Silent Hill 2 is the best remake of all time.

Against all odds, with all the expectations of Bloober not being able to pull it off, they've absolutely done it. Silent Hill 2 is in my top 5 favourite games of all time, so I went into the remake with expectations low.

What I experienced was the most faithful and respectful remake I think I've ever seen.

I just wanted to put this here as not often in this day and age do we get a gem like this, and the moment needs to be savoured.

Everything is amazing about it, the art direction, the gameplay, the sound (Jesus fucking christ you need to try this with headphones!)

Perhaps I am old and shaking my fist at the cloud, however this is by far the best release this year and should be celebrated accordingly.

The bar was absurdly high for a remake, and they've done it. They've done it well.

Absolutely well done Bloober team.

I don't really have a big list of remakes to be honest. It's almost entirely Resident Evil. But yeah, reception seems very positive. Definitely looking to try it at some point. My current list is probably:

1) Resident Evil 1
2) Demon's Souls
3) Resident Evil 2
4) Everything else.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Metal Gear 3 is like, #4 or 5 on my list because there's barely any remakes that even matter. I'm not counting reboots, of which there are many great ones.

The ones I'm most excited for are Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia.

but did RE4 really need a remake?

I have 0 nostalgia in regards to RE4 or SH2 the originals as I was never a fan nor did I finish either back in the day, so as a fresh meat, RE4R is not just a great remake but genuinely in my top games of all time. SH2 is great as well, but under it. I'd put it at the same level as System Shock remake and Dead Space remakes, which were both 8/10 games for me.

I have yet to play it but anybody remaking a game can’t seem to stop themselves from changing things unnecessarily. I saw some signage changed along with the changes to Maria. I think on those grounds alone it is disqualified. Even Bluepoint couldn’t resist changing things they shouldn’t have. Resident Evil 2 is still king, even with its flaws.

All studios seem to forget the job and refuse to keep their egos in check.

So this is "disqualified" for changing an outfit (which subjectively better looks btw), but RE2 is the king despite changing or even cutting way more stuff? Okay...

They haven't changed anything except the face. The same undertones and story are there. I feel that a lot of those who misunderstood the original story or don't know it are just jumping on the bandwagon of "she looks like Mulder from x-files lol" when it's really not the case. I'm against DEI as much as the next reasonable, same person on this forum, but if there is ever a character to ever complain about being de-sexualised in a remake, it's Angela from SH2. If anyone has a problem with it, then they haven't played the original or don't understand the story. It's a non issue.

Better than The Last Of Us?
I’d say almost equal, because like SH2, The Last Of Us simply remade greatness and kept the greatness. If anything, SH2:R moves more toward reimagining at some points.

Because Silent Hill is my favorite franchise overall, it gets the nod and I’m stoked to see what Bloober does with my absolute favorite in the series - which is the original! As far as Remakes go, it’s my absolute favorite (even over RE3R, which I enjoyed over RE2R).

I totally agree. I'm not quite finished with it yet but it's an amazing game and it's very respectful towards the original, while at the same time elevating it to new heights. Graphics, sound design, performances, combat, everything is put together with the utmost care and love for the original. It's a true masterpiece and easily my game of the year so far. Well done Bloober 🙌

My brother in Christ, do yourself a favour and go play the original RE4 and SH2. Thank me later.

Bloober's mediocre output prior to this game absolutely justified the cynicism a lot of us had about how this remake would turn out.
“Mediocre” to you, perhaps. Plenty of other folks enjoyed their games. So, no, I wouldn’t say one opinion is justified over the other.

Mister Wolf Mister Wolf

Depends. Both excel at what they’re trying to do. I enjoyed SH2R more though, no doubt!

I think ure confusing RE3 with RE2. RE2 Remake is fucking amazing.

While RE2 remake is amazing from a mechanical/gameplay point of view, there were a ton of things that they decided to omit from the remake, some bafflingly so.

They then dialed that up to 100 for 3 and it ended up being an utter joke.

If I had to rank all the recent remakes we've had then it would go like this:

  1. System Shock
  2. Silent Hill 2
  3. Demons Souls
  4. RE2
  5. Dead Space
  6. RE4
  7. RE3

It is, but not as good as SH2 imo.

Yeah this pretty much checks out for me tbh. System shock remake is amazing too.

Cracks me up seeing this about face when a good few of us tried to tell y’all the game was going to be great!
Dude, there are three types of people who take guesses on how a game will turn out. Those who say it will be great, those that say it will be good, and those who say it will suck.

Fact of the matter is Konami hasn’t made a new game of any note in years, Bloober has a less than solid track record.

Some of you saying it was going to be great and bragging about it to me is as worthless as saying the sun will rise tomorrow.

And that’s fine. On that token, your view is just as worthless since I enjoyed Bloober’s games and thought all early footage looked good, as did many others. Stalemate it is. 🙂

I’m really enjoying Silent Hill 2 remake so far, but it doesn’t top Demon’s Souls remake or Shadow of the Colossus remake for me personally.

Bluepoint are the remake kings.

But I’m only about 4 hours in so I guess it remains to be seen. Demon’s Souls remake absolutely floored me right off the bat though.

Apologies, original reply was misread, you are on about Maria, have you played the original? Do you understand what Maria is? The nurses are James' representation of sexual attraction, not Maria or Pyramid Head.

Dang no one has Persona 3 Remake in their list

Haven't played SH2 remake yet, only the original long, long ago but I will wait for a price drop before reserving judgment.
