Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Isn't Iuchi tryna make a PS4 game too? I guess it's not guaranteed STG though.

Is that the Ikaruga guy? I believe that would be Ubusana for the PS4. All this stuff is obviously all up in the air, and stuff will change, but it's nice to see these smaller devs getting in on the ground floor, unlike the previous gen.

Used to I was mostly playing DoDonPachi DaiOuJou and trying to master it.

But lately I've gone back and have been trying to play DonPachi.
It's still very challenging and I'm not very good at it. But maybe it's better for beginners because I've done a little better at it I think than DoDonPachi DaiOuJou.

Right now I'm still just trying to 1cc the games. I'll have to worry about scoring later.
I try scoring on the first stages and getting lots of combos. But afterwards I give up and try to just 1cc the game.

I've seen some scoring videos, and scoring seems really hard. Especially in DaiOuJou and later games. You have to really memorize where enemy ships show up. And pay a lot of attention to your gauge to make sure you don't lose a combo. Using hypers seems complicated, too.

That's easily the most enjoyable way to play them, as far as I'm concerned. I care about scoring to the point that it can help you get extends, but I can't get too into scoring if I can't clear the game.

And DonPachi is definitely an easier game than DaiOuJou. DaiOuJou is considered pretty tough.

Isn't there a milsetone comp in the works too? Or was that 360?

not a fan of their games, but it's something
Yeah, the Milestone collection is coming and it's called "Sakura Flamingo Archives", here's the Xbox.com site. I haven't played a single one of the Milestone shmups, but what I've seen from here either people hate them or really like them. Honestly, if it's 5 games in one disc I'll get it just to check what they're about.

Is Ikaruga and Dodonpachi Resurrection for Android good versions? Just got a Nexus 5 (upgraded from Galaxy S2) and figured i'd get into mobile gaming abit.

Be interesting to find out, there are a pair of 245s known to be an issue sometimes too, right next to them.

not sure if that's common knowledge, but I feel like I should give him a heads up about that too. I'm just hoping it's not too expensive of a fix, but honestly wouldn't have known what to do without your advice haha.

board should be there by friday so I'm hoping to get it back by sometime in october.

yea, there sorta was but it's kinda dead in the water.

and speaking of... my battle garegga board is having graphical glitches/streaking as of this week

had to send it in for repairs today haha :(
gosh darnit

Garegga is maybe my fave shooter.

I've wanted to get the PCB, I currently own the not too shabby Saturn port.

Hearing the current problems wiith the Garegga boards makes me (almost) glad that I didn't pick one up a few years back. I imagine the worry about that, and the stress if one started going bad would be a right sufference.

Hope your board gets sorted ... I do have Bakkraid and Batrider pcb's and I've heard a few rumours about those too. Fortunately mine seem ok.

Speaking of something more recent, wasn't there meant to be a big problem with one of the 'black label' boards, or DOJ or something?

Thing is, as the years go by we should accept the risk for owning original hardware, it won't last forever ... savour it while you can, when it gets fixed.

Well it seems crazy that a forum as big as NGaf doesn't have a thread about arcade gaming. It's almost a spite to its legacy.

The reality of it is that anyone who has a PC can play pretty much any arcade game they want, whenever and almost whereever they want, and only a small proportion of largely starting-to-get oldish gamers want to experience the original hardware.

Perhaps some of us here could try to piece togather some content for an official thread first post. Even then, if it atracts little traffic we can still have a thread that we can bookmark as the go to place for speciic news, advice and arcade chat etc?

don't get me wrong, I don't plan on ever letting go of my garegga board (as of right now at least ;)), but the same issue applies to the full bat trilogy, so be careful with your boards. also the saturn port is just as good (if not better depending on your preference(s)).
it was actually playing fine a couple weeks ago before I took a 2 week break, and as soon as I booted it.. it went haywire.

I have the korean b batrider board, but I was considering letting that one go even though I have a blast every time I play it. I love that the extends aren't item-based on the korean version, but you can't adjust the shot frequency like you can on the japanese boards.
been really wanting a bakraid and ketsui boards, but my arcade gaming funds have dissipated for the most part and those purchases probably won't happen for awhile... unless I sell some boards.

and I think you might be right about DOJ, I just haven't looked into it since I'm not the biggest fan haha.

My copy of Espgaluda 2 and Mushi Futari will be here soon. Hype levels are high.

Word of advice for Galuda 2 - watch some high-level gameplay online to get a feel for how it works. The system may seem complicated at first without seeing someone else play it who knows what they're doing. Once I watched a video, it sort of "clicked" for me and I fell in love with that game!

Not sure how big it is or if there's BL specific ones, but there's one I know of for the PGM based games (DOJ, Ketsui, Espgaluda). They have a battery on board for saving settings I guess (some people have done hacks to save score too iirc), fine when played regularly enough, but left alone unplayed for a while the battery tends to barf.

Like mine did, which I found out when preparing to sell it at a shmupmeet last year:

Luckily I was able to clean it up and there was no damage to the board/traces, got it sold and it's still working to this day apparently. You can swap the battery or just snip the leads, I did the latter to all mine (even though Ketsui and Espgaluda were fine) cause I play with the defaults anyway and I didn't want to worry about it in the future. (On a side note I basically flipped some of the money into viletim's JAMMA adapter so I could play 360 on my cab and built this little rig, which hangs on the PCB shelf using the rails and hooks on the right...barely fits in the front door.)

As for other issues uh, the CV1000 boards (pretty much the stuff after the PGM games) can be supposedly touchy with one of the Astro City PSUs. That's partially why I haven't bought Mushihime, I'm not entirely sure my PSU is fine (not the known problematic one, but I don't think I ever got confirmation that it's totally fine either). Otherwise there's some issue with the video output on it (or it might be Futari) that can fail and screw up color, there's a fix but hell if I have the soldering skill to do it. I'm not sure it affects the other CV1000 games.

Then there's the issue (if you can call it that) of different versions of games, like bug fixes or feature tweaks or whatever. I'm not sure there's ROMs for the CV1000 so it might not be a huge deal. You can get them for the PGM games (including BL and hacks!), and presumably the older stuff...other than DDP Blue/Special/whatever you want to call it, hopefully that gets dumped some day.

I just replace the Varta's on the PGM hardware every 5 years or so, a PGM mobo has the same leaking battery .
Doj BL is a different story as the battery also powers the encrypted ram on the board and when it dies the ram is wiped and the board suicides, CAVE used to revive them for a ( hefty ) fee when that happened but stopped that service, some one on the shmups forum will do it if you send him the board and a new battery .

I've been playing a lot of Espgaluda on my PS2, I love it so much now. There's something better about playing a shmup on a tated CRT to me. PS2 component output helps with that too.

I have a $5 play-asia code. First person to PM me with a link to a post that they made in this very thread gets it. GO

There's a thread about it, but in case you missed it: in the Hideki Kamiya's Video Games IGN video (accompanying article here), the man himself is seen

  • playing his Fantasy Zone board on a Blast City cabinet,
  • cabinet next to it in the background with the original Twin Bee,
  • playing Space Harrier on the original US arcade cabinet,
  • playing Gradius on a cocktail table,
  • showing three-screen wide Darius attract mode, as he's afraid of playing it for the board itself seems to be fragile,
  • a very brief shoot of After Burner at the beginning when he is setting up.
And all that happens in his basement.

Kamiya is cool as heck.

This was announced a while ago. Qute and Triangle service are making X1 shooters as well.
http://gematsu.com/2014/06/new-azito-raiden-announced-xbox-one

No need to get upset. X1 is region free.

I know, definitely better than last gen's situation, just figured since Xbox is clearly not going to do well in japan (see also the latest mediacreate thread) the Xbox shmup trend wouldn't continue into this gen. Especially annoying is the "late port with added content" angle--which Raiden's already got in on, so I'm not sure how confident I'd feel in buying.

Wonder if Cave will still leave those huge "THIS SOFTWARE IS ONLY FOR USE IN JAPAN" screens in games now that there's no region protection of any kind...assuming they ever make another port. Or...game.

Does Cave exist anymore in any form? I heard they lost a sizeable chunk of their team to M2...

Don't expect the new Raiden to remain Xbone exclusive. Xbone is even more dead than 360 in Japan already, and Raiden IV also came to Playstation eventually.
And as far as Cave is concerned, they are dead for all intents and purposes; most if not all of their talent has moved on by now, eg. to M2 who are currently creating a PS4 shooter. I'd be surprised if Cave made another arcade shooter.

DonPachi is definitely easier. It has a weird difficulty curve in that it's pretty easy for most of it then ramps up at the end. DoDonPachi has a perfect difficulty curve though in my opinion.

CAVE still exists and they are still licensing out their games/IPs, so we might plausibly get a few more ports.compilations, at the very least.

They recently announced a new Mushi game for smartphones; it's being developed and published by some obscure Korean smartphone joint and looks to be based on the Futari port but with all the usual smartphone bullshit tacked on. Every generation needs a Bee Storm, I guess.

So I went to the MS booth and looked everywhere for Raiden V and Natsuki Chronicle. No video anywhere to be seen.

I even asked three separate booth employees about both of them and none of them even knew what Raiden was.

.......

Bummer.

Was there any stuff on Sakura Flamingo for 360 anywhere?

Nope. The XBO booth was pretty much focused on AA, AAA stuff besides a few quirky Japanese exclusives like Mages' adventure games and SWERY's D4.

Oh, here's one thing that came out of today:

well shit. At least they didn't think it was MGS like certain gaffers

Huh. Per shmups.com twitter, PC Engine version of Soldier Blade is coming to Wii U VC in Japan.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/software/vc/pntj/index.html

(shmups said 3DS, but site is wii u)

Does Japan already have PC Engine on wii u? I have like two dozen shmups on Wii VC and not a single one has a Wii U version yet. Not sure I want to spend all the money to convert all of 'em, but being able to play my favs without awful gross wii mode would be sweet. Wonder if this will come to US, it was unprecedentedly cool that they brought over some stuff like Final Soldier and Fantasy Zone on Wii.

Yeah, looking at it now it looks like they have quite a few PCE games on it. Even MSX games. Shit. I didn't need to know this, I don't want to buy a Japanese Wii U.
