Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I'm pretty excited for it. The gameplay looks interesting (based on the trailer), and I really like the theme, setting, art, and music. So for $10 it's a no-brainer.

Yeah the music sounds really nice. There's not a lot of hype for this game which worries me a bit, seems like it won't be a massive hit, but we'll see. It's interesting that they are already working on a large DLC expansion too.

Strania is super fun, but be warned it is definitely on the hard side.

Still I'm up for the challenge. So much fun so far!!

Anybody down to make a thread? I will if no one else claims it by tomorrow.

I bumped the old one a few minutes ago with some impressions but don't let that put you off doing an OT! It would be great to see one for this game.

G. Rev gets a lot of credit for Border Down and Under Defeat but I literally just got Deathsmiles from the Aksys sale so this might have to wait a minute.

Think I'm going to combine it with Mamoru-kun PS3 release.

LE is so clutch this time.

Art book is 160 pages! Downloadable costumes!

<3 GRev!

According to Maruyama's twitter tonight it seems they have another announcement for tomorrow as well.

Edit: The End, Deathsmiles is awesome. Lots of fun to be had, but def pick up Strania when you have time for it. 800 MSP is too cheap for this game!

Played a bit of Strania last night - I didn't realize it was being released outside of Japan already, was a pleasant surprise to find it in the store. The game is great - haven't played much yet, but initially it seems like a bit of a mix of Radiant Silvergun and Musha. Great game so far.

Eschatos will be released April 7th according to the official site: http://eschatos.qute.jp/

Pretty crazy Bullet Soul and Eschatos are being released the same day! It's gonna be one expensive week.

Also here's a preview of the OST of Eschatos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKTuD6OiTTE Sounding pretty good. So old-school.

Heh I was just wondering when it would be released earlier. I have had it preordered and paid for about a month so just waiting on it shipping. Of course, I preordered Bullet Soul earlier today so that's going to be a nice shmup package when it arrives :)

And yeah, that OST sounds amazing!

Not shmup related, but Alfa System are doing some new PSP remake of an old PSX RPG.

God I wish they'd put Shikigami 1-3 on the PSP.

At least Shikigami 2.

First the 3DS, now this? My wallet just can't catch a break! Super excited about Bullet Soul since I'm a huge fan of Super Star Soldier.

And that Eschatos OST preview put a smile on my face. I've had the YouTube video on loop for the past hour. :)

Hopefully that Bullet Soul demo is out soon, I'm eager to try it. I'm gonna wait for impressions on both games though, since I'll probably get one of them for my birthday on the 22nd.

Just had my Playasia shipping confirmation for Eschatos and Bullet Soul!

Having them sent to a friend in HK to be sent on to me, so hopefully I should have them in a week or so :)

Been gone a month buy it looks like most of these shooters shipped from NCSX. Should be fun. Want some impressions of Eschatos from folks who bought it.

Been playing a lot of Cotton 2 recently. I wasn't too big on it at first because of the command shots and the confusing mechanics, but once you figure it out it's wonderful, especially using the option code to map command shots to the extra buttons on the pad. Chaining using sealed enemies makes the game feel so unique. I suppose I'll have to find a copy of Boomerang now. :P

I've been tempted to make a series appreciation thread but I doubt it would get much attention. :)

Got my copies of both Bullet Soul and Eschatos yesterday, played a bit of both last night.

I'm enjoying both of them. I really like how each stage of Eschatos rolls into the next without stopping (though I do get a minor loading hitch every few stages). I'm also digging the shield mechanic and appreciate the "wide+focus" option of triggering it instead of just a button like in the Wonderswan games. Speaking of, the Wonderswan games are pretty awesome too and have some great music. I think I prefer Judgement Silversword over Cardinal Sin.

Bullet Souls is pretty graphically and I think the "bullet souls" are a neat idea. I also really like the presentation of the game. However, I will say that the game treats achievements like they're diseased though; I earned over a dozen on my first play. Does anyone know if the color of the enemy bullets affects anything? I didn't notice any difference.

The demo for Touhou 13 - Ten Desires, is out.

I'm liking it so far, even if I'd prefer it to be a bit harder. There's four playable characters. Reimu, Marissa, and Sanae all feel pretty similar. Youmu is kinda weird but that's to be expected. It has a hyper system of sorts but it isn't too flashy. The hypers kinda remind me of a border from Perfect Cherry Blossom except you control when it activates. Still trying to figure out the scoring system so far, but the game is a lot of fun.

I was about to bail on both Eschatos and Bullet Soul due to many reasons, mostly the fact that I've had no time to put into any recent STG release and I've grabbed them all so far... Felt a bit shit about that, but i decided to still get Eschatos, Bullet Soul has gotta wait.

Really looking forward to it.

Put a bit of time into Eschatos earlier.

- The music is absolutely amazing. Fantastically old-school.
- Nice and simple to pick up and play. You have a straight shot, wide shot, shield and can change the speed of your ship.
- There's a really nice flow to the game. Not a lot of down time between each area.
- Did I mention how good the music is?

Had a quick go at Judgement Silversword too and, having never played it before, it's nice to see what Eschatos evolved from. Really nice graphics too.

I find Bullet Soul pretty enjoyable. It doesn't have the deepest scoring system out there, but the game is a pretty nice survival title. The presentation in this game is just gorgeous. I also enjoy the cheesy guitarriffs, reminds me of old cheesy times.

Eschatos is a really great package as well. Lots of stuff to check out and lots of unlockables too. The soundtrack is sublime.

Yeah, really happy with my april purchases. Must haves for any shmup fans collection in my opinion.

What about new Otomedius?! I kid.

But yeah, those two shooters are really great. Nice, nice additions to the 360 shooter catalog. I love the perpetual play time record combined with unlockables in the Eschatos/JS/CS set...wish all shooters did that. Nice break from all the Cave madness from the last year.

XBLA on fire recently and in the coming few weeks as well. So many titles.

Yeah tell me about. With Bangai-O, Nin² Jump and Radiant Silvergun coming it is gonna be an awesome year (again). Wish I had more time to play all these games, this is just crazy.

Trouble Witches is coming as well. Not too exciting but I've got my points ready for it, the Ninja game and Bangai-O.

Really waiting for the RS upgrade. Hoping it comes sooner rather than later. Pretty much gonna be a virgin playthrough for me as I shelved the Saturn version once the XBLA title was announced.

Yeah that one has kinda disappeared off my radar :/ I enjoyed the first one but there are just too many other shooters coming out to give it priority. I'll probably just wait for a budget release or a region free US release if it's cheap.

Yup, that's my preferred method too. I'd rather play for a while and learn the levels, gradually unlocking more lives/continues than having infinite from the start. Unless it's Pink Sweets/MMP. They were just rock hard :P

Gotta pick up my points later in the week for Bangai-O and Trouble Witches :)

Same with me, never played it before and really excited that I'll finally be able to do so without having to spend the guts of £100 :P

I'm betting it'll be one of the Summer of Arcade releases. Hopefully no later than that.

I'll definitely buy it. The chaining/leveling up is a huge misstep that prevents the game from being great, but maybe the revamped mode will be.

Picked up Eschatos.

Pretty fun so far though I don't like how much of a memorizer the game is.

The game torments you by upping the multiplier on harder difficulties, making it so tempting to get better at the hardest versions...Plus you can use your shield to turn bullets into point items.

Cardinal Sins and Judgment Silversword are both fun, but I seriously wish they had Tate mode...

Looking through the xbla catalog waiting for Portal 2 and MK to come out tomorrow, and completely forgot Raystorm HD came out. Demo was a little boring, and yikes it's $15. Anyone have it and think it's worth it? I still have the PSone import somewhere but no stick for the system. Wish my Eschatos/Bullet Soul ncsx order would ship so I can forget about Raystorm again.

I bought it at full price when it came out. Probably not worth it for that amount unless you're a huge Raystorm fan. It's a nice enough shmup though but make sure you really like the original before buying.

Any SHMUPS on PSP?

I can only think of:

-Gradius/Parodius/Salamander Collections
-There was a Star Soldier game I think

Anything else?

I'm surprised there isn't much, considering it's a very j-centric platform.

The Star Soldier game is great cause it is tate...but only tate so it takes a few rounds to get used to the controls.

There is also the Konami Twinbee collection.

Also, there is the King of Fighters shooter...has more modes than the XBLA version but suffers a little bit on framerate. The Cho Aniki game is up...kinda a remake and made it to the US PSN store for cheap. Taito has Darius Burst. The capcom collections feature many shooter arcade ports and the SNK collection has Last Resort. And, don't forget the many PS1 classics on J-PSN (about twenty titles, some bonafide classics), a few of which have been brought over to the US store. Additionally, a few PCE shooters are up for download (including Gate and Lord of Thunder). And Sapphire is available on a PC-Engine collection disc. Alpha Mission II has a great M2 port up on PSN, as well.

I used to really love shmups, perhaps mostly before they became known as shmups.

Bullet Hell leaves me cold. It took me a long time to realise this.
Also, thematically, shoot-em-ups have been pretty boring for a long time. Parodius and Salamander remain my favourites in terms of locations, and Ikaruga for art direction.

Radiant Silvergun is one of my favourites, but I'm not good at it. I find it too hard to manage all of the weapons effectively. I prefer it to the predetermined solution very apparent within Ikaruga.

I'm a game developer, and I often consider making a shmup for fun, but often fall down in terms of lacking inspiration, and not wanting to do anything with a space or 'vector' visual theme. It's only a matter of time until I crack and make one, even if it is a dodge-em-up (possibly with auto-fire).

The last shmup I had a lot of fun with, weirdly, is Space Invaders Extreme on DS. I prefer it to Infinity Gene, although this is good too.
