Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

went on a PCB after I attended the Chicago Shmups meet. never owned a PCB before, but I bought a supergun, pcb feet, neo-geo arcade stick, composite cables, and great mahou daisakusen (dimahoo), armed police batrider - korean b version, and a cps2 conversion of progear no arashi.

pretty excited to get some arcade game going in my apartment :). I was extremely addicted to dimahoo and progear at the shmupsmeet.

Holy crap! What a haul. I'm not at the PCB buying level of crazy (yet), but when I get there I'll grab Batrider for sure. Since we all have Raizing on the brain, I decided to pick up Shippu Mahou Daisakusen Kingdom Grandprix for Saturn to fill out my collection a bit.

Honestly the part of my heart that's shaped like a wallet aches while reading this post.

as in you want 'em and couldn't justify it? or you feel bad that I spent money on 'em? I'm kind of over the cost as the majority of it is already paid off and I'm just super excited :). the only purchase with credit that could hurt was the dimahoo a+b board which will be taken care of next paycheck.

snagged batrider from shmups.system11, dimahoo from sophia, and progear from a proxy through Yahoo Auctions Japan. I bought one and then instantly wanted to buy all the ones I wanted. chose the conversion of progear because I wasn't ready to spend $400+ on it after dropping cash on the rest of the PCBs, but maybe I'll eventually sell it and get the legit version with the dumb suicide battery. worst case scenario, the boards will go bad.. but if they don't I can always sell them.

dangun feveron and battle bakraid are still sitting in the back of my mind, but I'll need to better justify those purchases with some time + 1 credit clears.

@BOTEC: kingdom grandprix is actually pretty fun - especially since it's such a unique title. I never really dug far into it but I only snagged it a few months ago. gameplay wise it's definitely a blast and you should probably enjoy just the "newness" feel to it.

...there are SHMUP meets?! man i wish i lived closer to these scenes
I went to one a few weeks ago, it was pretty cool. Some people from the Shmups forum but also some other arcade focused ones. The guy had like three cabs, someone brought two more, and there were a few PCs/consoles scattered around for more games.

Also saw some crazy play, some guy was trying to 2 loop clear Strikers 1999 while he was there (wouldn't be his first time though), and another 1CC'd Ghouls and Ghosts (but he's 1 life cleared it before) and later got Grand Master in Tetris: The Grand Master. Meanwhile I just tried to not embarrass myself at Ketsui (I got a respectable looking run in at least, if not particularly good in the score department) and played a few puzzle games against people.

And I got sold my DOJ board there, which then funded this thing which came today:

Which lets this happen with my 360:

Good lord it's so much better on there than on my TV and crappy stick...and 4:3 and tate support is just as bad as people have said. One interesting annoyance, while I had more or less gotten used to the ship hit box on my TV, I got all screwed up again when playing on the cab.

Posted this also on shmups.com:

Not sure if a lot of forum members here attended this year's E3 - but if you did, I hope you checked out LUFTRAUSER on the PS Vita... because it's fucking awesome.

The PS Vita had a TON of games at E3, all of which were fantastic, but I think Luftrauser left me the most impressed. I think I spent a half hour playing it the first time - checking out all the weapons, armor and perk combinations. Then was fixated on taking out the battleship in the demo level, which proved to be a good challenge.

All throughout the show, I kept stopping by to play it some more - the game had a great feel to it, and seeing how long you could last was part of the challenge. I tried finding the dev, but he always seemed to be missing from the game station.

REALLY looking forward to seeing this come out on Vita -

Some brief details:
- It controls like Asteroids - with directions mapped to the d-pad, and thrust mapped to the R trigger. The sense of gravity is perfect, and the control was spot on.

- Not firing for a while will repair your ship - the speed of your repairs depend on what kind of loadout you set up before starting the game.

- The aesthetic is great - sort of a lo-fi, monochromatic design sense going on - with some nice character designs used in the menus.

- Could not really comment on the sound - the headphones looked sort of ...wet, and as I much as I loved the game, I wasn't about to place those headphones on my ears.

- My only complaint was the way the menu controls - which was REALLY weird. Pressing up to launch the game (instead of hitting a button) seemed to throw a lot of people off. Not a big complaint, but worth mentioning.

In related news, apparently the dev's code was stolen at the hotel nearby to the convention center. Hopefully the thieves get hit by a bus and dragged to their deaths.

Anyone else get to play this at the show?

This is why I always carry my own headphones to show floors. Usually the people running the booths don't care if I unplug their headphones in favor of my own. If they do, I'm not playing their game, that simple.

So, every week I've been checking out one of my Saturn Shooter titles...even if it is for an hour or two. This weekend it was Kyukyoku Tiger Plus. Game, it turns out, is pretty bad. I could not stomach more than about ten minutes on it.

A new full-featured shmup has appeared on the J-eShop for 3DS! One all about chaining called Chain Blaster. From a company called G-Style (who does release on the NA eShop so expect this one to get brought over, I'm guessing).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KeTlSteZbU

I've been playing it for about an hour. Solid game. I'm still trying to figure it out. Basically you try to combo and keep your chain going in a non-scrolling Galaga type environment. It has three buttons, one for shot, one for another shot that consumes all enemies for a chain, and a third button to slow time.

It also has a full-blown leaderboard (about 500 folks on it now) and something like unlockables as your score keeps adding across games. I don't really know anything about it and there does not appear to be a thread on shmups either. It is $7 and production is very high quality...not your budget affair.

That video is evocative of a doujin game called Every Extend, which coincidentally had a homebrew port to the original DS with worldwide leaderboards, haha.

In that game instead of shooting you blow yourself up to initiate the chain reaction. The goal was to cause a big enough chain to ensure you get another extend because each "attack" costs a life.

Every Extend went on to have commercial sequels on PSP and XBLA, but I don't like them as much as the OG.

Ok, that makes sense. There is a lot going on with the game with bars and stuff. Seems like you can keep going as long as you extend or something (happens a lot).

I hated EEE on XBLA. Just so damn boring. I've heard the PSP UMD is better.

Oh snap! Yes Boss talking mess about a heli vert shooter? WE GOT BEEF NOW SON!

Maybe.

I'm not sure if that game is the game I'm thinking of, but if it is, WE GOT BEEF!

If this is that crazy heli shooting game that has all types of Z-axis shifting during levels i.e. where you're flying over a river, than zoom down too the water level, blast some gunboats out of the water, then zoom bask up to a normal altitude, that game was all types of crazy. I really liked the brief few minutes I played of it. And it was Toaplan's legacy game. It was the game that was under development as they crashed and burned.

I think that is the one. This reviewer calls it "a man's game."

Just very, very drab and ugly. And seems kind of cheap and hard. I don't remember what I paid for it but I'm not thinking more than about $50 years ago.

I'll be giving it a little more play this weekend prior to shelving it back into the collection.

Not too experienced with the Raiden series, but so far...Raiden IV beats the fighters collection out for me by soundtrack alone. Really dont know what they were thinking.

IV's OST is amazing, but RFJ is a better game and it's not even close.

Ok, so I've logged about five hours on Chain Blaster. I can give some more impressions.

First off, it is very good. You play one single loop with five levels per loop. So 1-1, 1-2 etc. Each loop gets progressively harder. I'd say the second loop is where it starts to get interesting with bullets and gameplay. The loops are a bit lengthy, probably taking about 15 minutes to go through. Currently I've made it to the third loop.

First loop is kinda your tutorial in the sense that it is easy to learn about the chaining and it is fairly easy to chain-all it. Chains don't carry over to the mid bosses (at the end of each sub-stage and can be one or two depending how you did).

The game is a bit more about restraint so you wind up not using the proper shot and only the chain shot going for the perfect placement. The chain meter drops fairly quickly so often you have to avoid shooting enemies as they first appear on the screen. You are constantly monitoring the chain meter. I'm starting to get the rhythm though and do not need to look at it so often.

There is also an overdrive button. This slows everything down so that you can navigate some tough spaces and not loose your chain. This is very handy on the big main boss (a spinning wheel with lasers a la Gradius V).

Your actual chain shot is replenished up to three levels via bubbles that appear when you clear a row of enemies. They bubble get sucked in by proximity. You essentially have three chain shots till you run dry but bubbles are constantly refilling it.

You can get hit as much as you want as long as you have at least one section of the Extend meter filled (maxes at three). You don't lose your chain by getting hit.

Graphics are good, with some decent 3D. I always play my 3DS games with 3D on. Music is your typical techno, with the boss music being the standout. It is just fun to take him out piece by piece as the music swells.

Leaderboards are very well-implemented. Currently about 650 people. I've made my way up to 120. Simple to check, just go online and upload your leaderboard and you can see the highest ten and then hit left trigger and you can see where you stand. The bottom screen also shows your top score, max chain, and cumulative chains for that run. Not sure how friends factor in as I don't have any on my J-3DS.

Also, worth noting is that there is an additional unlockable ship for "expert" play. This ship moves faster and has a brake mapped to the left trigger to slow down and presumably navigate through thick bullet patterns. It also forgoes the single shot button and just offers the chain shot. Overdrive is also included with the expert ship.

Oh yeah, lots of charming engrish. Things like "rank-in" and "chain break" are nice. It is a female voice.

Altogether a very good game, especially for the seven bucks. I'd highly recommend it when it come to NA or EU.

I kinda stopped reading after I noticed the taiko no tatsujin 3ds icon. :P

Miss the days when you could import Japanese games and play them on your American DS.

SWEET!

Chronoblast for XBLA's new Heaven Mode just had a vid put up. He's worked in a slowdown mechanic to the bullets.

New Heaven Mode Slow Down in action

New Heaven Mode looks absolutely stellar right now. Only a $1 folks. Go get the game and wait alongside me for the delicious update he's getting ready for it.

Yeah, it does kinda suck.

For what it is worth you can import an XL/LL now for sub $200. Really not a whole lot that is japanese exclusive...unless you can speak japanese and then there are a half-dozen RPGs. I got it for Kokuga (and only played a few hours) and threw on Taiko for something unique for the system. With 3DS making inroads in sales in the west I'm half expecting most things to get brought over. Don't think Taiko is going to make it.

IV's OST is amazing, but RFJ is a better game and it's not even close.

Yeah I have fun with RFJ, and after spending some more time with IV, it does feel like the better game. Its just I never thought i'd have to use a custom soundtrack with a shoot em up :P

How hard is it to buy stuff on the Japanese eShop here? I've had my Japanese 3DS since MAGFest but haven't looked into it yet...

Easy,

Connect to the eShop and input your debit/credit exactly like the NA shop. I don't speak japanese so I just keep my US store open to better navigate. It will ask you to initially save the card so there are few extra steps. But the "hai" button is easy enough. Also, make sure you pick the fund exact button if that is all you want to do.

Had something of a Touhou fest. Got halfway through Remilia in EoSD on a 1CC. Using Reimu no less! (I main Marisa typically.)
She's in my reach!

GUISE I need help!

I'm developing a 2D shooter with rhythm elements and I would like some feedback on it.

Here's our first trailer:

http://youtu.be/URLiLaweeio

The idea is simple: it works as a normal 2d shooter (you move the ship and destroy your enemies) but in order to get more powerful (as in, shooting more bullets of different speed/size at the same time) or to be able to use powerups you need to follow the beat of the song by tapping or pressing a key at the moment of a beat, so each time you complete a chain of successful beats (say, 4) you will level up and each several levels your basic power will increase, and at the same time the background music willl get complemented (The songs are separated in layers so we can add and remove them at will).

Well, OK maybe the idea is not so simple or I just suck at explaining so I will try to have a gameplay video sometime soon but feedback would be very welcome as it is the first time I'm developing a 2d shooter, and if I'm adding another element to the mix I would like to strike a balance between both things (shooting and leveling up with rhythm).

For more info I also posted about the game in the June Indie Thread:

Ha ha, maybe a bit hyperbolic, but not entirely untrue. I mean it's a Toaplan game, it will kick your ass. I wanted to grab a copy when I was on my Toaplan kick a few months ago, but the Saturn disc goes for $90-$110 on ebay.

Cheap, hard, and ugly? Sounds similar to the first Twin Cobra, then, or Tiger-Heli before it.

I like the visual style you're going for.

The rhythm mechanic seems interesting, but hard to manage. Is it related only to the music? So you're trying to keep track of two things at once? Or does enemy spawn relate to the music playing? Are you tapping to the tempo, or actual beats?

I've had a lot of fun with Radirgy Noa Massive. It's definitely something I like to play when I want to relax (though the later stages do get a bit difficult). Was it worth what I paid for it? Probably not... but I do enjoy it.

Is it much different from the first one? Nothing Milestone ever did clicked with me. I'm willing to give it a shot if they try something new, but if it's more of the same, no thanks.

Thanks, we're using different color palettes to have good variation with the same assets.

The tapping is associated directly to the tempo and it stays the same through the whole level, the level starts only with one music layer on and that's the one that indicates when the player has to tap.

I'm actually not sure if it is hard or not because as I'm developing the game I'm used to it already :) we will try to have a playable build soon to let other people try and give us feedback but I think it's not really hard, the tapping becomes mechanical after a short while because of the tempo and because you can let the music guide you instead of visual cues (and visually you will want to pay attention to the shooting part).

Aside from that, the tapping only relates to the ships power, the ability to use powerups and the adding of other music layers to the background track. Each four successful taps makes a chain, each chain you are able to use a powerup and each several chains you level up, adding more raw power to the ship and changing the color palette of that level. It does not relate to the level events or the enemies.

Sorry I ended up with a lengthy answer for this and I know it may be kind of hard to understand without a more detailed video or something, I'll try to get to that soon. As I said not everything is set in stone and if we can make changes for the better any feedback is appreciated, we'll post updates on our twitter to for anyone who's interested: http://twitter.com/missingdf

Just beat Omega Five. Not a 1CC, but still the game is pretty fun. Short, but has a really great, driving soundtrack, and the graphics are really nice and sharp. Things can get pretty hectic quickly, but i'd really have liked to see another game in the series. I've had the game on my 360 forever...just never really sat down to clear until now.

Funny part is that the final boss death scene looks exactly like Gunstarhero's avatar.

I just remembered Hudson was working on O5 for 3DS before they were acquired by Konami. I was looking forward to that, lol.

to be completely honest with you, I haven't played another milestone game. I've owned the ultimate shooting collection 2 for over a year, but still haven't even thrown the disc in my Wii.

I just enjoyed noa massive because it's something different than the usual cave/raizing games that I'm used to play. I'd imagine it's very similar to their past titles.

Well, Radirgy and beyond are a bit better than Chaos Field because they actually have levels and not just boss fights, but yeah, their stuff is all kind of mediocre.
