Snatcher was released 25 years ago

One of my favorite games ever and still the best Kojima offered. I'm one of those fans that literally jizz when he puts any of snatcher influences on his newest games (name metal gear).

Such a atmospheric game, such music, such characters... The english dubbing is also top notch and there's so much stuff to do and to see.

It's a work of art and a reason to get the sega cd. You may find no other reason, but no one shouldn't be able to play this game.

I even got the pilot disk for the pc engine when i saw on play-asia a couple of years ago, just to see the differences and i have to say i found the english dub to be better than the japanese one, which is rare.

It's probably the best visual novel game ever. I have policenauts, but i never got to play. I even started on a japanese playstation, but stopped for some reason and never got to play it again. I will try.

This, playing this on the Sega CD was an experience in gaming that was never duplicated since,in my top 5 of all time,a classic.

I just sold my copy of this a couple of months ago. It pained me to do it, but money's been a bit of an issue lately despite putting in 50+ hours a week at work every week. The $250 I got for it really helped out a lot more than keeping the game in storage did.

I do miss it, though... it was one of my favorite games as a kid and definitely one of the best pieces of my gaming collection. I've played through it enough times to know the game by heart though, so the memories will carry me a long way!

Snatcher is an A M A Z I N G game.

Has it been 25 years really?!?

Anyway, if you haven't played this game before you owe it to yourself to enjoy this atmospheric gem. The story, graphics, soundtrack and characters are all top-notch and you will definitely want to experience playing it [not watching youtube playthroughs] yourself.

If you like Blade Runner's world design, the Terminator's Endoskeleton's and Hideo Kojima's games - then you will be in [Outer] Heaven playing this.

Play the Sega CD version if you can - it is the most "complete" version available.

Jeremy Blaustein here. But it can't be 25 since the Sega version, maybe 20, I think.

Still...two decades. BTW, Kiwi is still alive...barely.

I like to imagine a parallel universe where this stuff became popular instead of MGS, would be cool. Loved Snatcher and Policenauts.

This was one of my favorite games ever. Years later I found out that it was made by Kojima, and I thought yep, that make sense -- it's got traces of Metal Gear Solid all over it.

Nice to see you here Mr. Blaustein.

I just wanted to say that Snatcher was probably the very first Japanese game to wow me with it's english localization. Granted, Working Designs had some good localizations on the Sega CD too, but Snatcher was where I felt that the original source material was taken very seriously without cluttering it up with western pop culture references and out of place jokes.

Snatcher really put a lot of later PS1 era games to shame as well, I am mostly looking at Resident Evil. But even a high profile series like that had such a low bar for what an acceptable translation should be. It wasn't really until Metal Gear Solid where I found an english localization that actually topped Snatcher in its overall quality. No ass kissing, I really do mean this.

A big part of what made Snatcher so memorable for 13 year old me was its great voice acting and dialogue. Which was a real treat for its time. It's such a shame that Policenauts never got the same treatment.

What makes Snatcher amazing is how ambitious the plot was 25 years ago. Nothing compares.

It's too bad Kojima got lost in all that Metal Gear babble. Snatcher and Policenauts have a much better writing imo.

i gotta play both snatcher and policenauts.

been saying that since I saw Snatcher in game magazines over 600 years ago.

One of my favorite games of all time (obviously). Ten years ago, my girlfriend bought me a mint condition Sega CDX, mint copy of Snatcher, and two Lethal Enforcers light guns for Christmas. A couple of years later, I married her. Best wife ever!

I love the game. I went out of my way to get the Sega CD version, and I don't regret it at all. Wonderful game (although Policenauts is better, IMO).

The gameplay has aged but the settings and atmosphere is unmatched. I wish Konami would make a sequel, or a remake to this.

couldn't find it in the day for my Sega-CD, tragically...finally played it a few years back & it still blew my mind.

related: anyone looking to sell a complete copy for $150 or so, PM me!

That would be awesome!
And in that parallel universe, the Snatcher franchise would get a more action oriented reboot/offshoot, like the 1993 Syndicate -> 2012 Syndicate did in this universe!
nnnnnnnnnggh...

Such an amazing game. I make it a point to play it at least once a year, along with Turtles in Time and Famicom Detective Club. It's still is one of the best Japanese adventure games ever made.

I have to play Famicom Detective Club once a year, it (and Snatcher) feel like part of a niche genre that never took off that happens to be my favorite, like the JB Harold games.

Yo indie developers, get off the Rogue-like trend and get back to interactive detective games! If I win the lottery they're all I'd make.

what was the deal with the RE translation?

The original PS1 game? As far as I know, the voice director was one of Capcom's Japanese employees who only had a very basic roudimentary understanding of the english language. He told the english voice actors to speak slowly on purpose because he thought english people wouldn't be able to understand what the characters were saying if they were speaking any faster. Which resulted in some of the most hilariously bad dialouge in a game ever.

They did try to improve the localization for RE2, and it was generally better, but at the same time, still nothing special.

I wonder whatever happened to that Snatcher remake in Cryengine.

This is still the main reason I keep my Sega CD, even though I haven't used it in at least a decade.

Some people will hate me for saying this, but Konami should really think about re-releasing Snatcher on iOS/Android. VN type of games work really well on phones (not to mention that nothing's better than playing those games in bed before going to sleep) and it should be able to make a decent amount of money...

It's kinda frustrating that they aren't doing anything with a lot of their backlog in general. You know, except of ignoring their existence for the most part.

That would be a great idea to get more exposure for the game. A Steam version would be pretty cool too.

RE1/2/3 were translated by the same person (Takuya Shiraiwa). RE1's voice director was actually a native English woman, who wasn't exactly a spectacular actor herself (voice of Rebecca). She changed a lot of stuff that made the whole thing even goofier than the original translation. What generally happened with the games was that after the first pass of the translations, revisions were made to the original and sections that changed were translated spot by spot by people who really didn't understand the entire story or context of what they were asked to translate. On top of that many lines were kept very literal or diluted-- almost machine like. Which is why you get goofy stuff like "federal council" instead of "Congress."

The localization picked up in the series when they hired Shinsaku Ohara. He's the reason the translations for REmake and RE4 are pretty good, give or take a few mishaps probably caused by the above tinkering. The series has never had a "perfect" translation, though. It's still wayyyyy behind others in the industry. Whether it be plot mistakes or goofy dialogue.
