RR HATERZ OWNED

i will be watching this movie tomorrow and will not view this thread till afterwards cause i know people who watch it tonight are gonna get spoiler happy.

but lets try to use teh spoiler tags

I am so hyped on this movie. I'll probably see it this weekend, and I have no idea what it's really about. The style of it all has me hooked.

Yeah I'm mega psyched...And it comes out tomorrow! As soon as I get out of work at 3:30, I'm going to get in line at the theatre.

This is the very first time I've seen the film on opening day. When I mentioned to my gf that maybe we should wait, she nearly tore my head off. :)

Do yourself a favor and read the trade paperbacks. The movie follows the comic's panels scene for scene - you will appreciate it much more if you have seen Frank Miller's original vision in print first. I can't fucking wait for this movie

So...
Dude, you know what I mean. Almost every time there's a new movie thread, some joker will usually come in and pretend to spoil the movie by posting a message that says "everybody dies at the end." But this time, with Sin City, you weren't really joking because that's actually true - to a certain extent.

That's what makes it so funny. Don't you agree? :)

So I saw the premiere for this movie last night. I think alot of people here will absolutly love it. It is non stop violence from beginning to end. I was over all a little bored with the whole movie, but I think that was due to going in with to high expectations. I was also disappointed with the lack of style, from the trailers it looked like it was going to ooze style. Really I was just watching a majority black n white movie in the end.

It has some funny scenes in terms of violence, where you will just go dam that is disgusting. Axes, arrows, grenades, sword, throwing stars, machine guns, bats, knifes, saws... basically anything you could die from you will see in this movie.

Also I have never read the comic book, so keep that in mind when you read my opinions.

I give it 3.5 out of 5.

The trailers looked pretty damn good. And since Millers co-directing and writing the script, atleast it'll be true to the comics. Anyone know when this comes out in the UK?

Some of the reviews of this (especially Manohla Dargis's in the New York Times, which just posted) are reminding me a lot of the reviews for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (which Ebert gave four stars to as well, comparing it to Raiders of the Lost Ark). The positive reviews tend to focus on technical aspects, while the negative ones focus on the screenplay or directing. I'm hesitant.

I won't have time to go to the movies this weekend, anyway--I'll wait to see what the verdict is from my co-workers on Monday.

really?

most of the positive reviews I'v read have said, 'great visually, and is strong enough through its story and characters to not be a waste'

and all the negative reviews have just basically said, 'too much gore, too much nudity' and generally feel a need to comment on morals and misogynist attitudes.

too much gore, too much nudity... That's a positive review in my book :lol Anyway, Ebert said "Every frame contributes, and the story marches from page to page in vivid action snapshots. 'Sin City' could easily have looked as good as it does and still been a mess, if it were not for the energy of Miller's storytelling". I did disagree with his review of Sky Captain but 85-90% of the time, I'm in agreement with Ebert.

Oh, and whoever said the major reviewers would be split half and half, is spot on it seems.

I have to retract my statements in the other thread.

This movie kicked my ass.

How Robert Rodriguez got his groove back. More like how Quentin Tarantino made sure that goofy beaner didn't fuck this one up. I went from full out Robert Rodriguez fanboy with Desperado to OMGWTF?! with The Faculty, Deppsperado, and the rest of the shit he's been churning out.

The casting fucking owned. It was chock full of actors I like, and the nudititties didn't hurt much either.

I've got to say, Prince in a fishnet body suit was hot. I'd hit it!

My apologies to anybody expecting something coherent.

Just go see the movie if you're remotely interested.

+1 for gratuitous axe related violence.

Shit, Marv was a whole hell of a lot more enjoyable in the movie than in the fuckin' comics. Mickey Rourke > Frank Miller!

Apparently the DVD will have all the stories as stand alones on a second disc and theyll all include extra footage.

Rodriguez: We shot the full stories of the books, and I knew we could truncate it down, knowing that we weren't going to lose any scenes; eventually they would all be available for people to see. So the DVD will come out with the theatrical cut, and then there'll be a separate disc that's got the individual episodes separated with their own title card, and you can just watch The Big Fat Kill from beginning to end, the full cut. That's a single story. Then switch over and watch The Yellow Bastard and that's forty five minutes. It'll have all the material back in. So it'll be like the experience of picking up the book, where you pick up one story and you read it from beginning to end. And it'll have all the material in it. You can have, you know, shuffle your own version of the movie and just watch them all separately.

It's not going to feel like, when you watch the separate disc with these materials back in, like, “Oh, I can see why that was cut.” It's a really terrific themed action scene. A lot of the stuff that people will find…I think it's going to be somewhat revolutionary to see those kind of scenes that were cut out, be put back in another format because they seem perfectly fine and they work, they just needed to be taken out for the long haul of the feature. I think it really gives another life and another experience, more akin to reading the books by doing that. That's what makes it easy for us to say, “Let's just shoot everything with a variety of effects, and then if we edit stuff out, we're not really cutting it out and people are never going to see it, they'll be able to see it in a purer form, in a different format.”

It's funny because it's true... well, sort of.

Then how is it funny? Did I just get the entire movie spoiled for me since I know nothing about it and getting my ticket based on hype alone? Spoilers aren't really very cool.

"and all the negative reviews have just basically said, 'too much gore, too much nudity' and generally feel a need to comment on morals and misogynist attitudes."

eh???? The negative reviews:

"So seduced by the visual possibilities of sin that style becomes its own vice."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

"Sin City is one of those films that you know going in is either going to be super-cool or ultra-awful. And in this case, depending on how you look at it, you can't lose or you can't win, because it's both."
-- Tom Maurstad, DALLAS MORNING NEWS

"What we get is a preponderance of sameness. A movie with one vibe that oversells itself and, eventually, overstays its welcome."
-- Bob Longino, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION

"The major problem is that after about 10 minutes, you've seen all the movie's tricks. The look is hypnotic yet never changes."
-- Kirk Honeycutt, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"Rodriguez loves his material so much that he embalmed it."
-- J. Hoberman, VILLAGE VOICE

"Sin City has been made with such scrupulous care and obvious love for its genre influences that it's a shame the movie is kind of a bore."
-- Manohla Dargis, NEW YORK TIMES

Personally, I'm looking for a good reason not to see this movie because of its sheer gratuity, violence and otherwise. This is not a movie I'm going to see with company (least of all females). But it's tough because I really respect Rodriguez and dig the style he's going for. Anything new/different in movies is a big deal for me.

Don't worry about what Spike said. :P

I meant that when I skimmed some of the negative reviews, it felt like the common 'theme' among them was that the movie is 'evil' in one way or another and they felt the need to pull up other reasonings to help bring the movie down.

Like they were disgusted by its treatment of women and graphic violence and so felt compelled to nitpick everything to bring the movie down further.

thats just the impression I got when reading it. I myself don't have very strong feelings about the movie. I wanna see it for style alone and if it turns out to be good movie then, hooray. But I really don't know much about iy myself atm and I don't even know who Rodriguez is.

Just got back from the Midnight. It was good. Damned good. Too tired to write anything else. Too tired to write real sentences. Up in a few hours. Kevin rocks.

Just saw it. Very awesome. Some other friends want to see it Saturday, so I'll probably go with them to see it again on a digital screen.

Jaime King nude.

Carla Gugino nude.

Mickey Rourke IS Marv. Marv is so perfect.

I was kind of expecting a bigger gross-out reaction from the crowd to the second disarming of Yellow Bastard, but it happens so fast I doubt it registered with the stoners.

This midnight showing got so many people the theater opened another screen to handle the crowd. Both showings were completely full and sold out. It was also the first time I saw the ROTS trailer with a packed crowd of the target audience and everyone went nuts.

I don't know dude, you say so.

But if true, not so funny.

Just got back from a midnight screening at the Arclight in Hollywood. Loved the movie, although having read the comics it felt as if I had already seen the film since the movie is a perfect adaptation of the original source material. Without a doubt my favorite acting was Mickey Rourke who nailed Marv. I can't imagine anyone else playing the role as well as he did. I can see how many folks will be turned off by the acting style in Sin City. Some lesser educated film goers may find the acting cheesy but that's the only method that would have fit with the subject matter. I only have a few minor complaints, one being that the music seemed to lack variety. I picked up on 2 or 3 themes and that was it. Otherwise I thought the movie was fantastic. I highly recommend reading the books before making a final judgement because it certainly made me appreciate what Rodriguez and Miller did in bringing Sin City to the big screen.

Wow, that doesn't even make sense. He did one scene. If you're going to say anything, say 'how frank miller didn't allow him to fuck it up'.

Geez, unclench willya? I didn't spoil anything, and neither did Bud. Even if you've never read the comics, with a movie like this, you gotta figure a lot of people are gonna end up dead in some very bad ways. But did I give any names or specifics? NO. So relax, enjoy the ride, and search out the graphic novels after you've seen the film.

I sorta feel like I should boycott this movie for not having Alba get nude. I mean come on everyone else did!! This movie would be twice as high with Alba nude.

Yeah that sucks. Nancy is supposed to be nude in most scenes, it seems that was one of the only departures from the source material. Although if Jessica Alba got nude, I might have to rub one out right there in the theater.. so maybe its for the best.

Going at 8:00 tonight...Can't freaking wait...Damn work...I'm on lunch break right now. Get out at 3:30, get to cash my check, pick up Chaos Theory, some dinner with the girl, and then head to Sin City. What a night!

She's hot.. you'lll rub one out anyway.. hell, why else would someone buy the extra large container of popcorn if it isn't to cut a hole in the bottom.

I like the way you think. Though it does get a bit suspicious when the girl I'm with is "bobbing for popcorn."
