REmake is the GOAT-remake. It will never be dethroned. Released in 2002 and is still a benchmark.
This is the only answer. Most "remakes" simply retouched modern visuals, some with extra content. The closest thing to REmake is FF7, IF it wasn't split into 3 different games.
REmake truly embodies this term to the absolute purity. It reimagines everything from the start. Changed the entire mansion while making it feel familiar, a new crimson zombie (which has never been dethroned as the scariest enemy in the entire series), a more atmospheric environment, full 3D model render for consistency. There was nothing that was removed, for the sake of "modernity", instead they dialled everything up to 11 plus a tie in with RE3's Nemesis program. THAT, was brilliant. It retold the story without being disingenuous about the delivery.
For REmake, you aren't just playing Resident Evil, you are playing it as if it was the first time despite fans being familiar with the original.
You never lose the distinction between both games, it never tries to outdo or "fix" the original game. It was a love letter to the OG in every single way. It's why I have no problem going back to playing it even with the REmake being absolutely superior in every conceivable way.
And this OP is telling us that SH2 remake can top this?
Come on now. So, I haven't played the remake but did they keep that "scene" in the game. You know the one where the Pyramid Head did the... You know.. thing?
