Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

These are both expanded versions of the original games with new modes. Raiden IV Overkill has a new mode with new stages, and Caladrius Blaze (not out yet until the end of this month) will have the arcade mode and another new mode with new characters.

Caladrius Blaze is basically a PS3 port with all DLC bits (and perhaps some bits from the arcade version) included unlike the original 360 release.

Ketsui? How does the scoring system work in it and Caladrius? I hear a lot on Ketsui and I have no clue how Caladrius operates.

EDIT: NM...looked up Ketsui but still can't find a breakdown of Caladrius. Ketsui is interesting...chips fall with numbers from enemies killed. The further away the lower the number. If you point blank you get higher chip value and if you use lockon shots after getting a high value chip all chips that drop during a 60 second timer will be of the same value, but you lose a percentage of total chips earned when doing this. Sounds like an intriguing balancing act.

I'ts that time of year again where presents get swapped in my house between me and my wife. This means its time to ask for shmups!

Currently I own a Samsung Tablet, 3DS,Dreamcast, Saturn, US 360 and a US PS3 and a PSP for import enjoyment so in other words...region free or digital only.

I own:

My faves are Akai Katana, Shikigami 2, and a tossup between the Muchi Pork Bundle and Deathsmiles 2x.

Suggest ANYTHING and everything. Imports most welcome. I tend to get hooked on bullet cancel mechanics or crazy stories. I tend to ditch anything Gradius-like.

Currently Considering

Bullet Soul Infinite Burst
Espgaluda 2
Mushihimesama Futari
Dodonpachi Sai Dai Ou Jooooo or however you spell the game with Incessant Moe Blob mode
Cave titles for Tablet if they wont crash (Espgaluda 2 crashes on stage 2 on the Samsung galaxy note ;_;)
Anything for PS3
Anything like Senko no Ronde (god I need the sequel someday)
Plus I'm open to suggestions. I loved shit like Trouble Witches and Bangai O so lemme know why you think I should go for anything in particular here.

If you like the bullet grazing of Shikigami no Shiro, you should check out the Psyvariar series. Psyvariar 1 is easily available on PS3 as a Game Archive PS2 game, and Psyvariar 2 can be gotten on PS2 or Dreamcast. There is also a Xbox port, but we don't talk about that one.

What's wrong with the Xbox port? I thought all releases were pretty similar, but maybe I'm just thinking of SnS2.

The Xbox port is shit. long load times in places that never had them before, and slowdown where there was none. It's the definition of a poor, inaccurate port.

The Shikigami games on the other hand, have superb Xbox ports.

Mushi Futari, no contest. CAVE's greatest along with Ketsui

Mushi Futari is definitely the obvious choice in that list. It's a fantastic game, one of my two fave Cave games (with Akai Katana).

On the PS3, I'd definitely suggest Mamorukun Curse. It's not really a "flying people" shmup - it plays quite a bit like Pocky & Rocky, so there isn't much else like it these days. The mechanics are a lot of fun too; the curse field that powers up enemies but increases the score items they drop is a neat mechanic.

So, that Steel Empire game on 3DS is a bit of a boner? I thought it looked cool, but the Sine Mora comparisons will probably keep me away. Wonder how fast it will drop in price...

For those of you who own a NTSC-J X360, how much did you pay for it? I might be able to get one used for around $160 and I'm wondering if it's a good deal or not. Also, for how much does DOJBLEX sell for these days? I've been trying to find a copy.

I like the Genesis game, but that $30 pricetag for the remake is a little high. I'm in on a price drop.

I've bought 2 new ones for $350+. I'd say $160 is worth it. DOJBLEX doesn't seem to drop in value much. Last time I checked $70 was the minimum. EDIT: Looks like $65 on ebay.

I definitely paid over $300. $160 sounds like a great deal, just make sure it's a reliable model.

When people say 3D they mean stereoscopic 3D, not polygons.

Well I'm still fighting that battle (in my head). *shakes cane*

the arcade I bought was $280 not including shipping fees which put it up at around $325. luckily already had a 360 HD that I could throw in it. then again, it was 2010 and it might be cheaper now.

SolarisJapan have preowned Japanese 360 consoles with 250GB for $160 and 4GB model for $120. I bought my Japanese 360 from them, although I bought new for $290 - I am always worried about buying preowned consoles. I did buy Raiden Fighters Aces from them preowned and was very happy with it's condition though.

So... while the PSN sale is still going on, how's Mamorukun Curse?

I'm generally inclined to give G.Rev the benefit of the doubt

On the same subject, is Kokuga (3DS) worth $15? I've had my 3DS for a year now and I don't think it's ever gone on sale, but it seems silly to pass up an original Iuchi game for that much.

Mamorukun is totally worth the $3-$5 on sale.

Kokuga is just OK. If the game never goes on sale, wait for one of those Best Buy 20% off eshop point card sales. They happen at least once a quarter seemingly.

I bought mamorukun for $60+ and still think it was worth it. The style is pretty much Pocky & Rocky but with more bullets. It's a lot of fun :>

Concerning Kokuga, I like it. It's very different. It's also pretty challenging.

For what it's worth, it also has 4-player co-op download play.

Momorukun is easily one of my favorite shooter on PSN - worth full price IMO. Really fun and challenging shooter.

You are right, so maybe I wasn't talking about stereoscopic 3D after all.

I saw some Gameplay footage and it looks sprite-based. Completely redone sprites compared to both Genesis and GBA versions. Looks like the definitive version. (Till it gets remade again on a newer system)

Been playing Dogyuun via MAME tonight. Always thought it was an excellent shmup.

Also enjoying V-Five (Grind Stormer) arcade / Genesis,

So, what the hell are you talking about? Steel Empire 3DS doesn't use polygons.

You are right and I was wrong. I thought the game was redone using polygons like Sayonara Umihara. Seems the only thing uglified in this new version of Steel Empire are the explosions.

Yeah Grind Stormer! I always regretted not getting that Genesis cart. So maybe it wasn't the best port, but the cover was awesome!

I wouldn't necessarily regret it. There's an issue with tengen carts dying out pretty quickly. both of the carts that I bought from separate vendors on ebay were dead. then I found the shmups thread about it haha

----

anyway, been playing my garegga board lately with little-to-no progress.

been having mini meet ups with some members from the shmups forums/trading boards, and we're finally getting around to setting up the Chicago shmups meet this year in October. gonna be at galloping ghost arcade this year, so it should be awesome since a handful of members want to see the united states largest arcade :>

pretty exciting stuff

Ew, I did not know that about Tengen carts. Thanks for the tip.

I hope this is cool with everyone, but I've been developing my shmup over the past few years "Shwip" and wanted to spread the word to fans of the genre. Feel free to rip it apart! It's more superstardust, geometry wars rather than crazy bullet hell action, though we have 3 modes that offer different play styles.

Our main header is that you have a whip that's incredibly satisfying to use, along with the regular cannon, missiles, etc. There's also ship abilities like a boost and blast defensive attack. Check it out! Our site is here:

^^Haha, few games a 4 different titles...

I stumbled upon an awesome website with shooting game developer interviews and translations, but I assume it's against TOS to post it here. :/

I dunno bruh

how does it control?
it makes me want to buy a controller for it.

but it controls ok, I guess, I miss the fire button a lot so I'm gonna beef up its size to see if that helps. touch screen ship movement actually seems fair as your speed isn't broken like the cave games. but that means if you're used to those you're gonna draw past your ship a lot of the time.

cool options with scanlines and aspect ratios, but no windowed mode like in KoF 98.

the game itself is really cool, lots of neat ships and a good simple scoring system

As much as the speed was broken in the Cave iOS ports it made them super playable. They're like the only games I play on my phone because of how well they did porting them and being smart about the controls.

My copy of Espgaluda 2 on Android for my Samsung Galaxy Note 10in tablet CRASHES on level 2 every single time :C

If I knew a way around that I'd agree and play the shit out of it and buy the rest. Especially Deathsmiles since it ADDS ANOTHER CHARACTER.
;_;

Deathsmiles for Android won't fucking start on my HTC One. And it was my favorite from the Android Cave games. :(

Yeah, that's why I understood why Cave went with iOS to start. They knew it'd be one or a couple hardware device with similar specifications so the game would always know how to run properly.

Holy crap...I just tried uninstall reinstall and got Espgaluda 2 to work on android for my tablet in Smartphone mode. Not certain if it holds up in arcade mode, but at least I got to beat it! (so frigging close to a no continue run)

This gives me hope for playing Deathsmiles now. The mobile version is completely different in that you play as a new character from the audio drama called Princess Tiara and now there is item shop stuff from Sakura. Pretty cool and fun side story to the original Gilverado stories so I'm pretty excited. Here's hoping Espgaluda runs fine on Arcade mode. If so...I'll probably blow the cash and try it.

Fingers crossed...there is hope now.
