Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I thought those Mii Street Plaza games were just shovelware crap, might look into those.

Nah, the are full-fledged games...by different development houses...Prope, Good Feel, etc. the are about as big or bigger as the two Mii Quest games combined.

I have played a little of the other three but they take a good ten minutes of management each, daily, so I'm just attacking the shmup first.

I logged about four hours on the first pass on Mii Force...playing some stages multiple times. Mii Force is perfectly playable with your daily walking 10 Coins.

I just been buying three options/life bars/mercenaries for six coins daily. You also get two daily in-stage restarts if you die...so if you miss one if your specific in-stage goals then you can suicide early to start again, otherwise, once you finish the stage that is it till you rehire or get nee street-passes.

Hah, promptly went in to buy Mii Force but I forgot I blew nearly all of my bonus $30 eShop on some other games, and now I´m a dollar short. Oh well, I´ll be in the US in a month or so and I´ll buy a card since the US eshop won´t take my Mexican card.

Since you have a good month I'd take twenty of those days and build up 200 coins so once you get it then you have a little buffer.

It was awesome having 180 coins on the system to run through the game entirely once (even with a lot of deaths). Now I'm set just going back a few minutes each morning once I get to work and tackling a stage. I usually don't keep walking coins on my system but had almost 200 coins just because I used to turn in on when I'd go through airports in Nuremberg/Amsterdam/San Fran/LAX in order to get some street passes from other countries.

Oh yeah, you can also hire folks from your Mii Plaza collection but they cost 3 coins each...but the extra coin is because you can choose the color shirt and weapon you get from them. I had fun just going in random and dealing with the weapons I was given.

Already at about 80 Play Coins or so since I've been taking my 3DS to work for Sakura Samurai, will be easily around 300 coins by then. Glad those games aren't half-assed efforts, read a bit more into them and they sound pretty fun.

Oh yeah, gotta get back to Sakura myself ;-(

Why would they be half-assed? Mii Quest and its sequel is some of the top gaming on 3DS. Not like Nintendo ever releases shovelware. Even a game like Wii Music was done with great effort and earnestness.

Oh hey, another Winnipegger!

I'm living in Vancouver now so I'm hoping stuff gets here faster, since this is where things from Japan land anyway. I ordered late so it only left Japan recently.

Make it a third.

And yeah, in MUCH the same way, my Ketsui isn't here yet either!

If it's not here by Wednesday I'll start getting worried.

I'm really enjoying Under Defeat HD.. dat soundtrack. Almost as rocking as Eschatos' music. I just wish there wasn't so much slow down and chug...

Are there any good twin stick shooters out there? I'm not talking Geometry Wars, I mean modern versions of Forgotten Worlds where you actually go through different vertical or horizontal scrolling levels and fight bosses with characters or ships?

Speaking of Omega Five, I loaded it up the other day to find that my save progress has been erased. All unlockables are gone. Is this a known issue with the game?

I don´t know man, I just got that vibe from first looking at them. Glad to be wrong about it though!

Guwange has a twinstick mode where you can control your characters shikigami with the right stick. Makes the game a bit more accessible I think.

Mind blown, right now. I'm gonna try this out, thanks.

I hope the lack of twin stick shooters (the kind I'm describing) doesn't mean that people don't like or want them. I would love to see more of them out there.

Well, the lack is likely since most shooters are designed around current arcade controls...and the two-stick controls like Berzerk simply don't exist anymore.

The twin-stick games that have surfaced, like Omega and Guwange 360 Mode, are designed for a two-stick controller from the ground up.

Really? I ended up getting it 2 days after the screw-up. Already beat both arcade and EX mode.

Using a shitton of continues. :S

Mamorukun Curse (which just got an NA PS3 release) has a twin-stick mode. I've heard it's good, too.

I'm not feeling Mii Force. It seems like a solid concept only if you can get 10 Street Pass Miis at a time. The game is actually unnecessarily challenging with only one or two pods attached. There should have been at least a default peashooter, and the pods should be add-on weapons. I was having trouble with a level, so I spent some coins to hire a bunch of cats, and breezed through it. That felt underwhelming. I didn't get any better, I just paid to win.

Hire three cats for 6 coins a go. They all go up front. No more as it is a waste. So long as you don't get hit in the first few seconds the second and third will act as life-lines.

It is hard with one but an awesome challenge...especially if you go in random. Harpoon gun only, shark gun only, etc. It also helps you to learn each weapons unique abilities and counters against certain enemies.

It is risk reward. You only get so many Streetpass friends (at least in NA) that it does a good job of really putting on the stress to perform. The IGN review does a fantastic job to equating it to the old arcade experience where you only have so many quarters.

Loading up on characters and options of course is going to kill the game...but continuing in arcade games also kills those games. It is about restraint and performing.

I guarantee that if you give the game some decent time each day with what you are given (ten walking coins, etc) then you will be singing its praises. I currently get about thirty minutes of play out of my 10 coins each day. I'll be playing it for months.

Definitely in my ranking for top five games released this year, so far.

Just Checked prices of Recca on ebay for my Fami...

I don't have a 3DS. :( I did just set up my retro gaming room..but man..I would love a WiiU port so I can play on my brand new 50' Sony Bravia instead of my CRT+NES combo.

I frequently get 10 passes a day, and I actually find it's better NOT to have that many. With a ship that powered up, I end up with bullets going everywhere and its harder to track what's going on. I think it plays much better with less.

That being said, it's not my favorite of the Mii Plaza games. I do love the presentation though
and was disappointed that a Gold Bone mask was not the reward for completing the game
.

lol, I wish I could be bothered to go through with that.

Would it be frowned upon to suggest buying it on eShop and then one way or another emulating it on a nice big screen? Maybe with an arcade stick?

I don't think anybody is even going to bat an eye if you don't buy it on the eShop and then just emulate it on a nice big screen (perhaps with an arcade stick).

Pretty sure that is how most everybody has played it till now.

I started playing Nanostray 2 the ohter day. For a DS shmup is very impressive. However, I'm not liking the horizontal levels, they feel way too cheap because I keep dying to enviro hazards. :S
