Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

No, sorry. Just got inspired to make this. Maybe it can somehow make the rounds and kindle an interest.
Boo-urns. Got me all hot and bothered for nothing.
Nice boxart though, looks like something 505 Games would do.

However, there IS a new Raiden coming out, although it's for the wrong machine.

Oh well, back to the hunt for cheap Asses to Breed...

Seems the new Raiden game might not be exclusive to XBox One after all. UFO actually made a post about it on the US PS Blog, but didn't mention a platform.

And to the question why an XBox One game would be mentioned on the PS Blog they answer:

UFO said:
Although the next Raiden game was announced in Japan for Xbox One, there is no official word yet on whether it will be exclusive to that system for any amount of time.

Make of that what you will.

idk if I like the Saturn stage in DoDonpachi. it's hard to chain for the first bit and throws the balance off of the next stage since you're so powered up. looks pretty at least

Been playing on my Mac through Crossover (aka Wine) and the update got full screen working for me. Also just built a new stick (PS360+ based) which works...albeit I didn't get a chance to try before the update so I don't know if that's necessarily new.
How well is that running for you? System specs?

I'm running it on my Win 7 partition, but I would install on the OSX side if it's stable enough.

Runs pretty well I think, there's slowdowns but I can't tell if they're the intentional type or not (i.e. they're when there's a bunch of stuff happening on screen). I've had weird pauses before but haven't seen that much, those might've been due to something else going on on my computer.

I have a 2011 Mac mini w/Radeon (6630M I think), dual core i5 (Sandy Bridge) 2.5ghz or so. In Crossover I'm using the Steam bottle, just installed it from Steam in there. Well I just remembered one weird quirk, every launch it brings up something like "installing DirectX", only lasts a few seconds at least.

Ah, I see. I'm at about half that with my late 2009 MB. I guess it's Windows 7 for me.

I dip into the 30 fps range when I Double Break with a bunch of larger enemies on screen. I've only had the frame rate police bar dip into the red once in normal mode, but I have a feeling I'm going to experience some disqualified scores if I push any harder.

Edit: I can drop the resolution to 1024 for a more stable frame rate, but it pixelates things enough that bullets are more difficult to see.

Game looks pretty cool. I always wanted to try it.

Actually I think I bought it when it first came out on PSN, lol. I've certainly never played it though.

Yeah, Wolf Fang is something that I've only dabbled in but it seems badass. I instinctively associate it with Chelnov, which rules, due to it being a Data East auto-scrolling run and gun.

Talking about PSOne classics, what's the consensus on Gunbird? Does it run ok?

Well it looks like Wolf Fang isn't happening. I only have $8.50ish left on this Vanilla Visa and PSN only allows you to add funds in increments of $5, $10, etc.

Can you gift PSN games? Does anyone want to sell it to me?

Scratch that. I dove into the couch and made up the difference. I'll swing by Best Buy or something tomorrow and get a PSN card.

Alright, so Wolf Fang is pretty great. I thought the restricted movement would bother me, being a forced scrolling run n' gun, but there's a lot of terrain variation. When you play the game, it feels more like a standard shmup.

I recommend it. It's too bad I won't be able to try out co-op until I pick up a Vita VT (err Playstation TV).

Hey guys--just got a japanese Xbox 360 and some games. My first question is if there's some site or something where I can find what all the Japanese menus mean. Most of the games are Cave Co, should I ask that here or in the Cave Megathread?

Which game are you referring to? I only remember Akai Katana being an issue as far as the Cave releases go... the rest largely have menus in English.

Deathsmiles has a few UI elements in kanji, one's difficulty level or something, but one (at the character select screen) I don't even know what it's supposed to do. I don't have the rest of the games yet, I just figured it'd be a recurring theme. I also think Otomedius had some Japanese menus but...I don't really need to play any more of that, only played because it came with the 360.

I don't remember a difficulty select option in kanji (you pick Lv1, Lv2, Lv3, or Lv999 [in MBL mode] per stage). The option in character select is just picking whether or not you want to see the tutorial before being taken to stage select.

My bad it's in some kind of kana, the lvl 1/etc was english though. I'm also getting Mushi Mushi Pork/pink sweets, and I have Ketsui Extra and Under Defeat HD, do you know if those are all English UI stuff? My copy of Akai Katana should be in English...if the US one works in a JP xbox anyway. Most places only list if the JP version is region free, not the US version.

Pretty sure those are all in English though I don't personally own Under Defeat to check on that one.

US Akai Katana does NOT work on a JP console.

Guess I'll leave that one in it's wrapping then. Annoying, the imports are more than twice as expensive.

EDIT: Actually since I already have the JP 360 it almost seems like buying a US 360 (I can coincidentally get a used one with another copy of Akai katana for $120) might save me money if I grab the US version of those available here. Does that seem sane? I'm new to both importing and 360 over here. But that's also $120 I could put towards just getting the damn Cave Collection. Not too happy about the cheapo collection box though.

I just got Akai Katana! As a total noob in the genere, which of the 3 modes should I play? I believe I should start with Shin...

I'm new to the Jap 360 import scene as well and learned it the hard way (never had a US 360 either): J Raiden IV is around $75 and J Raiden Fighters Aces is at least $125 over there in Japan. I finally end up biting the bullet, but the pill was hard to swallow when you know how cheap the US versions of these games go for.

Mushi Mushi Pork and Pink Sweets are all English where it matters. Guess Deathsmiles was a fluke.

Anyone know much about Under Defeat HD? It came with my 360 and to my surprise there is what appears to be a Dreamcast case with it?? Some sort of limited edition. I almost don't want to open it. Is the PS3 version with the "American" boxart the same gameplay-wise?

Ouch. I have Raiden IV Overkill on PSN...$20. I like physical but I think I can make due with Overkill. In this case Akai is $12(!) in the US and around $60-$80 for JP, though I might have found it for $35 and I kind of want to buy that because it's "cheap" relative to the batch. It's fun having a stack of imports though. My only prior import is a copy of Motto Sonicomi, which is much more Visual Novel than I was expecting (and I can't read a word of it)

The bonus Dreamcast disc on the LE is a replay DVD. The North American Release is the same contentwise as the Japanese version, and it also comes with the DLC free of charge.

I think I'll grab the PS3 version and leave this unopened then. Why's it a Dreamcast disk? Does it actually only play on Dreamcasts? I think I lost mine, I thought that used CDs anyway.

So I noticed while playing Otomedius I really miss the Gradius power up system, but Otomedius is...not a good game. I enjoyed Gradius 3 except for the difficulty (losing all power ups during the "boss rush" bit is insanely unfair), I liked Rebirth except for the extremely limited ship customizations.

Should I check out Gradius 4 or 5? Otomedius is unfortunately exactly what I would like customization-wise, but the massive hitbox and generally lame level/boss design are too much a hurdle to enjoy.

4 is okay but not great. I was really let down by it because it's a huge step back from Gradius Gaiden, which you should play instead, if you haven't already. It's a PS1 game but is also on the Gradius collection for the PSP.

Gradius 5 is fantastic, it plays a lot differently from the other Gradius games due to its pacing, its option control, and the fact that it's set to auto-resurrect by default.

Yeah, Gradius Gaiden is awesome. It's one of those games that doesn't run properly on PS2s though, so keep that in mind if you don't have a PS1 hooked up.

Press B while in the menu and you'll be treated to a nice and lengthy tutorial.

Shin/Slash is what I started with, it's the most fun game mode in my opinion, building katanas by collecting steel then launching them against the enemies/bosses is addictive.

I started on Novice, playing on one credit and I got further and further every time until I managed to clear the game. Now I'm doing it all over again on Normal, I still can't get past Stage 6, though.

Which if any have the most options available for customizing your power up? I was super let down by the 3 presets in Rebirth.

Hadn't heard of Gaiden...aaaaand of course it's not on PSN. Well, $15 used is better than I was expecting.

What? I didn't even realize that was...a thing. I only have a PS3 and PC, and I've never been great at setting up my PSX emulator. Is the PS3 going to run it fine?

PS1 games have intrinsic input lag when playing on PS3, so it's not really an ideal way to play shooting games. I've never tired GG on PS3 to see if it suffers the same issues as running on a PS2, but I would guess that might come down to which version PS3 you have (hardware vs software BC).

Sounds like Gradius Collection on Vita would be the best way to go then? I have a hardware BC PS3 but I never got done with attempting to repair it (opening that thing is a nightmare). I played Mega Man X4 pretty decently on my slim PS3 though, didn't realize there was much input lag.

Thanks! I'll give it a shoot (ahem) tonight.

Edit: I got up to the 2nd boss in Slash. As far as I can tell, it's way more involving than Origin mode. The manual is great too, very throughout on explaining the systems in place, and in full color!

I kind of get that the basis of Slash mmode is to first fill up the energy, then stock on steel to finally transform into phantom, get katanas and unleash them going back to fighter mode.

BTW is there an easy way to restart from the 1st level without going back to the title and char. select screen?

I re-bought an Xbox 360 recently because I never got a chance to play/buy Treasure's great ports/updates back when they were first released. Playing Radiant Silvergun for the first time and it's glorious. The thing is, I fucking suck nuts at arcade shooters. Maybe my age is showing, but I can't play these games for shit anymore. I'm inching my way through Story Mode (which I'm assuming is easier with the level-ups and such), but I don't even think I've technically made it to the third set of stages. =/

I'd like to think I was pretty decent at games like this growing up (first shooter was Sky Shark on NES followed by Sagaia on Genesis). I don't remember struggling so much when I was younger, ha! Man, I think my gaming skills peaked back during the PS2-era. I just can't handle intense gaming anymore lol!

I kinda wish the Treasure games got a disc release as well like some XBLA games got (think the Qubed compilation with Rez, Lumines Live, et al).

Fart, I didn't know there was a disk pack that included Rez! Are the games actually on disk or are they essentially download keys? I re-bought Rez too when I picked up the Treasure stuff. Oh well. =/
