Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Raiden IV and Caladrius are both coming to PS3. Raiden IV will be PSN only.

Which means both are finally getting region-free releases. :)
Now port Raiden Fighters Aces, too, please.

Holy fuck, yes! I can't believe my luck, I had a copy of Raiden IV on my hands the other day but decided not to get it because EB Games was selling the game without the box, ost, and manual still for 20+ bucks. Even though I always prefer physical media, I will get it for the PS3 just to show support on the platform. Also, I've heard good things about Caladrius but I don't have a JP 360. Here's me hoping there will be a PS+ discount of some sort.

Here's hoping Caldrius is reasonably priced and/or the 360 version drops in price. I'll probably pick up Raiden IV again too.

Caladrius is gonna be one of those 6800 yen jobs...I can feel it.

Now Raiden might be $20 but I'm thinking it might be closer to $40. Plus, don't forget that it will be J-store locked so most folks are gonna have to get points cards to purchase. Would have been nicer with a retail release but we can't win all battles...silver lining: since it is PSN it is more likely to get localised.

I managed to grab the PCB for relatively cheap about 4 years ago. It looks like it's sky-rocketed since then.

One of the best shooters ever made. Ever.

it truly is. and that's because people didn't realize (including myself), how awesome raizing games were. prices on all the yagawa battle trilogy flew.

It still makes me cry that my original PCB collection I sold as a cheap bulk deal to someone, about 2 years before the prices all started to quadruple or more. I still have a few of my original set left. Bakraid and Hyper Duel for $85 each, those cost about $350 and $650 now.

Crazy times. Old days were better, it was the land of plenty. Too many new collectors who are too desperate to buy.

Never tried out Caldrius so I might have to pick that up. I need a change as SDOJ is kicking my ass.

Nice to see some fellow shmups forum faces around here.

Gradius PC-Engine came out today on J-3DS today (presented nicely) as well.

Still quite a few annnounced shooter titles for Q1 and Q2 (might be missing something):

Karous 3DS
Radiligy 3DS
Wing Hero snd Zoliates (Game Center CX3) 3DS
Bullet Soul Sequel 360
Raiden IV Overdrive PS3
Caladrius PS3
Don Paccin MIA iOS

Did you buy it? What screen options does it have?

Of course I bought it! A little under $6.

Three screen options...a sharp 4:3. Another 4:3 which is a little wider and softer. Not really sure the difference on these. But the first is razor-sharp so I'm going with it. And a full-screen stretched blury-mess mode (do folks actually use these, ever, ugh).

Standard other things like button-mapping (turbo for one option), save state. I posted a pic in the PCE thread last night. A little modeled classic PC-Engine for the menu. I had never gotten Gradius PCE on Wii Virtual Console so it was a no-brainer to check it out.

Also worth mentioning is that these are different than the PSP ports in that they don't have that obnoxious scrolling wallpaper.

Ikaruga Steam

I'd say Revolver deserves a spot as well though I'm not sure if it's going to be easily available. Hope it makes it to XBLA or Steam at some point.

There's also one more for 2014...
but I can't say nothin'. ;)

Excite!

Oh yeah, on Ikaruga. I don't have a PC so forget about those. Maybe my 2014 resolution will be to get a smallish PC to play/support things like Ikaruga and to play Crimzon Clover finally.

Wha??? When did they start releasing PC-Engine games on the 3DS? Is Gradius the first?

What's special about the PC Engine version?

The regular DS has the Konami Arcade Classics collection which includes arcade ports of Gradius and Contra as its headliners (plus some other fun but definitely simpler games).

Am I the only one annoyed by the Gradius I boss theme? I mean I dont know how everything else in the game seems so catchy, yet the boss theme is so...I dunno. Annoyingly repetitive.

Honestly, it is just a different port. Sound is very PCE and I'm familiar with it (the slowdown and stuff).

My girlfriend gave me a 360 with Akai Katana and Dodonpachi Resurrection! She's the best. <3 Need to start deciding what other region-free games to get too. Mushi Futari and Espgaluda 2 are on the list already.

Any recommendations for controller adapters? I have a PS2/PS3 arcade stick I like to play with.

The one I use on my cab looks like this one (whether it's actually the same one I have no clue):

I think it's made by Blaze, there also a similar white one by eTokki or something.

I searched the thread and didn't find any results, but perhaps it failed me. Otherwise, this thread made it 68 pages with no mention of Hero Core, a shmup/metroidvania style game, with a Gameboy art style. It was made by Daniel Remar, the same guy what made Iji, and is a sequel to his game Hero, which I have yet to play. Oh, and it's fucking FREE. You have no excuse, GAF:

Anybody know the deal with Astebreed? I don't even know what platform it's for. I'm really looking forwar to this and the Revolver 360 update.

Here is another region free thats a pretty nice value.

Thanks! Any opinions on the Blaze or eTokki ones? Either better or lower lag, or are they basically equivalent?
I heard the eTokki ones were the adapter of choice for the fighting game crowd for a little while at least (presumably most have moved to customs sticks w/reprogrammable boards now though), and supposedly the black Blaze one is basically the same or a successor or something. The black one is easier to find and tends to be cheaper I think, albeit usually shipping from China/HK so it might take a while. White ones might be found locally (US at least) but seems like they usually go more in the $25-30 range instead of $15-20 for the other.

Looking at pictures of both it looks like the main changes are a bigger/easier to press guide button (little button on side of white one, bigger green button on top of the black one) and the wheel/gamepad switch was moved. Functionally they sound the same so I'd get the black one for that little refinement and cheaper price.

if you're just getting accustomed to CAVE shooters, I probably wouldn't recommend it..
but the muchi muchi pork/pink sweets bundle is far beyond the best value for a shmup purchase.

VERY Cool! Its nice to see the PS3 finally get some shmup attention. Will definatley pick these up.

On a related, but tangential note: Play Asia now sells PSN, Xbox, and iTunes digital cards for different regions, including Japan. Their mark up is not as bad as I've seen other places. Probably not the cheapest but, confirmed, reliable. I'll use them when I do a refill next.

I'm thinking of opening a kick-ass Arcade/Retro/not-so-retro *bar* (good street-ish food and lots of beers to choose from) in the near future (have yet to decide the location/city), any cool examples I should look at to get some ideas?

Examples of what, exactly? Games? Locations? Wallpaper?

Just a little PSA: limited coupon code for Espgaluda 2 Platinum from Solaris. I'd asked them why their pricing on Espgaluda 2 was higher than their other Cave Platinum releases, and they told me that a) their distributor charges them Y800 more for that game for some reason, and b) gave me a coupon code for Y600 off that game! They say the coupon is good for 5 uses and I've already used it - no idea if it's expired yet. Spoilered the code (and crossposting in the Cave thread).

esp2coupon

Solaris's service has been awesome every time I've ordered from them.

Wow, is the triangle service stuff usually region free? I hate their shooting games but I wanted to try that Pengo for a long time.

Hey shmup GAF!

I need some advice. I'm in Japan at the moment, heading home tomorrow. The bic camera across the road has a decent selection of region free shmups, but I need help deciding on the best couple of games.

- Dodonpachi Saidaioujou
- Ginga Force
- XII Zeal/delta zeal
- Eschatos
- Espgaluda 2

I don't have any experience with bullet he'll shooters, but I've always been intrigued. I was raised on Raiden, R-Type, Darius etc and don't mind a challenge. What would you guys recommend?

First one is region-locked (but came out when everything was), second one is region-free. I'm guessing it will be region-free.

Dodonpachi Saidaioujou is very great (region free too). There should be a Ginga Force/Eschatos bundle package for around 6000Y and I hear that Ginga Force is especially great, though I have yet to play it.

No Ginga/Eschatos double at this store, but they are both going for under 3000Y each anyway so no dramas there!

Dodon is the most expensive of the batch, at 6300Y. I was kind of thinking about espgaluda instead since it's a platinum release and cheaper, but if dodonpachi is a better game maybe I should splash out?

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

DoDonPachi SDOJ is an awesome title. The game is tough as hell though and might be a bit intimidating for a beginner. There is a beginner mode but even that can be a bit hard. The game looks awesome and is a pure bullet-hell experience. I love it.

Espgaluda II is great as well and has more beginner-friendly modes. The core game has a really convoluted scoring mechanic and it takes a lot of work to master that.

Eschatos is a great pack with lots of modes. The gameplay is fun, graphics are pretty retro and the soundtrack is god-tier. It has also bonus Wonderswan games so it really is an awesome package for the price.
