Sly 1 or 2?

I thought I'd try this series and it seems as though Sly 2 is the higher rated one. I own Ratchet and Clank 3 and I don't feel I've missed nothing by not playing the first two. Sly 3 seems to have been a misstep. I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision.

1 is a really good platformer with linear levels and old-school values. i didn't bother playing 2 or 3, which apparently deviate from that style.

Well, I'd buy them both, but that's too big a leap for a series I've never tried.

Yeah, the 1st one is the best. They tried to "GTA-ise" its sequels and never quite achieved the same level of fun.

*edit: and by GTA-ise, I mean, non-linear crap... not gangsta shit

buy Going Commando, play it.

Both are great, but 1 is a better, more focused game. 2 had some awkward hubs and couldn't quite figure out what all it wanted to do with the characters, plus a few glitches and bad design choices they didn't have time to iron out. (3 is a much more polished version of 2's concepts, IMHO, but people seem to think of 2 as better for some reason, maybe the mini-game ADD puts them off.)

One of the things I liked about 1 was that, for a platformer, you could unlock features and abilities that were useful AS you progressed during the game, not after the fact. For example, the immunity to falling and water injuries made that croc sequence so much easier. Usually platformers only give you immunity to something once it doesn't matter anymore.

I never beat those Master Thief Time Trials, though, I remember they were brutal. I should probably go back and give them another shot sometime.

I got about 3 of them then I realized that the commentary is stupid.

Sly 1 is the best. Don't get the GH version though. The cover sucks.

Sly 1 is sort of like Crash Bandicoot but with a lot more toys to play with, and great physics.

Sly 2 has a whole bunch of HUB levels in which all 3 characters must do goals in order to complete a heist, or something similar. So instead of all platforming, you might need to go around stealing keys from enemy characters, or follow a character around in order to get intel.

I enjoyed both quite a lot. Going through Sly 3 now.

You got it backwards -- it's the original cover that sucked and failed to catch peoples' eyes. The GH cover art is quite attractive, outside of the usual GH stripe.

Sly1 tried to mix the Banjo-Kazooie formula with stealth. Very polished, but a bit misguided. I spent more time trying to find the level then I actually spent in it.
Then of course there was the life system. You had lives and 1 hit to a death. That is unless you died a bunch or got 100 coins, which got you up to 2 more hits.
Sadly, by even being able to take a single hit made the levels so much more easier. The lives were a joke, though. Running out just started you over at the beginning of the level.
Other issues I had involved the special move detection.

Thankfully Sly 2 fixed all of that. Much better game, but to fully understand the characters bond and PLOT of the second game, you need to play the first.

2 honestly bored me a bit. "I just did this last year."

Well, that can't really apply to me if I haven't played either.

Anyway, I just picked up part 2. Why? They didn't have part 1 at the Walmart where I used my gift card. Sucks, but I'll play the first one eventually.

So far I'm really liking the vibe of the game. Nice art, characters, and music. Maybe I'll enjoy 2 because you guys also told me to buy Jak 1, and I found that to be a stiffly controlled, archaic exercise in boredom. And since everyone hates the rest of the Jak games, I just avoided those altogether. I will however hunt down Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, since none of them seems to leave you out of the loop in the 1 player mode.
