'Simpsons' at "halfway point": Groening

The show is so stupid now. It has no point or focus. It's just all over the place. I think the last one I saw had Bart and Lisa on a field trip, and ended with Bart burning a hay statue of Lisa and the family playing instruments and dancing. It makes NO sense. It's like the writers take a bet to see if they can make an episode get fcrom this point to this point, by making shit up as they go. 'Hey I bet you can't open the show with Homer trying to open a jar of pickles, and end with Marge becoming an African Tribe leader!' 'Oh yeah? Your on'.

I imagine thats what goes on within the writing. And suddenly every character can't act serious or have a seirous moment anymore. It was cool when it used to be serious with funny moments and Homer was a dad and had problems and so on, and they didn't try to make every single thing out of his mouth try to be funny. It's like an annoying kid in grade school who tries to be funny ALL the time and nothing is, its just annoying.

Ah, it's the cute thing now to hate The Simpsons.

The show still has great potential, as that last episode with Bart and Lisa viewing the future proved. It still makes me laugh in spots, its characters are endlessly endearing, and even when the show is being self-referential, it does so in a self-deprecating way that shows its writers are still trying.

And yes, I would agree that The Simpsons, even bad, is better than most of the dreck on TV. Those of you who want the show canceled should think about what's likely to replace it.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face

I like to call it "displaying good taste in comedy", but whatever floats your boat.

Maybe you should try changing the channel around instead of watching the kind of stuff that would replace The Simpsons? Sure, there's lots of shit out there, but there's tons of shit in ALL genres of ALL mediums of entertainment. But regardless, The Simpsons, as it is now, is on the lower end of the quality spectrum of TV comedy.

The possibility of something I might watch > something I already know I won't watch

Ah, save me from people whose taste in comedy is vastly superior to mine.

"They'll never stop The Simpsons / have no fears, we've got stories for years / like Marge becomes a robot, maybe Moe gets a cell phone / Has Bart ever owned a bear? / or how about a crazy wedding, where something happens ... and do do do do do...."

You would have a point but some people like me remember watching the first season back when I was 4. I grew up watching this shit. I can remember when Homer goes to College perfectly or when the Simpsons got a pool. Then to see the creators taking a shit on the franchise means more to people. Its dumb to have an attachment to it but who cares, people have them. So having a show turn to shit in such a short amount of time if much more annoying if you were there to watch the classics.

Thankfully, there's always the DVDs. As long as Seasons 3-7 are available (well, 6 and 7 aren't but probably will be by the end of 2006 at the latest), I'll be fine.

I get the impression that Groening is just happy to sit back and take Fox's money to put out a substandard show now

He doesn't care because Fox bent him over with their piss poor handling of Futurama. He's given up on them and has decided to sit back. I read somewhere that the Simpsons pulls in $2 or 3 billion a year. They're not going to give it up. They are probably glad Groening wants to drag it out another 17 years. That means $34-51 billion for them.

South Park>Family Guy+ Simpsons

Damn skippy.

I've been watching Futurama in reruns lately (Fox made it almost impossible to watch the new episodes when it was on) and it is hilarious. Definitely better than The Simpsons is currently, but The Simpsons still makes me laugh. Yes it's lost the brilliance it once had, but I think it's still often very funny. Yeah, there are lame jokes and some awful timing, but there's still a lot of hilarious mixed in with that IMO.

The Simpsons is held back because it has Futurama style humor in a more realistic, tangible world. For example, Fry could lose a limb and get a new one 'cause it's the future. But when Homer gets a sharp object stuck in his head, it goes against the world in the show as well as earlier parts of the series. Of course, the timing and delivery also has problems, but style is the big one.

They should work on doing more clever jokes (like the kids discovering Playboy but without the nude ladies) than "only possible in a cartoon" slapstick humor.

It's hard to believe that the creator of Life in Hell is saying that, though.

I mean, more than anyone, Groening should realize the decline in quality...

He does. He jokes about it constantly.

:lol should have been the first and only reply to this thread.

Thinks he should have been the one to kill Batman's parents.
Although I think there was a clear, sustained peak from Season 3 through Season 7, it didn't become outright bad for another few years. At what point did the characters turn into one-note jokes? Somewhere around the Maude death stunt, perhaps?

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
I really used to like the simpsons, but after I was introduced to the wonders of stewie from family guy and Eric cartman from south park, The Simpsons means nothing to me.

I would prefer the return of Futurama to the continuation of The Simpsons. Maybe Family Guy will have the required impact.

tis but a dream. Although the last few episodes of Futurama wrapped up Fry and Leela pretty well, although not much else :p

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I have never watched an episode of the simpsons and I'm pretty proud of that fact. How many other people can claim to have never watched the simpsons?

The Simpson’s has become too juvenile, gone are the all those reverences to classic movies/books which make you find something new the 10th time you watch an episode.

Southpark on the other hand is getting better.

I tried to get into Futurama and Family Guy. They both suck (Futurama not so much).

Simpsons might not be as great as it used to be, but i do think it can be saved. There are moments of genius in the new episodes, not as frequent as before but enough to make you chuckle.

Im looking foward to the next 17 years of Homer.
