Smash Bros.: Miyamoto actually requested Pac-Man in Brawl

I'm constantly shocked to learn how much autonomy Miyamoto and Iwata give Sakurai when it comes to SSB. I mean, Miyamoto asking him for permission on something? In a way that's pretty badass.

Well, it's Japan, so I imagine it was more of an asking politely but if you don't do it you're dead to me kind of thing.

I am all for new third party characters. But please don't let Snake be gone. Take the other clones, but don't take my Snake.

Even though Snake was the first third party character announced for a Smash game -- he's always felt out of place. Metal Gear games are more of a Sony thing. I felt like Nintendo was trying to appeal to Konami for more Metal Gear games on Nintendo's console than anything. Sure we got Snake Eater 3D this gen, but there's nothing else. The Twin Snakes is still exclusive, which is cool -- but it's not exactly a great Metal Gear game.

Also want to add that Snake does not belong up there with Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, or Mega Man.

Sakurai has been making critically-acclaimed, high-selling games for 20+ years; he most certainly should have Miyamoto and Iwata's respect. Besides, Miyamoto has never been a producer for Smash Bros; he has to request because he's not in charge of development in Smash Bros, even if he is a senior member of Nintendo.

Sakurai has a special contract with Nintendo and is not a regular employee. Iwata had to make him a deal get him back to make Brawl. That aside I doubt Miyamoto would not respect Sakurai.

Um, Kojima is the one that wanted Snake in Smash.

Oh, to be Miyamoto. With the drop of a name he gets whatever character he damn well desires.

"During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Griss of Neogaf approached me and asked, 'Can't we have Ridley as a NOT-A-FUCKING-BOSS character?'" Sakurai recalled. "At the time, imagining the image of Ridley and his vast and considerable physical volume, I thought to myself, 'Hmmm... That's a little too farfetched.'"

For me it's never a question of deserving. When a character looks/plays good in Smash Bros., it's OK by my book. I wouldn't be against even Sony exclusives like Jak and Ratchet if that was even possible.

Wow, you couldn't be more different than me. The 'Nintendo Celebration' is about half of my enjoyment of the game. I still hate seeing Snake in Brawl all these years later. He still doesn't fit, imo.

I wonder if Miyamoto had any creative input concerning his moveset in Smash 4? It's more based on classic Namco games which seems like something he would have more of an affinity for, whereas I feel like Namco would prefer to have Pac-Manbe designed in a way that promotes their recent Pac-Man game.

Miyamoto knows the best legendary king of arcades belongs in Smash.

He should have asked for these "girls" to get into smash Japan would go crazy. But i like pacman too so that was a good choice.

Actually Miyamoto was a producer for both SSB64 and SSBM (was a supervisor on SSBB). It's not like he doesn't have the authority to order Sakurai around if he wanted to. I remember Sakurai mentioning that he wanted to fully flesh out the single player mode in SSBM, but Miyamoto told him to put most of the focus on the multiplayer.

Sakurai is on the same level as Aonuma, Koizumi, and so would be lower on the pecking order compared to Miyamoto.

The failure of Pac-Man VS. and all the GBA-GCN link stuff should have been a big warning flag to Nintendo not to try any of this "second screen" bullcrap again, and yet here we are...

yep. shitty second screen bullshit like the Nintendo DS & 3DS.
what colossal bombs.

I'd hesitate to call that game a failure. As I recall, Nintendo gave it out for free. And anyone who had enough GBAs to play the game the way it was meant can attest to how much fun it was.

As for the second screen, there's no real tie between that game and the Wii U. The Wii U looks more like Nintendo trying to unify as many of their consoles as possible into a common platform.

Snake was fun for laughs in Brawl but felt kind of stiff and out of place at times. I prefer they continue to go for characters more like Mega Man. Plus, Kojima didn't deserve to have Snake in Brawl in the first place. I always thought it was very disingenuous that Kojima thought Snake was well suited for a SSB title when he's been throwing Nintendo under the bus and talking crap about the fanbase using the "customer focus is too young" spiel for years and using other terrible excuses for not giving support since the N64. 'I can't make a port of MGS 5 for Wii U because I'd have to design a brand new game and base everything around the mystical, hard to grasp concept of the Gamepad's second screen even though I just did a quick and dirty port of MGS3 on 3DS.'

Not to get off on a side tangent, but outside of MGS and Pro Evo, Konami themselves are just an all around awful and near-useless company now. They sit on a TON of amazing IPs and a wealth of incredible mindshare that they now do nothing with. And driving away Iga really shows what their true colors are at this point.

Sakurai recalled. "At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, 'Hmmm... That's a little too farfetched.'"

The only thing farfetched here is that Sakurai seriously wants us to believe that Pac Man didn't make it into the last game because at the time it didn't enter into his mind that the pizza-shaped arcade sprite wasn't the ONLY form of Pac Man that could be used? And now seven years later it dawns on him that, "OH YEAH, I FORGOT! There's ALSO that slightly anthropomorphized version of Pac Man that has arms and legs! Yeah! That works! Good news, Miyamoto-san! I can finally grant your request!!!!"

The real interesting part of the article is the fact that Sakurai at first didn't think Pac-Man could work, and then says that "anything can happen in this world".

It is a fighting game with a racer from F-Zero.

ANYTHING can happen

Yeah, it's obvious to anybody that this isn't the "only" reason Pac-Man wasn't in Smash. At the end of the day I doubt any of us will know the first story, but I can always assume that most decisions are because of $$$$ and time constraints.

Also want to add that Snake does not belong up there with Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, or Mega Man.

If Smash got another character from Konami it should be one that's more Nintendo focused like Simon Belmont or even Bomberman.

I took that comment as more of an amusing "My immediate reaction was..."

It's incredible that someone for not having a character playable is OK with that character's moveset randomly going to someone else.

I like Sami, I don't give half a shit about Snake. What's so incredible?

Unless Famitsu or someone is leaving something out here, this is not the context Sakurai presented it in. And considering his previous history of silly rationalizations for not including certain other characters it just sounds like another odd excuse.

Concerning Kojima characters in SSB4, I'd much rather have Django from Boktai in the game rather than Snake. He'd be a more well-suited, and has never appeared on a non-Nintendo console (to my knowledge).

Guest characters shouldn't elicit a "who?" reaction. They should be gaming icons.

I'm surprised Miyamoto suggested it. I thought that Namco was pushing for him all the way since they are working on the game with Nintendo.

Don't remind me. That's the worst thing about the Microsoft buyout. We lost Banjo Kazooie and Joanna Dark in Smash. Also yeah we probably were gonna get Joanna. We already had an item from her game.

The only reason I have any bitterness for the Microsoft buyout is that characters from Perfect Dark and Killer Instinct would stand out in Smash Bros. while being still being very relevant to Nintendo's history. It's perfect for Smash Bros., and yet it's never gonna happen.

Also I'm annoyed that the arcade version of Killer Instinct 1 isn't on any platform I own, not even 360. I really want to try that game out, but I digress.

Any other 3rd party char should be immediately associated with a Nintendo console or at least the genesis of gaming. Snake was a weird favor because he and sakurai are buddies. Personally I think 2 is more than enough 3rd party love for a game about Nintendo's catalogue. Simon Belmont the hero from Dragon Warrior or Slime somehow would be cool, but niche nintendo chars should get priority over any other 3rd party love unless it means the 3rd party is planning a big new entry into said franchise on Wii U.

It'd be insulting to a character like Sami to waste all the potential of an Advance Wars moveset on a desire to take away some other character's moveset.

Sami represents the Infantry and mech units of Advance Wars. The footsoldiers, in other words.

Snake's moveset has little to nothing to do with him as a character but would be extremely appropriate on, say, a mech from AW.

Which is, you know, the type of unit Sami represents.

Sami who is at best only the 5th most likely AW CO to make it in to Smash.

AW already being a series it doesn't seem likely would make it in with a playable character.

Unless they have a ready made moveset in search of a character.

We aren't talking Ganondorf and Captain Falcon here.

I like Sami, I don't give half a shit about Snake. What's so incredible?

It's the fact that someone wants to kill an existing character and want to put the character's insides to another is off-putting and even lacking in imagination for their favorite character.
