Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Cloudphobia is on Steam!, here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/329340/

It seems incredible to me because I waited for years the game; it was blocked on Greenlight for unknow reasons so few years ago I bought on Desura as a DRM-free release.

Well, we all know the sad end of Desura so I jealously stored my backups because the only other way of buying it was via Yahoo Japan (boxed).

Fucking finally is arrived on Steam: good ending.

I bought this in one of the Indie Royale debut bundles, years ago.

...Somehow I don't think I'll be getting a key from that as promised.

I reccomend it, especially at this price (6.99$/€) because it's a nice shooter, imo.

I bought Cloudphobia a bunch of years ago directly from the maker's website for a few bucks. It wasn't hard to get, but having it on Steam is definitely more convenient. I also recommend it.

Looks like the DBCS CAVE DLC is landing next Thursday according to the official Twitter.

http://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000002911.000007006.html

It's also on the Steam product news for DBCS. The screenshots include English ship help screens but I think they're placeholders since the texts seem to describe the three ships from the Sega pack (unless the Cave ships work the same way?)

Super Galaxy Squadron EX has released their beta branch for the TURBO version of the game.

It comes with 3 new ships, new artwork, and a new game mechanic.

You can try the new update by typing "tunnelsnakesrule" in the beta tab. Also, this update is FREE to owners of EX. New Blood are awesome.

Here's a clip of stage 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stQSIaCHjZY

Looks like they didn't have the text for those ships ready yet. They are more than likely just there as place holders.

I'm really impressed with all the screen options this has.

What framerate setting should I use on a 1080p TV ... 60fps, 54fps, 54fps (True) ?

The original game ran at ~54FPS but MS doesn't let people output at exact refresh rates, so those three options are workarounds:

60FPS plays smoothly but is running a little faster than the original game; it's somewhat akin to playing certain bullet hell games without artificial slowdown.

54FPS outputs at 60FPS but they double every 9th frame or so to maintain the original game speed; some people really notice the micro-stutters, some don't. (50Hz PAL Virtual Console games running on Wii U do the same thing, for reference.)

54FPS (TRUE) also outputs at 60FPS but uses frame blending/interpolation instead of frame doubling, so rather than hard stutters everything looks unnaturally smooth--again, it's something that bothers some people a lot more than others.

Okay thanks for that reply. I'm going to try all three options, with each of the three Raiden Fighters games to see what I like.

Retro Core: Battle of the Ports - Viewpoint

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=934_MD7o6-k

This is one 16-bit shmup I never really knew much about. The FM-Towns version is a good port, of the Neo Geo original.

The X68000 version is surprisingly really poor, it's like the MD rendition with a bit more color and tons of slowdown / flicker.

The PS1 remake looks really cool.

Fantastic episode.

So as a fan of G Darius on PS1 would guys say that Darius Burst Chronicles is worth it for $23.99?

It's currently on sale for the holiday sale on PSN.

New update from Xydonia page: "New #XYDONIA boss WIP, this guy will start bugging you even before the actual encounter and alter the stage's structure with its attacks!"

I guess I'll give Super Galaxy Squadron another try, tomorrow. Though I don't think bullet time is going to fix what I didn't like about it the first times around.

... Wait, SGS was made by El Oshcuro? wat.

How can I get this on my US PS4?
It's not available outside Japan, for now. Make a JP account, get/redeem JP Store credit code, buy game on JP account, then play game on US account. There are plenty of in-depth guides online, google it.

EDIT: you could also import the Premium Edition box, but it's still a DL code for the game, so you definitely need a JP PSN account.

Tried out SGS... The slowdown ability helps a lot when the bullets get ridiculously fast, but it doesn't fix a lot of my problems with the game, like the really basic level design, how most of the ships don't change how you play that much... Or things I realized trying it out again, like how there's next-to-no mercy invincibility, meaning you can get railed on if you get lost in all the chaos! The new ships are probably the best, because they give you an actual reason to not hold down the fire button the entire time.

Xmas Shooting Scramble actually looks really neat! And I was somehow able to tell it was an Orange Juice game right off the bat, even though I haven't played one myself. :P

Flying red barrel is a polished shmup, problem is it only gives you a finite amount of credits.

But I couldnt grasp how scoring worked. Always got a bad rank.

Also never finished it. It gets difficult in the end and credits would run out. Once I barely made it to last stage with one life.

Never saw the ending. There is a playthrough on Youtube but with no ending, since it is based on a replay.

I avoid shmups that dont have infinite lcredits. Trouble Witches Origin does that as well? The Japanese PC version doesnt have infinite credits.

Yeah, what ChryZ said. Also if you buy the PSN credit from Pla-Asia, hope that your credit card processing company doesn't take 6 hours to process the international transaction. That sucked.

Playing the game again I'm quickly reminded that I never actually learned how to play Battle Garegga properly. Is there any good reason for the "formation change?"

I bought the Kamui/Reflex/Alltynex 2nd trilogy when it was on sale a few weeks ago. Very first impressions:

Kamui feels a bit old but I like what I played. I'll come back to that. The gimmick of enemies being in the background is cool.

Reflex I can't play right now because my 360 controller's analog stick isn't recognized correctly which is really strange. It's basically 4-way. My d-pad is broken so that's no option..I prefer using the analog stick usually.

Alltynex seems like good fun! Its different gameplay elements make for frantic runs because attacks like blade-mode and the special attacks are all quite useful. I love the flow so far.
'
My main shooters are still Mushihimesama and DDP:R. I'm slowly making progress, even though I still don't get the scoring but that's not my main focus right now. They are relaxing in a way, haha. I also regularly play Raiden IV and to a slightly lesser extent Eschatos. Those 4 games are pure joy!

You know what's sad and pathetic? I have played DARIUSBURST for over 125 hours and have yet to beat Gigantic Bite.

The last boss of the CAVE DLC is Gigantic Bite. I swear I had that thing almost dead and I choked. I really need to be CS mode and stop messing around with AC and DLC stuff.

I can't play any Japanese game on my US account. US account is primary, Japanese is secondary. Halp.

You can have multiple primary accounts on a single PS4.

I think there's a little confusion due to the terminology being used.

You can have several accounts on a device that is activated as their primary device. For example, Say you have a US account, and a Japanese account. You consider the US account as your main one for playing games, but this doesn't restrict other accounts from activating that console as their primary device.

As long as both accounts have activated the device as primary (in system settings, you need to log in to each account to check separately), then whatever game you download on whichever account you are currently logged into, you can switch to the other account and play it, earn trophies, etc. without limitation.

That's what I wanted to relay, but you used clearly more and better words (¬_¬ ;)

It's something Sony, while allowing you to do so, will never write a definitive guide in order to show people how to do it. I see it in so many import threads where people believe they're shut out of a game because it requires an regional account that differs to their own... and that they either a) can't set up said account, or b) that there's no way to access games bought with it on their local region account. The more people that realise how import friendly the PS4 can be, the better.

Hey, thought I'd drop a link here to my bullet hell shoot 'em up game which I've been making and have recently put up on greenlight.

There's a lot of ship customisation, being able to pick a variety of different weapons and abilities, and has a lot of different ship combinations.
It has a strong focus on the bosses, as I wanted to make really interesting boss fights which also each have unique challenges to make you change up your play style.

I've been neglecting my 360 for a year now.
But after getting back into Caladrius Blaze, this time on PS4, I felt the itch to finally pick up the couple of games I was still missing on 360, before they get even more expensive.

There's still a couple more on the way, but in the past week, these beauties already arrived.

I'm ready to do some damage! :)

So, on my Japanese account, I would just go to my account settings in account management and make it my primary?

It is strange, just yesterday played Reflex with my standard 360 joypad and analog works well. Have you tried repair installation files?

Anyway, I love all 3 games and personally I rank them as:
1)Alltynex 2nd
2)Kamui
3)Reflex

Hope to see new Siter Skain new game on Steam one day, I remember it from Comiket... Armed Dragon it was named ...?

Correct - this won't affect the setting for another account, it just makes your Japanese account recognise your PS4 as a primary device to make available any content you buy using that account available to any other logged in account on the system.

Cool, I'll try that today and see how it goes. Thanks man. I just bought Samurai Shodown from the Japanese PS4 store and it was all in English. Now, to get into some Battle Garegga....

An easy way to know it's working is, for any Japanese game on the home page (or in folders) that you access - if there's a padlock on the icon, the device has not been made primary to the Japanese account. If there's no padlock, you're good to go ahead and use that content on your other account.

Here's an awesome "new" shooter up for the ColecoVision! It's a port of Gradius for the ColecoVision with a Super Game Module. It's loaded with options, such as arcade and MSX mode. There is one extra stage not found in the original arcade and four hidden bonus stages. The cartridge also saves your high scores and settings when you turn off the system.

I received my copy yesterday and the packaging is amazing. Much better than most of the games that come out today. Here's a link to check it out.

Played quite a bit of Bullet Souls Infinite Burst tonight.
Really loving the game. Felt a little to easy at first, but when you concentrate on your score as well, it's hard enough I think.

Really liking the different modes as well.
The Burst mode really messes with my head though.
Being conditioned all these years to grab medals or coins as they drop down and now having to avoid them till they bounce of the bottom of the screen and go back upwards to then grab them is such a mindfuck and goes against nature. :)

Caravan Mode is brilliant!
I've never played a caravan mode that I didn't enjoy and if it were up to me every shoot em up should have one.

Hmmm....I reinstalled the game and borrowed a different 360 controller but it's still the same 4-way controls. In the steam discussions there were two people who had the same problem but there doesn't seem to be a solution.

I had an issue last night. On my Japanese account, I couldn't activate the system as my primary because it was done already on another system; which is weird because I just have one PS4. I went ahead and deactivated all of the PS systems under my Japanese account and then I was able to add it as primary. I wish I would have known this earlier. Thanks man, I truly appreciate it.

Funnily enough, I had to do the exact same thing, as I'm on my second PS4. Won't affect anyone who is setting up a new JP account for the first time, but definitely your first thing to check if things aren't working as expected for those with an existing JP account. Glad it worked out for you!
