Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Holy shit! Mine!

But please tell me the framerate's hiccups have to do with the video and not the game?

The game runs flawlessly as far as we're concerned, you can find that in our review for it is pretty glowing:

It just went up, and FYI, we have five free copies of the game on Steam. All you guys have to do is comment on our review, we'll pick the winners in a week ;)

I played three stages of Crimzon Clover before I had to leave for a concert. I wish I could have kept it paused or something, but it became unresponsive when I alt+tabbed.

It's awesome. It reminds me how bad I am at shmups! At least it's not like when I play Crimzon it in the arcades... those are times best forgotten.

Anyone know how Shikigami no Shiro is doing? Its been awhile since the Castle Shikigami 3 release for Wii and I'd really like to see another sequel sometime. Anyone know how the company doing these is doing and if they've mentioned any plans?

Well, they just made Oreshika (the Vita RPG), so they seem to be alive and well. Never heard anything about a new Shikigami no Shiro, though.

Is Crimzon Clover going to become the new indie darling? How long until CC on Ouya?

Fuck Ouya, but I'd love a Linux port.

I hate to double-post, but that last one was a joke post, feel free to ignore it.

The point is, has anybody gotten to try Musou mode in Bullet Soul? It's kind of... good? They crank the player ship fire power way the fuck up, and increase the amount of enemies by at least 100%. It totally changes the balance of the game. It becomes way more frantic, and fun. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I quite like this mode, and don't want to ever go back to Normal or Burst.

If it weren't for the stupid region lock, STGs on WiiU could have been great; with Off-TV and maybe they could have even used an optional Tate mode on the GamePad with touch controls or something. But no...., stupid region lock. I really hope PS4 or XBox One will be the dedicated STG console this time, even if I don't own either yet.

That is great news on XBox One shooters. Kinda cool they are supporting the MS machine again. I'm gonna get one (or re-buy one since I sold mine for a second Wii U) in 2015. Gotta get the new Qute game!

Wth is Sony doing...hopefully they get shooters this time as well, at least out the gate.

XBone purchase redeemed, it seems I ain't gonna get rid of mine after Halo 5, all things considered...

Unless PS4's gonna get the same STG releases :P

Did anyone here buy the Cave Shooting Collection Kan from Nin-Nin-Game? I'm kinda pissed that apparently they aren't sending the replacement DLC discs that Microsoft Japan is issuing to everyone who bought the collection.

Check the Shumps Thread about it. Nin-Nin also had a ton of drama with the last one and the collection of bonus OSTs.

Arguably the better console for those games. I hope Nintendo gets some classic shmup action on the Wii U soon.

What's the argument for it being a better console for shooting games, exactly? As someone who plays on arcade sticks I find it worrying that the only arcade style controllers currently compatible with WiiU are all wireless.

I can see them being awesome for off-screen play on the gamepad with headphones for a very intimate experience. Other than that, nothing. Even trying tate on the pad would kinda be a drag.

Never really run into lag other than in the Remix games. Stick situation for Wii U is dire.

Now that there's going to be a Gamecube adapter for Smash, I'm assuming they can add Gamecube compatibility if you want a wired stick, yeah? Multi-console Cthulhu to the rescue (or back to the old days of the SoulCalibur2 stick)! Wasn't there a thread here before too that talked about how the Gamepad had less lag than a lot of people's TVs? Offscreen tate does sound pretty neat.

Still wouldn't want any shmups on it due to no region free.

Yeah I really hope that GCN adapter leads to wired control for games outside of Smash. I hope they open it up so 3rd parties can use it. I could see them closing it off so it doesn't kill sales of their new classic controller accessories though :(

Hey guys I'm new to the genre and I hardly know anything about it but have recently been playing progear (a cave game for cps2) and was wondering what you guys thought of it/ would recommend for someone who enjoys it.

Progear rules. Cave's other horizontal shooters are Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles 2, both great and both on 360. Deathsmiles 2 is only available on Games on Demand. I'd suggest starting with the original. It's pretty easy to suggest Cave's vertical games, too, as Progear is probably closer to them than it is most non-Cave horizontal shooters, and I talk about those in a post above (play Espgaluda if you can play Japanese PS2 games, play the region-free Mushihimesama Futari if you have a 360).

*notes conspicuous absence of Akai Katana mention*

akai katana (horizontal cave shooter) and ketsui are the closest shmups to Progear. The bullet spreads in Progear are very similar to Ketsui and many think that Akai Katana was a directly inspired by Progear though I'm not sure if that's true or not (much easier to 1CC that's for sure). Progear is my absolute favorite CAVE shmup though - the steampunk theme, gem bullet/cancelling scoring system, and organic bullet spreads are among my favorite in the genre. I still have been having trouble meeting the loop requirements, but I do have the 1-ALL on lock at least...

if you're decent at scoring.. you should submit some scores to the shmups.system11 Progear hi-score thread which will probably up your addiction to the game even more ;)

Years of support for J-360 and I'm kinda down with it. Kinda cool in a backwards kinda way (again).

I agree. I hate to be the "Japanese culture expert," but it's very in keeping with how Japanese do business. We had a good relationship last time, so let's keep it that way.

Last time there was a valid reason for it - launched earlier, easier to develop for, they had no idea how quickly the demand would fall off a cliff.

This time it's just mindless, unless it's moneyhats all round again.

Well I feel like shmups are the kind of games I want to bring around with me, so the whole gamepad thing is appealing to me in that sense. Right now I have a PS2 converter for the Wii so it's no problem as I have a Sega Saturn PS2 pad.

Bad news that Xbox One is picking up shooters in Japan, such a foolish move to publish on that system compared to the PS4.

Doesn't make sense to me either unless:
  • Sony Japan is not a good partner for these smaller studios, has screwed them over in the past.
  • They are trying to grow their install base by continuing on a MS console.
  • Perhaps the devs just like working with MS, possibly because of moneyhat possibly because MS gives them a better deal.

Either way, I don't own a XONE and never will so if they eventually come out for PS4 cool if not, c'est la vie.

Shooter fans go where the shooters go so XBox One is no biggie.

I just hope it truly is region-free and not tagged with some silly IP blocking or something. And hoping for retail releases (since those are fun to buy).
