Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I kinda wish the Treasure games got a disc release as well like some XBLA games got (think the Qubed compilation with Rez, Lumines Live, et al).

Treasure's XBLA library being a publisher mess is probably the main reason why it never happened.

Ikaruga - Treasure
Guardian Heroes - Sega
Bangaioh Missile Fury - D3
Radiant Silvergun - Microsoft

I re-bought an Xbox 360 recently because I never got a chance to play/buy Treasure's great ports/updates back when they were first released. Playing Radiant Silvergun for the first time and it's glorious. The thing is, I fucking suck nuts at arcade shooters. Maybe my age is showing, but I can't play these games for shit anymore. I'm inching my way through Story Mode (which I'm assuming is easier with the level-ups and such), but I don't even think I've technically made it to the third set of stages. =/

I'd like to think I was pretty decent at games like this growing up (first shooter was Sky Shark on NES followed by Sagaia on Genesis). I don't remember struggling so much when I was younger, ha! Man, I think my gaming skills peaked back during the PS2-era. I just can't handle intense gaming anymore lol!
RS might be a bad one to start with since it can be kinda dense, you might want to try something with simpler or more traditional mechanics and overall structure...pretty much anything else I guess? There's so many on 360 and there's a bunch of them I haven't played, so I'm not sure what to suggest.

Anybody can help?

I can't, for the life of me, figure out out to tate the controls to mach with the screen on Twin Tiger Shark (XBLIG). Has the option and I'm going 90 degrees screen and controls and it is still stuck in standard controls for normal TV?

But Radiant Silvergun is so majestic! I just want to keep playing this one, lol!

I think part of my problem is that I tend to jump from game to game these days. If I were to focus solely on RS, I'm sure I'd get better. I just don't have the willpower to buckle down on one game nowadays though. I especially don't look forward to shit like this after a long day at work, ha! I just think I have to accept the fact that I like shooters, but I'll probably never finish most of the ones I own, lol!

Perhaps you´ve figured it out by now, but aren´t you supposed to only rotate the monitor and not the controls? At least that´s the way it is on most other STGs.

Hello Gaffers! :-)

I'm making a shmup paying hommage to PCEngine and 8/16 bit games and I'd like to receive a bit of feedback (PC/Win).

There's a pre-alpha 2 minutes test zone I'd like to share with you: increasing difficulty, semi-random patterns, a bit of enemies (solo and wave patterns), upgradable player weapon.

Please PM me if you'd like to try it and to leave me a bit of feedback!

If you like games like Gunhed or Tatsujin/Truxton you could be interested ^___^

I actually did figure it out a few days ago. It is just a glitchy game. I just kept selecting it and finally it worked.

Good game, btw! Really like the vertical length.

Amazon appears to have the LE of Bullet Soul Infinite Burst for $80. Other than that, some okay deals there. Heard Deathsmiles 2 was bad though it's the only one with a price I'm really interested in

Hm maybe I'll nab it then. I've been meaning to work through this pile of shmups I just bought though. ketsui, Deathsmiles, under defeat HD, Otomodeus (lol), mushi mushi pork/pink sweets, and a copy of Gradius 5 I can't even play except on emulator unless I fix this fat YOLD PS3. Was hoping to 1CC or ragequit each before I start buying too much more

Some people in here have heard of or tried Suwako-chan Cubed (Suwapyon 2), right? It's a Touhou-themed PC doujin STG that not only uses a 3D perspective, but gives the player the ability to jump, has varying-height terrain, and fills the playable volume with bullets in three dimensions rather than two. It's a wild game, with a rotatable camera to allow you to better-parse the bullet patterns, but even with that it's unfortunately pretty hard to visually parse understand everything.

But today I played the Oculus Rift DK2 edition of the game. Holy shit. Cross-post from elsewhere:

This game is insane. It's a Touhou-themed sugoi-ass STG, but the twist is that it's played in a 3D volume rather than on a 2D plane, and your character can jump over things and make use of 3D terrain while dodging bullets that can be come from all those extra directions. I've tried this in 2D. It's a cool proof-of-concept in 2D, but I often had trouble making sense of what was going on, and the camera rotation controls were pretty clunky and not really enough to get an immediate sense of the playfield. But now, with the Rift? It's utterly nuts how effortlessly the headset turned the unreadable 2D version of this game into something crystal clear and immediately understandable. Maybe too much so, lol, which might explain why it's so easy on Normal (that and you get a shitload of extends). It works so well. One of the nicest things about playing danmaku games in tate with a big screen right in your face is that you can have such a close view of your character as you navigate through tight spots, yet in this the view is already so engulfing, and if you feel you need a closer view, you can just naturally lean in. Lunatic is great fun so far. I'd love to see more games like this, preferably with cooler themes.

I'm also working on a Rift-based STG-esque (kinda-sorta) game myself, so this is extra motivating.

This is horribly exciting to me right now.

1cc takes a long time, I say play with credits and the better you get the fewer you'll need

Man Under Defeat is not at all what I was expecting. Interesting though. My 360 came with a sealed LE and it was worth so much more than the PS3 version I just bought a US PS3 deluxe edition and left the 360 sealed. Moving the ship to change targeting angle takes getting used to.

How does play asia's free shipping work btw? I noticed an option for free bubble envelope shipping before, but if I get just Deathsmiles 2 it ways $5 shipping on a $18~ item. Is there a minimum? Might grab eshatos too if so.

Oh I always credit feed on a first playthrough if possible (Ketsui doesn't let you), I just consider 1CC a good way consider a game "done". Just beating the last boss credit feeding isn't satisfying, more of a scouting mission so I know what I'm going to be doing.

Minimum for free shipping is $25, should say so on the product page if a game is under $25.

Not much of a value. Why did they price the double pack so highly?

Probably because of the included OST. If that's the case then get them separately. But I recommend both. Eschatos is a more purist shmup, while Ginga Force's RPG mechanics are fun as heck.

Holy crap at that Deathsmiles IIX price! Last time I checked that game was still $80 years after release. That's even cheaper than the XBLA price. Shit, now I kind of want to grab a copy just to have a physical disc...

Can you browse the web version of marketplace with google translate, queue from there and just turn on your Xbox 360 to download them automatically?

Hadn't thought of that (this also happens to be my first 360/xbox product), I'll see how intelligible the webstore is with g translate.

Any 360 games with notable DLC? Not terribly interested in slightly different scoring modes or minorly different characters but if something's worth playing I might have to look into a JP MS Bucks card

Currently staring this down, not so sure about Ginga though, good prices?

If that's Daifukkatsu Ver. 1.5 and not the localized Resurrection, I would say it ain't bad. Although if you do have a US Xbox, you can grab Resurrection for so much cheap on Amazon AFAIK.

It has about all the standard art assets for each PS2-era and later game (except Saidaioujou, which came out later) that you would expect. Box art, character art, stage end art, ending art, body pillow art...

Maybe you wouldn't expect that last one.

It's about 1/3 Deathsmiles games, which just serves as a reminder that some of the other games don't have nearly as much art. Also, art is reproduced at a smaller size than for the standalone artbooks. I feel that the Akai Katana section especially suffers due to this.

Don't expect the rarer artwork they commissioned for some games, like the phone card-exclusive stuff.

There's not way this will be region-free is it? :(

Also, super shameless but I'm selling a bunch of shmups including a SDOJ LE. Drop by the BST thread if you can!

Looks like a new shooter collection approaches the X360
...maybe
:

Sakura Flamingo Archives includes Chaos Field, Radirgy, Karous, Illvelo, and Radirgy Noa. These five games will have new modes and a score ranking option.

Good, glad to finally have all of them together
it'll be easier to pretend that shit doesn't exist

In other news, current Humble Bundle has Gigantic Army as the pwyw tier (normally $6 on Steam), it's that heavily inspired/tribute of Assault Suit Valken/Cybernator, dunno if it's any good but it looks the part from trailers and whatnot

Yay managed to get onto a high score board for a shmup!

aEqs7aul.jpg

Still a long way from the top though... Stage 4 is too hard! Can't get past it.

Also, none of the demos for the G-Gee Cave ports on my Moto G Android phone work. I can download the extra files but they always crash on the title screen. Is this a problem with Android 4.4.4, and will the actual full games work if I buy them? Would be pretty nice to play some Cave stuff on the go even if it is with touch controls.

Okay two things guys:

Steel Empires just came out on the 3DS - apparently it's just the Genesis game (which I never played), but they want $30 for it. I don't think I ever played any of Hot-B's Genesis games, even Insector X. That price seems a bit (read: WAY) too high for a Genesis game, what is the consensus on it?

More importantly, WHY DIDN'T YOU GUYS TELL ME M.U.S.H.A. WAS ON THE VC????! Fuck, I have been trying to find a reasonably priced cartridge forever. I still want one, but this will scratch that itch. I miss that game.

I saw the bullet heaven mini review and they seemed pretty positive on it. As an owner of the Genny cart though, $30 is much too pricey for me. Unless there's a deeply discounted sale, I can't see me buying it.
