Sim City is now down, the maintenance message is amazing

My girlfriend really really really wants this game, but I don't want to buy it for yet until the server issues are resolved.

The last thing I want to do is give her a lemon.

Is the iusse any better?

It sounds like this will be an issue for a while. Perhaps one of the older Simcity games would suffice in its place?

Look guys don't worry, when the servers are back online, EA will offer up a small portion of free dlc that was removed from the game and specifically set aside to give away in case of drm/server issues. Then a trailer for Mirror's Edge 2 will leak and all will be forgotten. You'll hear a lot of 'omg EA redeemed!'..

Yeah fuck it, will order a return from Amazon. I hope to God Origin bans my account. I am begging for it so I can unleash a shitstorm

EA crappiness aside, Simcity is a good game and Maxis shouldn't be punished or called out for doing what EA likely demanded them to do. There's definitely things I'd like changed in the game (bigger cities, like everyone else) but they do not deserve this.

Who was responsible for testing the code during internal testing and the public betas to ensure a relatively smooth launch? I'm sure EA is culpable as well but don't act like Maxis isn't just as guilty. If the developers had properly stress tested the game they would have been at least marginally better prepared for the strain of launch. This turd lies at the feet of both parties and it's our responsibility to hold both accountable.

Maybe their damn "Beta" tests shouldn't have been locked away behind keys and they shouldn't have done multiple of them each requiring a new key.

Lmao, im so glad this happened. Always online drm is the devil and its very nice to see one of the early implementations fall so hard on its face. It is unfortunate for the people that purchased it but honestly you shouldnt have purchased it.

This is the future of video games folks.

Always-Online DRM.

Ironic, then, that it appears to be never-online!

And no; it's not the future. It's the future of highly-marketed hyped-up projects, you betcha. But For awhile every game out there was an MMOG too; remember those days? "The future of gaming". It's the future until people get sick of the drawbacks and reset to another, previous format.

There will always be lots of games out there that don't have this kind of "Screw you, consumer!" DRM. Nothing that amoral companies like EA or Activision do can stop that.

So no, it's not the future of gaming. It's just what EA will continue doing with the games it...continues to produce.

And I predict that the limitations of such invasive DRM will, over time, hurt them big time. People who have more desirable alternatives will rule the market, piracy or no piracy.

Lets not pretend that Maxis is still the Maxis we remember and love from the old days. It is nothing more than the label EA slaps on its sim-whatever titles now.

Nothing will change, pubs will still push this hard sadly.

Unfortunately just like D3 there is a fanbase that will look past these issues and play it off as growing pains.

or it was an outsourced company that provided the login client.... who knows.

So has legal action been talked about yet? Not even law suits but passing some sort of law or legislation penalizing publishers for what is basically a defective producted? Make them "digitally recall" the product issue refunds untilled they get stuff sorted.

The login client isn't the whole issue considering the number of dropped games, desyncs, rollbacks, etc. Or just plain not loading regions once you're in game. Maxis bears plenty of blame here.

Good luck with that, even here in the UK with EU consumer legislation digital purchases are still the wild west. With the amount of big businesses abusing loopholes (eg valve deeming their services as a subscription) it will remain the lawless vacuum for a while yet.

I love simcity but online DRM prevented my from buying it. It's a game that you play for years to come and EA will shut down the servers after 3 years max. Good luck to all those that bought the game, I'll continue playing Simcity 4.

Yep. They'll also sell a few dozens of addon-packs and when they're done with it and the next Sim City is on the horizon, you can say goodbye to all of that stuff.

Speaking of which, we should be hearing about The Sims 4 any time now. E3 maybe?

I'm sure there is a clause in the EULA that has banned any class-action lawsuits from being brought against them. Everyone is SOL sadly. =(

Call me inconsiderate, but id like this to continue on past the weekend, hopefully getting pulled from steam for a while. At this point i just want the disaster to be as big as possible, hopefully with some real media coverage just to increase EA's discomfort, so they'll get second guessed every time in the future when they try to justify things like these.

If anything, I am rooting for a disaster because I hope it discourages future games to do the same kind of thing. It is a pattern I would like to see become known for disastrous results.

LOL you can't make up whatever you want in your EULA and expect it to hold. They still have to follow laws for good business practice.

That's like saying "If you agree to play this game, we reserve to take money out of your bank account at our discretion, along with having intercourse with a relative of our choosing at our discretion."

EULA's mean shit.

Its already been pulled from Steam.

Am I reading this correctly? EA turned specific features of the game off so that their server's stability would increase?

Is this true? What the fuck kind of world are we living in. What happened? Somebody please clarify...i don't...no i can't believe such a thing exists.

It gets worse. Some people think that EA must have known of the server issues well in advance and and that was the reason for the small city sizes we see.
