Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

DotEmu and SNK Play more Just put out Blazing Star on iOS and Android. I'm not too thrilled with having to constantly tap the "A button," while sliding my thumb around to steer the ship. There also seems to be slight lag when moving, similar to Taito's Layer Section. Also, trying to edit text on a Nexus 7 really sucks.
Blazing star supports the iCade too which works great. I can't imagine playing it with touch controls.

Also DotEmu/SNK also stated they are going to give an update for auto-fire.

Have not bought the iOS version yet but thinking I'll get it tonight.

adverse,

Is it worth slogging through Instant Brain via EOJ's explicit guide for non-japanese speakers to unlock Dodonpachi?

I would recommend just picking up Blazing Star. Easily one of the best (if not the best) non-CAVE iOS shoot em' ups. Even with the required tapping mechanic it's fantastic. After the patch it will be even better.

Haha, no unfortunately. Even if you skip all the events and whatnot it would probably take you at least 10 hours. Decent port but no tate screen option, so playing on Saturn is probably better.

If you speak Japanese, then I would recommend it since you get some raunchy big-boob anime girl pictures and a pretty good adventure game story, but otherwise it'll just be a slog.

Guess it will forever stay locked away. I did go through the first twenty minutes but it was taking a loonnngggh time just guessing at what was being said.

Just found out about this thread and its been a busy year for me with shmups.

I was always a longstanding Mobile Light Force/Castle Shikigami fan, but recently this year I got drawn into the genre deeper after I beat Jamestown and realized how much I really loved this genre that I had been neglecting. Knowing this and given the price of a lot of shmups these days I now have the following

  • Gradius Collection (1,2,3,4, gaiden)-psp
  • Super Fantasy Zone- Virtual Console
  • Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (Fantasy Zone, Zaxxon)- Xbox 360
  • Taito Legends 1 (Tokio, Exzisus)-Xbox
  • Taito Legends 2 (darius gaiden,Gekirindan, Grid Seeker: Project Storm Hammer, gun frontier, insector x, KiKi KaiKai, Metal Black, G Darious, Raystorm, syvalion )-PS2
  • Mobile Light Force-psx
  • Mobile Light Force 2-ps2
  • Castle Shikigami 2- ps2
  • Castle Shikigami 3-Wii
  • Shoot 1-up -Wii Virtual Console
  • Jamestown-PC (steam)
  • Razor2: Hidden Skies-PC (steam)
  • GundeadliGNE-PC (steam)
  • Gundemonium Recollection-PC (steam)
  • Hitogata Happa-PC (steam)
  • eXceed Gun Bullet Children- PC (steam)
  • eXceed Vampire REX-PC (steam)
  • eXceed Jade Penetrate Black Package-PC (steam)
  • Ikaruga-Gamecube
  • Raiden III - ps2
  • Raiden IV-Xbox 360
  • Raiden Fighter Aces (Raiden Fighter, Raiden Fighter 2, Raiden Fighter Jet)- Xbox 360
  • R Type Final-ps2
  • Ultimate Shooting Collection (Radirgy, Chaos Field, Karous)-Wii
  • Deathsmiles-Xbox 360
  • Dodonpachi Resurrection-Xbox 360
  • Akai Katana-Xbox 360
  • Eden's Aegis-PC
  • Blue Wish Resurrection-PC
  • Touhou Great Fairy War-PC
  • Touhou Shoot the Bullet-PC

and I'm still trying to find a copy of Gradius V for the ps2 lol. I'm completely addicted

Out of all of these I dabble in most, but really play a lot of Eden's Aegis, Akai Katana, Deathsmiles, Raiden Fighter Aces (jet!) and of course Castle Shikigami 2. I'd play more, but college kills my free time. Its why I got so heavy into the genre as I can pickup, play 30 minutes and go back to work having achieved a lot more fulfillment from one of these shmups than I generally could most other genre's in that small amount of play time.

So whip em out Gaf. Post your collections and chat about your favorite stuff in each game.

I started collecting the genre about four years ago. It is finite, but tons and tons of stuff out there, and the occassional new release every few months, which is nice. The last time I played a shooter before that was probably Axelay and Gate of Thunder in the early nineties. It was my favorite genre during the 16-bit gen. But I missed everything from 1995-2007, so no real history with PSX/PS2/Saturn/DC/etc. Been slowly picking up titles here and there, maybe have about 100 or so. Most I've not played yet or even tried. Mainly stick to my favorites which get good rotation: Gradius Rebirth Wii, Mushi Futari, Donpachi PSX, Espgaluda II BL 360, Raiden Fighters Aces (favorite shooter release ever), and more recently Mushihimesama.

Working on completing my full Saturn shooter collection, about 20 more titles to go. Starting a PCE Hu collection next. Got a few neat games already on Hu (some old favorites and some new titles). Gonna 100% that collection over the next few year as well.

My man. I picked it up super cheap for $5 locally and was amazed at how awesome it was. Its what got me to buy up Raiden III, and Raiden IV.

I like using the Stingray (great spread in all its formations) and hate using the Dragon the most (low spread slower fire) . What are your go to ships?

First shooter that really hooked me bad was Thunder Force 3 - Rtype (SMS) and Thunderforce 2 (Genesis) got a ton of replay before that, but TF3 was an addiction - which led me to buy virtually every shooter on the platform way back then.

Played a lot of Saturn shooters as well, mainly imports, but by the time DC/PS2 era kicked in, I sold my collections and moved on. (everybody makes mistakes)

I think about the time Mushi Futari came out on X360, my love for the genre kicked back in. I own all the region free X360 shooter titles, as well as all the US domestic releases - including all the XBLA stuff (sans all the indy games of course).

On top of that, I'm collecting arcade PCBs:
See my arcade collection here

And now, like Yes Boss!, I'm getting back into the Saturn scene with a recently aquired US/JP modded Saturn.

The moral of this story: it's a slippery slope my friend - welcome to the party! :)

So I noticed that the 360 has this cheap little shmup called "Shoot 1up"

Anyone played this?

It's good - worth a look. For something different in the genre, check out Guwange (Cave) on XBLA, I think it's fairly cheap right now.

Oh, and high five on Super Fantasy Zone listing out in your collection. GREAT game that rarely gets any mention!

Hurray! Another Fantasy Zone fan. I absolutely fell in love with that game. I played Phantasy Star IV as a kid and there was a silly little dancing girl scene with a bouncy song called "pao pao" playing in the background. Years later I discovered it was a cover of the Fantasy Zone theme song when I got the game unlocked in the Genesis Collection I bought. It blew my mind and I further discovered "pao pao" was an anagram for the ship's name "Opa Opa".

Since that day I gleefully played through this adorable shooter about a cuddly space ship with wings and little feets. So adorable! Game is flooded with character and fun. Its a stage that repeat scrolls and you have to destroy all the monster generators to face the boss. Most seem to speed run and just blast to the generators but if you chill out and fight as many enemies as you can that are spawned by the generators before going in on a boss you can get a better score than you would if you just went for a time bonus.

Fun and cuddlies all around from this series. Opa Opa is my main in Sonic All Star Racing for this reason.

Axelay
Ikaruga
Cybernator
Metal Slug series
Every game made by Treasure

Sad,

I did double dip on a few of the NGS titles to play on the Vita (Magician Lord and the Slugs), despite having them on VC.

At least we started getting M2 versions of Sega stuff on the other systems with Sega Ages ports. Have a feeling those are limited too.

Kinda quiet on the shooter front lately.

Maybe the DotEmu Raiden iOS packs.

Hopefully they play well, not expecting Cave quality though.

New gen can't start soon enough. Wondering if/when/what system will become the shooter system. Hopefully one will, otherwise I'll just lurk in the older systems.

Thinking Kokuga will be a one-off like the Ketsui DS game.

Reminder!

Blazing Star goes up on the Japanese VC store later today (japan date).
Oh very nice!
With a little luck we'll get these in Europe as well one day.

NGS was DoA. Did we even get anything past the initial launch? All I got was ASO II and Shock Troopers. Shame, those were presented so greatly by M2 and we could use all the cool new sticks >:(

Well I have two of these beauties, so hopefully the VC releases keep coming.

Still hoping for Puzzle de Pon R one day...

I'm a little bummed it's only coming for PS3, but I'll buy it day one anyway. Just gonna have to get my Seimetsu stick dual modded sooner.

Did anyone see this?

http://gematsu.com/2012/08/under-defeat-hd-set-for-north-american-ps3-release

So happy. Between this and Sine Mora, I'll be getting some sweet, sweet HD shmup action on my PS3. I hope eventually Under Defeat gets ported to Vita like Sine Mora is.

39.99 for a game from 2005?

Seems steep for a digital release, not HORRIBLE for retail but not great.

Sine Mora for vita will be mine , and i will cave and buy under defeat retail , its a great game and i played it a lot on dreamcast.

My Shmup collection has been building for 360 this year.

I have :
XBLA:
Radiant Silvergun
Triggerheart excelica
Ikaruga
Deathsmiles 2

Retail :
Akai Katana
Mushihimesama futari ver 1.5
Dodonpachi Resurrection
Raiden 4
Raiden Fighters Aces
Otemedius Excellent - this game is fuckin whacky , i got it for 10$ on an amazon sale and its...weird but has so many weapons its just...some are awesome some are useless...worth it for 10 bucks.
Deathsmiles

Ps2 i have Gradius V still and a 60gb ps3 so i can actually play it , great game but FUCK i suck at horizontal shooters (Altho i am really good at mushihimesama etc , no idea why it makes such a big difference for me)
On a related note , i kicked ass at only one horizontal shooter - PROGEAR , and AKAI KATANA is pretty much the same so im good at that too. (I really love akai)

I beleive that is all.

Still waiting to find espgaluda region free decently cheap if that ever happens (Cheapest i can find is about 60$ for the plat one on ebay shipped)
I know its on amazon.com , but they dont ship that shit to canada unfortunately.

You guys know that this is not the Dreamcast version that will be released, right? $39.99 is the same price as Akai Katana was when it was released. I don't really see the problem here.

So glad I waited on importing Under Defeat. I'll probably wind up buying it on PSN full price and later getting the disc release when it drops to $20 or so. I love disc releases for STG games, but realistically speaking a digital download is ideal because of the massive replaying to be done. I'll just never open the retail copy. :P

I've already got the DC Under Defeat, but my Dreamcast is rarely hooked up now, so I'm excited for the PS3 release. I just wasn't going to double dip for import prices - $100+ now, so this is great news indeed. Is there a release date yet? I can't find it for pre-order anywhere.

Haha, so much for Neo Geo Station.

What annoys me is that SNK is still releasing Playstation minis for their pre-Neo Geo stuff, but NGS? Nope.

All I bought was Shock Troopers 1. It was worth it but damn, way too much good stuff is getting ignored(I might actually start giving a crap about Sengoku 3 if it got an NGS release).

Well, they don't have much more pre-Neo games to be ported (bought Prehistoric Isle, Bermuda Triangle, Street Smarts, Guevara and Crime Wars, all good). So, maybe then they will continue releasing some more NGS games. At the moment, all stores (except the US store, figures) are having a NGS sale.

Well, look on the bright side. After the dollar to yen exchange rate and processing fees from a site like Play Asia, you will probably end up paying less than if you were to track down a disc only copy of Einhander.

The real question is, "did they put the Japanese or international version up for sale on JP PSN?"

All it will take for me to jump in and buy every single Neo Geo game on PSN is a half-off sale. I really wish they'd do it.

And all I want is to half-off on the PSP games. I really want to buy NeoGeo Heroes and Metal Slug XX, but my psychological price limit for PSP games is only 15 bucks.

Just a Heads up. There will be a SNK sale next week, confirmed by the PS Blog. NGS confirmed, maybe minis and PSP games also.

Not sure why, but I went on a PS2 purchasing spree this weekend.

Got copies of R-Type Final, XII Stag, and Psyvariar Complete on the way.
Should give Gradius V some much needed company on the PS2 shelf.

Not so much a shooter as a run and gun, but I bought the Metal Slug Anthology on Wii this weekend. Why does it not have Classic Controller support?!

I adapted to the Wii Remote quickly at least...
