Show us your gaming setup: 2014 Edition

I'm kind of embarrassed to post mine with seeing some of the incredible stuff in here, but SOMEBODY with a humble setup has got to post, right? (lol) This is in a fairly small bedroom. It's too loud in the living room to put my gaming stuff there so I just put my all into this, and honestly I'm pretty proud of it. It's a mishmash of styles but I can't really afford anything incredibly cohesive at the moment. I usually sit on my office chair whether I'm on my PC or playing games on the TV because I basically just have to turn my chair one way or another, but I do have a bed on the opposite side of the room as the TV, so I'll sit or lay there sometimes, too.

Nothing to embarrassed about. I like it. I have the exact same keyboard I use for my HTPC.

Here's my ever-evolving setup.. Let me know if you like it!

Cell phone photos are all I got right now, sorry-

I would want one.

That Minecraft creeper and the Portal Turret are fantastic... makes that place really special.
I really appreciate that, I tried to make a "clean" game room, but still give it character.

That Nurburgring outline is sick. Where did you get it?
I actually worked with a good friend that works at a machine shop to make it for me. If you're interested I can get one sent your way :D

Temporary setup.
Controlled Lighting with 15" Laptop as perspective

Lights on:

I'm selling my old TV and using the cash to buy a screen for this bad boy. Will post better shots and full details in the coming days. This is only 87". I'm buying a 100" screen.

Good man!

I have a 100 incher and fucking love it!

Heres my pic again for reference....

Question what is the distance you have from your projector to your screen?

True story: I winged the whole setup.

Wife and I estimated where we could hang a 100 inch screen. We leveled it by eye when it arrived.

Then I put the bracket on the projector and kept walking the projector back along the ceiling until it filled the screen. Then I market it and was set to drill.

My wife said "what if there's no beam?"

"Only one way to find out! " I said "fuck it" an drilled carelessly into the ceiling and there just so happened to be a beam there on the first hole. So our joke is that we were meant to have a 100 in TV.

I still look at my set up in awe of how well our flat fit for this setup.

I have 10 foot ceilings (I think) and if I were to guess, the projectors about 15 feet back.

I fucking love this thing. Plus I can roll up the screen when it's not in use and my flat has a nice clean look.

In bed now. I'll measure for you tommorow, cool?

I also own a projector but I need to do something about it, because right now it's just sitting on top of an IKEA shelf and if I walk in front of it I obviously cover the whole image. But because I don't own the house and we might be moving in a few months, I don't feel like doing anything... :/ I also don't own a screen yet so I'm projecting the image into my wall (white flat wall, it has tiny bumps but when looking from far away you can't see them).

Can't wait to move into a house where I know I'll stay for at least 10 years or so, so I can make it look nicer :)

Only plans are to add a much better and bigger subwoofer and a 100" screen and a decent projector (epson 8350 or similar).

Great setups guys! Love this thread!

To those wondering about the missing walls- it is a basement. It's also not my house, I just rent. There are plans to finish the walls though, and for now ghetto basement has but a single deer head hanging on the wall that doesn't seem quite as judgmental about people :P

As I mentioned before, I'm very much into having the right equipment over having an attractive space to utilize. I've got a plan in motion to set my stuff up in my much more normal looking bedroom at some point but I'm hardly in a large hurry. I guess I could , I don't know, save up for a proper personal living space :P

The rest of you got some great set ups as always. That MS employee only white xbox one does look pretty cool at stinkles place.

I bought new radio 3D glasses and a stand for the JVC. They are brighter than the IR glasses.

I need to get a stand for my JVC glasses (Well my 3D glasses in general). I also need to compare the RF to the IR glasses again, because the last time I had watched, I didn't notice a big difference in brightness.

My stand is from amazon Germany. Look out for one on amazon.com.

The glasses are the samsung Samsung SSG-5100GB/XC. Compatible to the JVC RF emitter.

you should try those 3M wallhooks. You could MacGyver something custom, largely invisible and foolproof for a few dollars.

This site is a great tool. Punch in your projector model, the size of the screen, and it'll give you all kinds of info on what distances you can place the projector at, what screen size you can achieve with adequate brightness, etc.

Is the screen just hanging freely there for the most part (it appears to be)? Like can you walk in front of and behind?

Do you get any waves or distortion in the material from rolling it up and down? I'm about to buy an electric screen that will roll down over a bay window in our living room and was curious what your experiences are. I've been doing a ton of research and it seems like if you're not buying a tab-tension screen (and spending 800+ bucks) then your'e going to likely get waves in it.

The one I've been looking at is an Elite Screens 125" electric, so any advice you have would be great.

Here is a pic I took while game planning the whole rig....

4ihLccMl.jpg

what you are looking is the view from my couch towards the kitchen. As you can see there is a soffit from the ceiling. Attached below that is cabinets (that actually open into the kitchen. The cabinets doors on this side are for aesthetics....) and small opening that provides a view into my kitchen and then the breakfast bar.

So.... the tube of the screen is tacked to the back side of the soffit next to the ceiling. Then we just simply pull it down.

As far as waving and such, there is actually an area on the right corner that produces a very small vertical roll, but when the projector is on, its virtually un noticeable.
So I haven't noticed and issues.

The real challenge was the 4 windows I have the face the screen directly behind my couch. However, I live in the city on a east west street so while I get plenty of light in my place, it's no real detriment to day time viewing. I just simply created a day time setting for it.

So when the screen is rolled up, it looks like this... but you know... with less shit all over the place.

Uoz9wJnl.jpg

So I guess my advice it mostly to get a screen with a good "gain". Also, be aware of where your ceiling joists are. Like I posted previously, we got lucky to hit one on our first try. However, it often think about how we would have had to adjust had a ceiling joist been 6 inches closer of farther. Because then you are talking about mounting plates and that may not look all that great in a family room.

Ours is our main TV and I love the fact that when the wife and I play video games or watch TV, we essentially have a theater. Then when we head to bed, I pull the chord, and the screen disappears opening up my family room and kitchen area again. It gives my place a nice clean, new, simple look.

I'm at work now, but Ill try to remember to measure the distances and such when I get home.... if I forget, I apologize.

Right on, thanks for the pics, the setup makes more sense now.

Gain has to do with how the screen reflects light, not the material of said screen. I've got the measurements already down (I've done this before) but I'm going from a fixed-frame to an electric so I'm just concerned that in 10 months I'm going to have a screen that bends and curls in places from the constant up and down. Seems like you have minimal issues and that's good to know.

Protip, next time buy a stud-finder, sounds like you got lucky this time :P

Yeah, I have one I just left it at the shop (wife and I own a business across town). Here was exact conversation:

Where's the stud finder?
"At the shop."
What if there's no beam?
"This is going to be hilarious.."
Well, it's all on you then.
"Fuck it."

*Drills into ceiling* Hits Beam*
FUCK YEAH!
"See honey? This was meant to be!"

I always find beams in ceilings by drilling tiny 1/2mm holes, or carefully tapping long pins in. You can't even see the holes afterwards. Any resistance once through the plasterboard usually means a beam.

Or a water pipe.

Love that room, BTW.

And thus far, no ripples.

(Also, I think someone else asked about measurements. Either way this thread is awesome!)

Mancave nearing completion. Doors are being fitted for frosted glass. Sub is hiding in the left cabinet.

K4MpEuN.jpg

This is very much in line with what I'm looking to do in my family room.

Quick question, did you start with pre-made cabinets for the base or is it completely from scratch? Trying to decide the best way to attack this.

I totally forgot that I could do so! I was comparing the new RF JVC glasses to the older ones. I know that the lens tint is a bit different, but I couldn't really tell that much of a difference. I will check out some other RF options.

Cheers!

That's actually a great idea. The best part is if you mess up/do not like where it is, it can come off the wall with ease.

This is pretty sweet but do you by any chance know what the latency is for your projector? I feel like projectors would have a higher latency than standard HDTV's by default. Which, granted, wouldn't matter too much for movie viewing, but I'm pretty sure we're all gamers here. With the most popular gaming genre currently being FPS, latency plays something of a large part in that.

I've thought about switching to a projector many times but have yet to. To me, the cons far outweigh the single pro of a larger screen. Does look pretty epic though!

Awesome room you got there!
I really like the atmosphere. It looks so clean, I want to live in there, right now :D

May I ask if you live with your parents? (because "little brother's room", TV and computer in bedroom) Or is you whole apartment like this? If so, please, more pics of it.

Awesome setup Faith. Super clean and lots of attention to detail.
Thanks a lot :)

I am a Chemistry student and live with my parents and my brother. But before I began to study I worked for almost a whole year in a consumer electronics shop. With the earnings I could buy all the stuff in my room and the furniture.

Before that it looked more like this:

Luckily I had some basic 3D modeling skills and was able to test some concepts out in Cinema 4D. This was my final plan:
