Shooter with AR-15 at Houston's Bush Airport (suicide, no other deaths)

Well, I assume he did not go through the security yet.

I don't understand the motive . . . he shows up to an airport, shoots some rounds in the air, and then kills himself?

Maybe he was trying to suicide by cop but for whatever reason it didn't work out that way.

Then again, maybe he was just batshit insane.

That airport is the most cavernous airport I've ever been in.

Also, crickets were everywhere.
It really is. My first time there it felt like I had stepped off the aircraft and 40 years into the past. Almost surreal and not at all what I was expecting.

Are these things just daily now?
They've been daily. They're just getting reported more now.

Your reaction made me laugh but I know I shouldn't. Shit is really getting out of hand. How the fuck can congress not pass a gun control bill. Fuck them.

Fuck anyone who is against gun control. I am serious. Fuck you and your bullshit morals. Fuck you.

I'm sick of seeing this bullshit. Fuck you.

The guy wanted to commit suicide in a public fashion. He was mentally unstable enough to want to do something like that. What type of control do you think combats against that?

It's easily the most ghetto airport I've been to. Not to mention it's horribly laid out and just plain confusing.

They seem content to just leave it as a commuter hub though. Not a single flight leaves between like 10pm and 7am.

You clearly have never flown through Newark.

Saw an ad for a documentary on CNBC, "AR15: America's Gun".

This could be an edgy new marketing strategy, guys.

Mandatory psych evaluations every few years to renew your permit.

But if regulation doesn't solve every incident of gun violence in America, what's the point, right? What's the point of regulating anything?

What would gun control have done here? Chances are it was legally bought. He killed himself in a public place. This could be done with any gun at any time.

We should be thankful at the very least he didnt take anyone with him.
This defeatist attitude won't get us anywhere.

As a Houstonian our airport is really ugly and mediocre. :( But I guess that's not what this is about.

Glad there are no victims other than the apparent shooter. Wonder why he shot in the air instead of at people...

Despite the economy booming, Texas mentality is fuck infrastructure.

It's really a shame because things could really become amazing down here, but nope..

Oh I don't know. If only it were possible to have something where we could "check" someone's past and mental stability, their "background" if you will. Sadly it's only 2013 and such technology is far beyond us.

Bush Intercontinental? I mean, it's not the best in the world or anywhere near that but ghetto isn't a word I would use to describe it.

I think (hope) he means it's just dirty and run down.

LAX is also on my shit list. I could probably do a whole thread on GungHo's shittiest airport experiences. Domestic and international.

Are you looking to get me to agree with your sarcasm? Because I've never suggested that at all. Like ever. Unfortunately we don't have the means to predict what another human will do. We're notoriously unpredictable. I do want increased regulations and standard background checks. But I'm not sure I agree with forcing people to undergo mental evaluations that otherwise have not demonstrated a requirement for one. Now, if it turns out this guy had a history of documented mental issues, then of course that needs to be addressed.

And I believe AR-15/AKs account for roughly 2% of gun incidents/crimes in the US. They're popular but they're not really the go to weapon for everyday crime.

Probably got frustrated because the air marshal couldn't hit a stationary target.
Pistols are very inaccurate weapons in a quick-shoot situation past even just 20 feet. That's what makes ARs so much more deadly, they're much more accurate at distance because of the long barrel and the holding stability.

It has a pistol grip therefore it is so much more lethal than other guns obviously.

I did expect you to agree, yes. I apparently misread your stance.

I don't particularly care if gun owners are inconvenienced by a psych evaluation every now and again if it saves even one life. On a long enough timeline, it will.

All that tells you is we have way too much gun crime in the US. Think about every news story recently with an AR (Aurora, Sandy Hook, this one, and a few others) and then realize there were 49 other stories with no AR involved.

You've never been to an airport before, have you?

You pass security to get to the flight gates, not as you enter the airport itself
I hope this will cause them to rethink that. They need to implement security check points at the entrance or highway exits to the airport.

It has little to do with convenience but more forcing someone to undergo a psych evaluation with no prior reason to do so could very likely be a violation of their civil rights. But I'm not a law expert.

That would create a huge jam of traffic outside the airport which is already hella crowded. Would also make things a huge hassle for every little thing.

Most airports have cops outside as well either way. But having two gates of security at an airport?

When was the last time you drove to an airport?

Imagine if he didn't have a gun. He wouldn't have been able to take himself out...could have caused more damage.

No it says they are rarely ever used in crime. Both in percentage and actual number. There are millions of ARs out there.

This is a quick search, but out of a Washington DC CBS affiliate, the FBI reported in 2011 there was a total nationwide murder count of 363 from rifles in general. So that isn't the AR-15 alone, but all rifles combined including hunting rifles, AKs, etc.
