being created by a chip.
