Seriously, has nobody here heard of
Crimzon Clover yet? It's a doujin shmup released at the last Comic Market in December, and despite its so-called "indie" roots, Yotsubane's "0% moe,
120% FIYAAAAHHH!!!!1!1!" philosophy delivers a hyper-polished shooter that rivals Cave's own commercial products in sheer intensity.
The thing that separates Crimzon Clover from other, lesser shmups is that it makes you earn your progress. You're not just given continues; you have to buy them, among other things like new game modes, new ships and music for the sound test, using in-game points items (the stars you collect during gameplay) as currency. You want that shiny new Type II ship to tear things up with? Earn it. You want to practice a certain stage in pursuit of that elusive 1CC? Buy it. And the only way to earn that cheese is to play the game - again and again. That's certainly a way to increase your game's longevity!
Never mind the bollocks, though -
here's the demo! Have a go yourself and see what the guy is talking about when he says that his game embodies "Full exhilaration of intimacy 2D pixel art graphics and unparalleled shooting!"
Need to see the game in action before committing the bandwidth? OK!

And here's some screens to scratch that itch:
You can buy the game from your usual doujin stockist, like Tokyo Shmups (
http://www.sk8tokyo.com/shmup/), for a very reasonable price. But honestly, the trial version I've linked to above has three whole stages, a limited amount of stuff to buy in the shop, and plenty of replay value. But it's still not as good as the full game, so go out and buy it!
Thanks to everyone involved in the CC thread at
