Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I have been loving Futari 1.5 as well as Esp 2 on the US 360, and even been playing raiden 4 and RFA.

I am very close to pulling the trigger and ordering a JAP 360. The shipping and duties getting it here in Canada is the only thing stopping me. I have looked at www.play-asia.com and NCSX (doesnt have the 4gb slim). Any other places I should be looking?

It won't. DFK is the first candidate for a US/EU release. Pink Sweets / MMP is region free because no one would license a compilation of 2 old low-res games that weren't successful even in the arcades (Pink Sweets is probably the worst bomba Cave ever produced).

Oh well, no complaints here as long as it comes out in the US.

Seriously, has nobody here heard of Crimzon Clover yet? It's a doujin shmup released at the last Comic Market in December, and despite its so-called "indie" roots, Yotsubane's "0% moe, 120% FIYAAAAHHH!!!!1!1!" philosophy delivers a hyper-polished shooter that rivals Cave's own commercial products in sheer intensity.

The thing that separates Crimzon Clover from other, lesser shmups is that it makes you earn your progress. You're not just given continues; you have to buy them, among other things like new game modes, new ships and music for the sound test, using in-game points items (the stars you collect during gameplay) as currency. You want that shiny new Type II ship to tear things up with? Earn it. You want to practice a certain stage in pursuit of that elusive 1CC? Buy it. And the only way to earn that cheese is to play the game - again and again. That's certainly a way to increase your game's longevity!

Never mind the bollocks, though - here's the demo! Have a go yourself and see what the guy is talking about when he says that his game embodies "Full exhilaration of intimacy 2D pixel art graphics and unparalleled shooting!"

Need to see the game in action before committing the bandwidth? OK!

And here's some screens to scratch that itch:

You can buy the game from your usual doujin stockist, like Tokyo Shmups (http://www.sk8tokyo.com/shmup/), for a very reasonable price. But honestly, the trial version I've linked to above has three whole stages, a limited amount of stuff to buy in the shop, and plenty of replay value. But it's still not as good as the full game, so go out and buy it!

Thanks to everyone involved in the CC thread at http://shmups.system11.org/ for all the links and images. Couldn't have done it without you guys!

Dambrosi,

I went ahead and ordered CC and the OST based on your post. I've never owned a PC but I do have a windows partition on my Mac. Not sure if it will be able to run it there but there might be a chance...if not, i'll put it on the shelf for future use. I'll be able to use one of my sticks for ths game, right?

Tokyo Shmups sends you a retail disc of Crimzon Clover. Comes in a pretty nice looking dvd case. Hopefully Rockin Android or somebody else will eventually bring this game to the digital download services since it really deserves a bigger audience. It's a fantastic vertical shoot em up.

Unless something has changed in the last week or two, it's disc-only.

Ah, ok. I've honestly never heard of /used them so I wasn't sure how it worked. Is it like retail disc or just a burned disk?

Any other games besides Crimson worthwhile on that site?

Ah, sounds good. I'm assuming PS3 works similarly as plug-and-play.

Eh, with PS3 sticks it's a matter of luck. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't, it depends on your hardware. That's what I gather from forum comments, I never tried it on my pc.

Ah,

Most of my 360 sticks are better for shooters...was more curious about trying out the new Neo Geo pad.

Also, what type of specs are needed for the game? My roomate has an old 2006 beat-up Fujitsu Lifebook that he can let me borrow. This thing here (would it run it?):

It should be OK for the game. Why don't you download the demo and see for yourself?

HERE. PRESS THIS. THEN PRESS THE BIG GREEN BUTTON. SIMPLE.

Well, Flying Red Barrel is supposed to be really good, as is Samidare (but hella tough).

Tokyo Shmups has an extensive demo and freeware section, so try before you (hopefully) buy to your heart's content!

Oh and be sure to download Cho Ren Sha 68K and Blue Wish Resurrection Plus! if you haven't already - they're both freeware classics!

Dambrosi,

Did not even think about the demo. Will try that! Don't know much about PCs so did not even think about that. Thanks! Though the game is in route, already.

So, I got the demo of Crimson running on the old notebook fine (specs seem great for it) but I've absolutely no idea how to get a joystick working. The computer recognizes the VX-SE and then I downloaded Joy2Key but there is no preferences tab mentioned in adverse's link. Any ideas?

It's nice looking, but I'd much rather they just ported over Border Down and Under Defeat.
I love me some Under Defeat. It stiill looks gorgeous over VGA on DC though so I'm not Jonesing for a remake just yet.

Yes Boss!, make sure you have version 4.5.3 or above. I wound up having to download the Japanese version...

I am using Xpadder for Windows 7 with my 360 EX-SE and Crimzon Clover works great with it. You should try it, setting it up was really easy.

OK,

Will look for that version of Joy.

No access to Windows 7. This computer is old and has got something from a few years back. Also has a severely cracked screen so it looks like I will need to order a cheapy VGA cable from monoprice to get it to display on my HDTV.

Game is pretty awesome from what I tried. Can't wait to get the retail version in the mail. First PC game I've ever bought!

Xpadder supports Windows XP, Vista and 7, so I´d recommend that over Joy2key if you are on any of those OSs. And for best visual results try and play the game on an old CRT VGA monitor, it looks great on fullscreen 640x480 mode.

Ah, ok. Will try. I think the machine has XP.

No access to VGA CRT...just my HDTV now.. But nice to know for future when I get back to my Egret 3 with its tri-sync!

Success! Thanks everybody for the help!

As you can see, the laptop screen is cracked and half white on one side but a simple VGA cord will get the image onto my big screen.

Went with Xpadder since the layout was prettier and easier for me to understand. Next up I'll try to get the Neo Geo pad working.

The computer is old but it handled the very hectic second level very well with no hitches whatsoever.

It plays like a dream with a Hori stick. Excited! Thanks to this thread I'm introduced to a new world-class shooter!

I'm happy that Yes Boss! is so pleased with his purchase, CC really is in a class of its own.

Makes me feel good that I can spot a good shmup when I see one.

Oh yeah, did you download Cho Ren Sha 68K and Blue Wish Resurrection Plus! yet? If not, do it now!

I'll give those a shot! Now that I know they work on the PC I'll more inclined to check everything out. Hoping they look good on my big screen once my VGA cable comes in. Wondering if these wil play decently on a Windows-enabled Mac Mini? I'd be willing to buy one of those to put next to my Wii for PC-shooter games in my game center. Haven't had a computer for more than a year so I'm tempted to pick one up.

Sounds a lot like Mars Matrix, which was one of my faves.

Another two freeware shmups you should check out Yes Boss! are Patriot Dark and Demolition Gunner. Glad you're enjoying Crimzon Clover.

Ima gonna check out all the ones listed here! Perfect timing as I'm a bit beat from all the Cave titles over the last two years.

The Crimzon game is real, real nice. Only played the demo for an hour but I did earn about 2000 money points in it. 10000 for the first unlock. Yeah, that shop idea is a lot like Mars Matrix. Game is not as brutally tough as that one, though. :lol

Oh yeah: Neo Geo pad was a no-go. It showed up and I mapped the buttons but I could not shoot and move at the same time...it one or the other. Maybe I need to change a setting or something.

So apparently 5pb is considering the possibility of making Bullet Soul region free. Some more info here: http://njiska.com/2011/01/another-possible-region-free-candidate-bullet-soul/

E-mails can be sent here: http://5pb.jp/games/mailfoam/contact_public.html

I put in an e-mail and they replied that they are discussing the matter. So put in those e-mails if you want it to be region free!

Any update on this? I saw NCSX put up a post about the pre-orders for this today.

New Strania trailer and DLC info. Coming in Spring for 800MS Points. Bargain!

Strania has two sides at war the Strania army and Vower army. In the Xbox Live Arcade game you lead the Strania forces to victory. As a neat twist, G. Rev has downloadable content planned which has players switch sides and play through the game from the Vower perspective. Release date and pricing information for the pack have not been announced.

Also of interest to those of us in this thread, Pink Sweets/MMP got a 6/6/6/6 in Famitsu.

Gosh, that is five shooters in a two week period.

Wonder what happened to Trouble Witches.

Eschatos, Otomedius X, Strania and what are the other two?

And yeah, growing slightly concerned about Trouble Witches too :/

I went with Play-Asia because I had a coupon or some shit. See you in a month :(

Should have done NCSX but I'm a cheapass.

I actually preordered through amiami for the first time ever, just because they offered a great price on the LE and the game plus EMS shipping will still be cheaper than going with NCSX or P-A, even before shipping from one of them.

Amiami is awesome. I have ordered figures from them in the past. I hear they're pretty good about preorder bonuses when it comes to games too. I should have ordered through them now that I think about it.
