Silent Hill 4...

Is this game somewhat of a disappointment for anyone else here? I bought it three days ago with the hope that the critics were wrong and this was another excellent SH game. It all started good. Beatiful music, great graphics, interesting story etc.

I'm here: http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/article/524/524971/silent-hill-4-the-room-20040621100247686.jpg (Eileen is with me)

Something happened to my apartment as well. I can't regain health anymore! And those damn ghosts are super annoying! What's their function? Only to annoy the player?!

Anyway, the game feels really hard now and I'm slightly loosing my interest for it :(

I am somewhat a silent hill fan.
I got this game a while ago but only put about an hr in.
I am gonna jump back in with an open mind fuck the reviews.

I'm a huge SH fan and I can't fuckin' stand SH4. I've made at least three separate attempts at playing it through from the start now, and every time I just turn the console off and leave when I reach the forest. The game is just so...devoid of anything SH and -- even worse -- anything scary.

I don't like the sound of that.
The only Silent hil I beat and played the whole way through was 3.

I'm also a huge SH fan and was quite disappointed. I still enjoyed the experience, but it was nowhere near as special as the first three...

I'm a huge fan of Silent Hill 1 and 2 (prefer 1 myself) and I too was massively dissapointed with this new one. At first I liked the idea but the game quickly became a bore for me.

Still give it a shot if you wish, I didn't find it at all scary but I'm sure it'll please a few of you guys.

About this with my apartment. Why is it all bloody and my life takes damage as soon as I'm nere certain areas? I can barely save without loosing some of my life.

I stayed with the game hoping it would worth it in the end. It had a few good moments, but I felt kinda jipped in the end. I agree it's the weakest in the series, but that might be because it didn't really do anything new for the series.

Your apartment was being intruded with ghosts (some invisible), use your Holy Candle if you want to clean it up, or equip the Saint Medallion to prevent lost of health.

You shouldn't have taken the doll.....
I knew that fucker was up to no good! Is there anyway to get rid of it? Will I ever be able to regain my health in my apartment?

Will my health go up if I do that? Haha, I hate living on so few health kits.

No. Once intruded, no more health gain.

And BTW, with or without the doll your room will be intruded, the difference is whether you have put the doll into the storage box and introduce another intrusion (over the wall at the storage box).

Having recently beaten Silent Hill 2 I kinda want this game, but I'm being scared away from all the negative attitudes here. Is there a point to playing the game if I only really like the game for the story?

I am a big fan of the Silent Hill series too and I've played through #4 already and even though it is the weakest it is still worth playing through if you like how the story played out in past games.
There are a couple of freakin awesome enemies in Silent Hill 4 (as well as some that you will hate). But all in all it's still a good game.
I'm not too excited about them saying that they might go to the First Person view for the next game.

Silent Hill 4's above average in my eyes. Some of the gameplay changes were interesting, but it was horribly slow and repetative. It was pretty creepy, though, and the graphics are real pretty and gruesome. Silent Hill 3 still takes the nod as my favorite SH, followed by SH1, SH2 and last, SH4.

There's an SH title in development for next generation systems, so I look forward to seeing more about it.

The story is probably the only reason I kept playing.

How long is the game? I've played for around 5h on Normal. I want to finish it since I'm a huge SH-fan, but the game is not that good. It's nice with all the lights though :)

I really enjoyed it. Nice atmopshere, interesting story... the repetitiveness never bothered me. I much prefer it to SH 3.

I'm a big SH2 fan, and I'm currently playing through SH4. It has its good points and bad points.

Some of the things that I like about the game:
I love the textures. Oh, those creepy walls.....
I love the city-scape. The view out the window is really exceptional and reminiscent of Hitchcock's Rear Window.
I like the subtle changes in and around the room as the game progresses.
I like a few of the locations.
The subway, the prison, and the city
were the best (so far).
During the
apartment world, when you are in your apartment, and the guy just stares ar you through the key hole
.
That
creepy-ass bunny in Eileens bedroom. It's fvcking pointing at me now!

Some the things I don't like about the game:
I don't like the abrupt nature of the game. There's no suspense at the beginning.
I don't like the animal enemies. WTF is a leopard or monkey doing in the middle of a metropolitan area? As far as I know, there's no other thematic tie to the rest of the game, unless we visit a creepy zoo in the near future.
It's a little repetitive. Just a little.
Ghosts give you debilitating migranes. WTF.

Overall, though, I think the most fundamentally successful aspect of the game is the fact that you, as a player, do not leave your own room for the entirety of the time you play the game. This may have been accidental, but after playing SH4 for several hours my own apartment seemed that much more claustrophobic.

I dug the voyeuristic quality of the game. The way it was handled was really spooky. I wish they would have explored that a little more. The game just ended up being more of the same without a great story to back it up.

I like the story. I like all parts in first person. I DON'T like all the third person parts. And you have to play the exact same dungeon twice. I don't know... I think Team Silent lost their way with SH4... they started out good, but the game suffers from an identity crisis. The designs of the dungeons are too open and vacant and just.. blah... for example, the Wish House is terrible looking... I don't know why, it just looks like ass. I don't know, it's better than 3 though. Silent Hill 3 was a travesty to the series... trying to add on to a story that didn't need to be extended... and without the original story creators.

I thought SH3 was great. There were alot of requests for SH's plot to be "completed" and that's basically what SH3 was there to do.

I'm not going to pass judgement on the game yet, seeing as how I'm not quite finished with it. But so far, it's really wanting to live up to SH2, but falling ever so slightly short. Not to say the gameplay hasn't been a good experience.

Wow, I agree with you 100% on SH4.

I like SH4 but that's because I thought the apartment section (which is like 40% of the game) was extremely well done, really cool and immersive. Story was also pretty interesting and I liked the way it was told. But yea, everything outside of the apartment was kinda weak. Not bad (except for the repetition), just weak for the series. Since I put a high emphasis on stories and their presentation in games I felt pretty positive about SH4 even if the 3rd person stuff wasn't up to par.

SH3 is still my favourite. SH2 was great too, but I like the Alessa story more.

Anyway, I kept playing some SH4 last night and
I fought against that guy witht he coat in a corridor. I kicked his ass before I saved and went to bed :P

Gonna play some more soon. I'm really interested in this whole cult thing. That's what made SH3 so great. Going to that church in SH3 was the best place in the game!
