Silent Hill 2 is the best remake of all time.

Haven't finished it yet, but so far I'd be inclined to agree.

I'm personally not as impressed by remakes akin to Demon's Souls or Shadow of the Colossus and the like, because they're literally the same games with a new coat of paint, whereas games like Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 are complete reimaginings from the ground-up, which I feel is a much more daunting task and a much more impressive accomplishment when they're good.

I wouldn’t say this nor RE2R are “complete reimaginings”. RER is much closer to a full reimagining.

The best ones for me are Shadow of the Colossus and The Last of Us Part 1 (it wasnt really needed), i want my remakes to be 1:1, with simple QoL improvements if needed and better graphics, i want the rest, especially music to be left intact, this is why Demon's Souls remake doesnt get to be listed

The best remake of all time might be a draw between Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and GC's Resident Evil Remake
I can't argue with REmake GC, but FFVII hasn't finished being remade yet, and I feel the SH2 is better than RE so imo this is the best remake ever made. So far.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I mean, in a couple of weeks we are getting a remake that turns this game

Which might be more of a glow up than SH2, guess we'll see.

Against all odds, with all the expectations of Bloober not being able to pull it off, they've absolutely done it. Silent Hill 2 is in my top 5 favourite games of all time, so I went into the remake with expectations low.

What I experienced was the most faithful and respectful remake I think I've ever seen.

I just wanted to put this here as not often in this day and age do we get a gem like this, and the moment needs to be savoured.

Everything is amazing about it, the art direction, the gameplay, the sound (Jesus fucking christ you need to try this with headphones!)

Perhaps I am old and shaking my fist at the cloud, however this is by far the best release this year and should be celebrated accordingly.

The bar was absurdly high for a remake, and they've done it. They've done it well.

Absolutely well done Bloober team.
all but the technical issues

Obviously the best remake of all time:

Fortunately, I believe they're remastering it so it can be experienced by a new generation who don't have to put up with the dated presentation of this version.
You, me and everyone we know... Know that there's gonna be a 4th? version of TLOU1.
It would be fun as fuck is they actually do TLOU PART I REMAKE. or better yet, "TLOU1 THE TV-SHOW SEASON 1 THE GAME"

I'm still early into the game, but the game feels really well developed so far, aside from obvious performance issues due to the nature of the engine itself.

RE2 and RE4 remakes still are top of the remakes of this generation, imo, but then again, I'm naturally biased towards these two games, since I'm an RE fan.

One of the best, absolutely yes.

I was one of the naysayers, and happy to be proven so wrong.

Original Team Silent members like Ito and Yamaoka being on this project helped Bloober a lot guiding them along the way, I think, compared to a scenario where they were just contracted by Konami and left alone, to hit deadlines after deadlines.

I have to say it's definitely a scary game. Not as many enemies at once which makes expecting an enemy makes things unnerving. What's with the heels on the enemy's feet?

Resident Evil I expect certain things at a distance, but with this game it's goosebumps at every corner.

It's a special case here with Silent Hill 2.
Being such a creepy game...
So depending of the art style and MOOD, I'm still debating with my turbo-nerd self if it was a good idea or not.

And it's not even something related to the game itself, it's more about the zeitgeist of PS2 generation and survival horror genre. The whole genre it peaked so so high, with so many weird and creepy games, that Silent Hill 2 being on top (top 1-3 at least) makes it highly meritorious.

Also, worth mentioning the way we used to play back then during the very beginning of the PS2 generation:

Right now, everyone in da hood owns a fucking 4k pro streamer setup so clean that looks like fucking Heisenberg's lab.
How can you be immersed into a japanese psychological thriller horror survival weird whacky eerie game playing like that?

Imho, the remake is good. But it all feels so clean and artificial, thus lacking a big part of its creepyness. The aforementioned point about the zeitgeist of the PS2 generation is important too. We live in the future now. It's not gonna be as creepy.

Ps: sorry for this weird ranting, took a couple beers. Long live Japan and the Ps2.

I believe it is, yes. Maybe tied with RE 2.

There are many remakes that only upgrade graphics (Demons Souls, Shadow of the Colossus) and others that also adds plenty of stuff while not changing the core gameplay too much (REmake, RE 4 remake etc.)

RE 2 might be the one that comes closest to what SH 2 did, because it also remade a game with tank controls to one with 3rd person over the shoulder gameplay. No easy task. You gotta rethink the whole game's design, level layout, combat etc.

I loved RE 2 Remake back then, and it was very polished. I would say its the better product when compared to SH 2.

But SH 2 is so much more fun to play, imo. Pacing is perfect, game is scary af, it has some decent melee combat (that isnt overpowering, so you have to use weapons sometimes), great acting, great story, amazing graphics ...

I love Demons Souls, but aside from graphics, its the same damn game. Same for so many other remakes mentioned here.

RE 4 Remake is a case of "not better, just different". It's really good. But that floaty gameplay from the new RE games compared to the snappiness of the original RE 4 ... Nah. I feel the need to play the original for gameplay purposes. So much more fun. And the pacing isnt nearly as good as the original.

I would also put Mafia up there with some of the best. They've done an incredible job with that one.

Probably, but characters art is not there for me, it seems people don't really like about what made og standout artistically so maybe it's ok. I'll just pretend it doesn't exist once internet stops talking about it

Not sure about best remake yet but way better than all RE remakes expect Rebirth for sure. The game is spectacular

People answering demons souls are… kinda weird people. I mean the game is just a visual remaster, makes me think these people must be pretty much retarded. Just weird people you don’t really want to be around.

Nah, it's pretty fucking great, actually.

Edit: TLOUpt1 trumps it, too. Only because the original PS3 TLOU was the perfect storm of elements and it made a phenomenal experience, and it's the same game, every time they release it, the only difference being like number of jiggling grass blades on screen at one time and ND fucking turning to the fans and being like "PUNKED, GAYS! Everyone who bought the LAST absolute definitive edition are simp whale dumbasses, because THIS one is the rockz0rz! For sure this time!" Hard to beat one of the best PS3 titles. Even on the PS4. And PS5. And PC. And HBO retellings. And stage plays. And

Have you played the original?

Have you played the original?
Yes. I'm old as hell and played it when it released. The remakes looks good, but I wasn't sure if it was a REmake style remake, or a more traditional remake that tries to stay as close to the source material as possible outside of the visual enhancement.

Very good. Better than we ever thought it would be.

But it doesn't even approach best remake ever. Probably not even top ten.
As a game it works but when compared to the PS2 game it loses a lot and the 'PS2 memories' interactions just make things worse.
The ideal solution will be Sony putting PS1/PS2 hardware on a PS6 and getting Konami to reconfigure SH1 and SH2 to work with full DualSense feedback(more than we get in SH2 remake). Have Konami do the exact same thing for Castlevania and make the joysticks work. While they're at it they could upgrade the control schemes to make use of the touchpad while keeping the PS1/PS2's control scheme's optional. A re-release that delivers 100% of the original content on the original hardware with optional modernization but the ability to play games exactly as they exist on PS1/PS2.
