Shrek 5 will completely reinvent the series

Shrek 5 is currently in development, in case you had forgotten, and its screenwriter says it’s going to completely reinvent the franchise.

Michael McCullers gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter about his new animated movie, Boss Baby, and answered a few questions about the upcoming Shrek film. McCullers said that going into the film, which will be the first Shrek movie under Universal’s banner, they wanted to change things up. DreamWorks, the studio Shrek films are created in, was sold to Universal last April for close to $4 billion. The team behind the Shrek movies saw that change in ownership as a sign that it was time to reinvent what people knew about Shrek.

“I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level,” McCullers said. “Reinvention was sort of called for. There’s been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.”

Shrek 5 was confirmed by DreamWorks last July. The last Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, was released in 2010. It’s unclear if Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy will return for the new film, but they were all a part of the fourth film.

Shrek 5 is slated to be released in 2019.

Send me to the swamp if old.

SOMEBODY ONCE TOLD ME THE WORLD IS GONNA ROLL ME

I'm not against them making new Shrek films as it was obviously a successful break and though the series hasn't been gone for a super long period of time it's still been several years at this point, but I don't think calling it Shrek 5 gives the impression it's a reinvention so if they want to sell that point they'll have to market it wisely.

There will be close to 10 years gap between Shrek 4 and Shrek 5, damn. Can't say what can they do to "reinvent" it? Will they go the full on comedy route or grimdark one?

Translation: Shitty attempt to make Shreks child the focus so they can do some shitty shitty transitional type film where Shrek mentors the child on some shitty adventure in the hope that they can make Shrek 6 without having to pay Myers, Diaz and / Murphy

I did actually like Shrek 4 as a closing film of the franchise, disliked 2 and 3 and thought 1 was good

Announced last July 2016 and will release 3 years later ? Thats some long ass production

Welcome to the world of 3D film making. Did you know a Pixar movie as for example takes 4-7 years to make?

For Dreamworks they say most of their films take around 4 years to make, a more general ballpark would be 3-5 years.

Translation of Translation: They're planning for the franchise's inevitable move to Direct-To-DVD trash.

Shrek+Minions+Smash Mouth= 1 billion dollar film franchise

I hope it's a horror reboot where a group of starving drifters in a time of famine happen upon the seemingly decades-abandoned swamp property, but little do they know that the children of Shrek were cannibalized by Shrek to survive and he's still there for them, The Green Goblin

The last one was pretty dark, so that wouldn't be much of a change. It also had very few pop culture references.

Can we have it so it's like the early screening version of the Monster Trucks movie, where a load of children go in and start screaming in terror at hillariously fucking terrifying monsters
