I think I know the answer to this, but it's nice to get the opinions of others. My PC currently has an Athlon XP 1700 (1.46Ghz) processor & 256MB oF PC2100 DDR RAM. I use it for surfing the net, running office apps, playing CDs & DVDs, and the basic manipulating of audio (wav & mp3) & video (jpg, bmp, etc.). Should I upgrade my PC? If so, to what extent? Thanks in advance.

You might benefit from more RAM, say 256 more.

But since you don't game or anything, the next step would be a processor upgrade. ie a new system basically.

from what you've mentioned, the most immediate upgrade would be RAM. get at least another 256 stick, though a 512 stick of DDR can frequently be found for 40-45 including shipping at newegg.com

it also depends what you want to upgrade to. i recently made a mini-atx computer for my mom for ~$300 dollars that consisted of a athlon 2000, mini-atx motherboard w/built in sound, 512 megs of DDR, DVD burner, 40 gig HD, radeon 9200 and a snazzy small case and fancy schmancy heatsink. runs the inteweb, office and the occassional game of bejeweled great.
