Should I get an iPOD or an iRIVER H320

From my experience, the iPod is very easy to use, especially with iTunes, the quality of sound is decent, and it serves it's purpose well. The only problem might be the low battery life, but that never seems to cause too much of a problem. I don't know much about the iRiver though.

the h3xx series will be orphaned pretty soon. if it's between those two go with the ipod. if you can though, the new irivers are hot.

Jeez, not this shit again.

What are you looking for in a HD-based portable device, Star Power? That'll make things a lot easier for the people that want to guide you one way or the other. If you don't know, start doing some research on tha intarwebs or something.

Why just have music when you can watch your TV / movies as well.

So far on mine:-

Total Recall
Star Wars Trilogy
Closer
Aliens
The Thing
War of the Worlds (George Pal)
Elf
Team America
Incredibles

3 Stargate Episodes
1 Alias Episode

10 audio books. (Dr Who, Stephen King ect)
12 albums

And all for same price as a Ipod Photo.

Pros and Cons of each?

iRiver: better sound, WMA support, the ability to record, you can hack it to use as a USB camera bridge thingamajig, drag-and-drop from Windows, color screen and pictures, limited movie support [10 fps, battery drain]

iPod: easy to use [i need to stress this. it's actually the usability that made me switch from the H120 to the iPod], easy to see information, smaller...... and i guess it's more of a fashion statement or whatever-the-fuck.

Screen is very watchable, everyones surprised when they see the quality of it. And it's small enough in your hand to watch on a bus or tube...let's face it, your never going to use a PSP on transport unless you fancy being mugged.

I watch Scrubs on the bus using my PSP, though I'm cautious when doing so. Half-emoty bus, behind a bag etc.

The real answer, of course, is that you should ideally see if you can spend some time with each and decide for yourself.

PSP will be damn common soon, plus you have the same chance of being mugged with the trademark iPod headphones.

How is the iPod Shuffle? I've been thinking of buying the 1gb model but i want to know if there's anything comparable to it at about the same price.

A screen or radio are not needed because i would never use them and i don't want to spend extra money for that.

if you are gonna listen to ALOT of music, i mean 5/6 hours a day, get the iriver (but i'm in favor of the older 100 series models, not these ugly 300 series devices), or you may want to wait for the sleek new iriver units.
or else get the ipod, it is pretty nice, easy to navigate, looks good.
get rid of the head phones though, you'll get beat up and mugged at tech the first day ;)

Same price as an iPod photo? Try same price as a normal 20GB iPod, in the UK anyway!

But yes, this man knows what he's talking about. I fucking love my GMini <3

Just use a phone. Watch divx, use cheaper memory, surf GAF and toast bread with your bluetooth toaster :p

It'd work out more expensive to buy 20GB worth of memory for a phone surely?

If you intend avoid HD's. There are phones with HD coming for this year.

Download iTunes and use it for a while, rating your songs and creating smart playlists. If this really appeals to you, then the iPod might be a good choice. I was always against the iPod because other mp3 players have better sound, battery life, features, etc. but it's iTunes and its ease of use that make it good. I'm probably getting a shuffle for everyday use (and use my HD player at home and on trips) but I wouldn't even consider it if it wasn't for the fact I recently tried iTunes.

Yup, it is the software that makes Ipod better then the competitors imho.

Apple should smarten up and start licensing out Itunes for other competitors eventually.

I don't get all the complaints about the sound though. Maybe I am just tone deaf but I really don't see where the complaints about Ipods sounds come from. I have played around with some other mp3 players and I never noticed that huge of a difference if any. Oh, sometimes I wish the Ipod had a remote with a screen too, but that is probably my only complaint with it and it not a big deal. Can't wait for a nice paid of bluetooth headphones to use with my Ipod though.

I owned an iPod before the H320 and immediately sold the iPod after buying the H320. There's just no comparison. I love the brilliant color screen, movie playback (watching music videos is excellent), recording features galore (it's a pirate's dream), built-in FM tuner, best audio clarity, 18 hour battery life, it goes on and on. I've shown people Naruto episodes on the H320 and have gotten 4 people to pick up one by selling their iPods on ebay. :lol

How's the navigation on the H320 for music? i've got this on my list of possible players, although the limited space is making me look at music-only players.

Navigation on my H320 is good enough. You can use a file tree, or you can set up a database using ID3 tag info so you can search by artist, album, or genre. But there's a caveat about using the database-it increases the boot time of the device considerably. When I first put on 15 gigs of music on my H320 and used just the file tree, the player would boot up in about 10 seconds. After setting up the database, it now takes about a full minute to boot-but I can search by file tree, artist, album, or genre.

BTW, while I do like my player tons, there are a few negatives about it:
-The player does NOT come with a remote or a dock: whilst a dock is hardly neccessary for the player, a remote would have been nice, especially an lcd remote. The player can use the H1XX series lcd remote (despite Iriver America's insistance otherwise), and there is an actual H3XX series lcd remote out in Korea now, but it would have been nice if it was included, since the face buttons on the player aren't exactly ergonomic.

-If you do the firmware upgrade to get video playback on a US unit, you permanently lose DRM functionality: hardly a deal-breaker for me, since I prefer to rip my music from a CD, but a heavy user of Napster 2.0 or MusicNow would have to take this into consideration. Also, DRM music has to be loaded onto the player using WMP and the USB 1.1 port of the player (even though the player has USB 2.0-go fig).

-The aforementioned increase in boot time when using the database: it's annoying, but I can adjust.

-You can't look at pictures on the player and play music at the same time, although you can listen to music if you are just using the text viewer.

-You can't build a playlist on the fly. You can use playlists built by winamp, though. I just usually put the player on shuffle all songs, anyhoo.

Ouch. Do you need to turn the player off often, or could you feasibly leave it on or in a sleep mode until the battery dies?

Well, you can adjust the power off times in the Timer options, but I like to conserve battery life, and I generally use the player with the AC adaptor anyway, so it doesn't power down often. My battery life seems pretty decent-about 13 hours or so.

Running off of Custom Firmware
I've got a 60gb iPod photo and it has many language options. I don't read Japanese, but there are 3 sets of oriental-style characters at the very bottom of the language list. I believe the bottom-most one is Japanese. (It lists language in those native languages.)

Oh, and I took this photo flying international a few weeks back. Both trips were 17 hours long, and though I won't claim to have listened to music non-stop, during neither trip did I actually run out of batteries. So Apple is finally on their way to making battery life a non-issue.

And the newest Korean firmware for the H3xx (1.27K) seems to give a good battery life boost, I got like 5 or 6 extra hours of playback in my H320.

Question for the Ipod people.

Can you change the language option say from English to Japanese?

There are different language options for the menu system, yes. I'm not sure if Japanese - specifically - is one of those choices.

I've changed my mind. I'm going to get an iPOD so I can do this to it:
