Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Picked up Under Defeat HD on PSN. Haven't played the DC version in years but this is a nice update and a steal at 2.99. Plays real nice on my sit down cab.

Very few people are crazy enough to buy the same game twice, especially at $70 a pop.
I skipped Mamorukun on PS3 because that game is junk.
We'd need something new and original to really test the market, but after such a long head start for the 360, any new PS3 exclusive would be sent to die.

I guess we'll see that with the PS4/One this time around. Both platforms have new games announced already and people will start lining up soon.

Apparently Caladrius Blaze sold 1,967 its debut week. Sounds like another Ketsui situation. Is the genre not as popular on PS3?

Don't late ports tend to sell pretty lamely in general? Plus yeah, gen 7 is over and 360, despite all odds, somehow is the victor for shmups.

Personally I'm hoping all these start moving to PS4, passed on this one because I'm not too interested in full retail price having just bought a bunch of other shmups. If it were like Raiden Overkill and was $20 on PSN yeah I'd have gotten it.

Oh, I almost forgot. I tested Caladrius Blaze with a PS3 joystick today. It totally works, if anyone is holding out for confirmation. LOL

I'm currently having a fun time on a shmup group with someone who is trying to claim the PS3 had a better lineup of shmups than the 360. We pointed out Cave, he says remove that, we do and point out things like Caldrius, Eschatos, Ginga Force, Bullet Soul, Senko No Ronde Duo, Raystorm HD, Raiden IV, Bangai O and more...

...he then has us remove region locked, ports, and non exclusives like Shikigami 3.

Its a ludicrous and hilarious conversation from the guy, but its got me thinking...just how many shmups are their on the 360 total? The number seems huge. I know Giantbomb put out a list of 60 titles years ago and there have been a lot more released since then.

Anyone wanna help list all the titles out there for the 360 that are shmups?

I want a Progear Wii U port.

Dat gamepad tho..

Soldier X2 fan I take it...

Sounds like a nightmare. Dat lag/30fps + WiiU being the only region locked Gen 8 system is a bad match.

There are like 45-ish normal releases. Proper shooters. This is a well-maintained list.

Fired up Mushi Futari, hadn't played it in a while and got my first 1cc this year! :D

The Wii U pad runs at 60fps and the very small amount of lag is perfectly acceptable, even for shooters. Except for Virtual Console games, they have an extra frame of lag when played on the pad for some reason.

I have to be honest, I'm not sure shmups are for me anymore. I've been playing them a lot since around 2002 and have had a ton of fun with many of them. I've even 1CC'ed my fair share of stuff. I think it might be time for me to move on now.

I had some XBL money burning a hole in my pocket and finally decided to pick up Raiden IV today. I thought I'd like it since I liked 3 and Aces but this hasn't done anything for me. I think I'm at a point in my life where I don't want to play games that are too frustrating anymore. I just want to relax and Raiden wasn't helping me do that. I guess my shmup playing has been slowing down in the last couple years anyway. I spent a lot of time and money buying these games over the years and I had a lot fun. They are the main reason I own an import PS2 but it might be time to let go for me.

Sorry for the rant folks.

To be fair, Raiden IV is a rote memorizer characterized by insta-death ultra-fast bullets and sniper tanks on the bottom 15% of the screen. It is, in my opinion, a horrible game.

Next time you pick up a shooter, toss a credit in Mushi Futari, Muchi Pork or Mamoru-kun Curse. These are my three go-to games when I need to remember how much I love the genre.

I picked up Raiden IV Overkill recently and was having a hard time getting into it. I got Crimzon Clover around the same time, so it's not genre burnout, but I was having a lot of trouble getting into it. Enemy bullets are extremely difficult to see and I don't understand the powerup system. Any tips for this one?

People are shitting on Raiden now? The hell? Anyway, I'd recommend Crimzon Clover if you want a refresh your memory of why shooting games are awesome. Or like Boss suggests, a golden classic.

I really like Caladrius. The elemental attacks add a nice variance to each pilot. Game has a nice ramp of difficulty going from level to level.

I do find it hilarious that all three games I imported this month feature clothing destruction.

Mamorokun-Curse goes on the "great game design/terrible visual design" pile with Deathsmiles

I like DeathSmiles's visual aesthetics :<

Hey, I'm open to new things, but Raiden IV didn't do it for me. I did go through the trouble of setting up a j-PSN account to buy Dodonpachi, and so far I like that much better.

Good man! Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Raiden IV is the best fucking thing ever, but it's solid. It's a very different game from stuff like DoDonPachi, a bit of an acquired taste if you will. And if we want to shit on Raiden, III is the game to do it on. Bleh!

Edit: Am I crazy or did I read something somewhere that said DonPachi (the first one) was CAVE's homage to Raiden?

I love Deathsmiles but I can't bring myself to play it in front of others. Moe is like the STD of shmups.

Yeah, in general the Cave games with moe-ass character design still tend to look great in-game and only rarely subject you to said characters.

The boxes are a bigger issue than anything on-screen, basically, lol.

Still gotta smh @ that North American Deathsmiles ad copy on the back. That's an epic fail.

Truly next-gen gameplay feature. Caladrius has clothing destruction? I guess that explains the cover.

I own the JP one and I kinda want to buy the US one just because of the ridiculous as hell box quote.

How can people not like Deathsmiles' visual design? I mean... ＴＹＲＡＮＮＯＳＡＴＡＮ. Need I say more?

I didn't shit on it per se, I merely farted in its general direction...

Just kidding, of course. But Mamoru is really a fun and different game. I love it!

Raiden IV is fun but I generally like it for its crazy-awesome music. I usually just continue a few times for fun.

Not sure where else to ask this, but is there, or was there ever a thread dedicated to arcade gaming & hardware - like about cabinets and superguns etc?

Could always make a new one. If you're passionate enough about it, people may eventually contribute.

Then again, Maximum Tune is DOA here despite my best efforts...

I was looking for an "Arcade GAF [OT]" just yesterday, and didn't find anything, heck, I barely found a couple of old threads on the subject.

As the topic has arised, I'll ask here: any good books regarding arcade games and hardware (specially japanese oriented) ? It seems like there's not much on the subject, "Arcade Mania" from Brian Ashcraft and HG's "Sega Arcade Classics Vol. 1".

Well..there is an MSX thread and a big box PC retro thread...PC engine thread still has legs. Dont see why an Arcade Hardware thread cant fly. Of course there is already a Neo Geo thread, but I guess that would cover retro and recent stuff.

It seems like arcade stuff gets mentioned here or the arcade stick thread occasionally...but that's probably just cause I have those two bookmarked. I thought there was an arcade thread of some sort a while back but that might've been one of those diversions in this thread.

yea, there sorta was but it's kinda dead in the water.

and speaking of... my battle garegga board is having graphical glitches/streaking as of this week

had to send it in for repairs today haha :(
gosh darnit

I'm not very intimate with PCB repairing, and although I did make sure the zakk roms I replaced were still positioned correctly.. I didn't want to tinker with anything else on the board before sending it to someone with experience in fixing garegga boards.

I messed with the voltage between 4.8v and 5.1v and I still got constant streaks and graphic glitching. system11 recommended the one person he knew in the US that could fix it, and he said it might be the 74LS273s which supposedly goes out on raizing boards.

here's just the boot screen and an example of the streaking I've been seeing through out.

happens on both my astro city and on my supergun/xm29 setup.

we'll find out soon enough -_-

You can always try to apply a little pressure on different parts on the board/chips when it´s playing to check for cold solder joints or bad contacts .

Good luck .

Looks like I rocked the boat a little bit with my Raiden IV opinion. That's really how I feel though, and I spent enough time with the game to get to Stage 5. To each their own...

============================
So I picked up the latest Famitsu, and there was something notable in there regarding shooters. Apparently at the XboxOne launch live stream, Asada (formerly of CAVE, now at Mages) mentioned that they have a shooter running on XboxOne now. It really could be anything, including another Bullet Soul. So I'm not getting my hopes up yet, but time will tell.

Ohh damn... It's hard not to have high hopes for shooters on Xbox one. No region protection (from what I can tell) would make this generation of importing so much easier.

Be interesting to find out, there are a pair of 245s known to be an issue sometimes too, right next to them.

Isn't there a milsetone comp in the works too? Or was that 360?

not a fan of their games, but it's something

That one looks like a 360 release. Can we start playing the "last-360-release" game yet? Ironically that turned out to be Karous for the Dreamcast, so these guys have a decent track record so far.

http://stg.liarsoft.org/ has a nice schedule of upcoming stuff.

The XBone so far has listed:
 • Natsuki Chronicles from Qute
 • Shooting Love Trillogy from *spits* Triangle Service
 • Raiden from Moss

All names are tentative and all are scheduled for a nebulous "2015."

PS4 has only Ubusana so far, but got a bunch of Arcade Archives from Hamster.

A decent start so far.

EDIT: Speak of the devil. Sakura Flamingo details. ??/?? + 5,800 yens.

EDIT2: Or not. Release date just got TBD'ed
