The GOAT was released 25 years ago

That is the one. I was not able to finish Revision. I forget what the issue was. They do make changes to the game, enough that I was not enjoying it.

Did You Know? The phrase "Buggy Loop" translates to "My fukken MAN who brings receipts"!

  • Soundcloud theme music to set the tone
  • Explanation of this absolute masterpiece
  • Documentary video about how important it is people play this
  • Memes/important terrible voice acting
  • A goddamn soundboard for prank calls and being added to lists that are likely IRL-universe canon based on how prophetic this game was even a decade after its release
And now it's 25. WTF. I played it well after release, in the early 2010s and it was amazing then. Still is now nearly twice its age.

This game is regularly on sale for stupid low prices, like $1 on Steam. It will probably that price during the summer sale later this week. Everyone needs to buy it, it's an important landmark in gaming history and a true gamer's game.

I paid $2.85 here in Arizona.

I am ashamed to say I've never played past the opening area.

I am long overdue. I also have Revision in my library, but I think I'm going to go for the original experience (with mods for modern systems).

I was waiting for Diablo 2,which came out just 5 days later, and failed to notice this game. It was too archaic by the time I got around to it, sadly. So I didn't get to see it in its prime. For me D2 is the GOAT.

I remember first playing it in 2001 and thinking it was stupid. "Why are terrorists just walking around right next to counterterrorist HQ? This is so stupid. And gunplay sucks."

Then I played MGS1 and No One Lives Forever and realized what my dream game is - a mix of those two, first person serious scifi spy game with good writing.

In 2003 I tried Deus Ex again and realized it is exactly that dream game.

Finished it three more times over the years, finished all the sequels and enjoyed them, despite their flaws.

I would like to replay the whole series, but I need DX to get some good remaster that would integrate GMDX features and add proper good controller support. Same with Invisible War.

I knew this would be about Deus Ex, when you wrote "GOAT" in the title.

What a game, definitely top 5 ever and not in 5th position. Will never forget how good this game is.

Yeah but amidst all this looking back at the franchise look at the sad state of play of where it is now, 25 years later, ALL but dead...the closest we have and will likely get to a Deus Ex today is Cyberpunk 1 and 2....shows you how much the industry has changed in the past 25 years, that despite Adam Jensen's entries not selling like bucket-loads, it will take the fans of the franchise to revive it in some sort of "un-official" way, because no-studio out there is willing to take it on...

It truly is one of the GOATs.

Shoutout to Human Revolution which, while not being as good as OG Deus Ex, is a great game as well.

Yup sadly it seems mainstream gamers are allergic to this genre, immersive sims have closed so many studios, it's almost cursed.

But it's my favourite genre by far

Indie scene picked it up and are doing amazing things with it, just never quite like what Deus Ex felt like.

Daikatana had to drown so Deus Ex could swim. Or something.

I remember trying it back in the day but being too young and dumb to really understand it. "Damn this gun sure sucks". Played it again some years later but never got to finish it, so it might be time to finally do so. Buggy Loop Buggy Loop would you recommend to just install the GOTY Edition from Steam and jumping in with no mods nor anything? I'm guessing that at the very least the community patch would be a must.

Also, wonder if Warren Spector or anyone on his team ever played Goldenye 64 before production. They always mention Ultima Underworld, System Shock and Thief but I think Goldenye already had some similarities with it's open levels and multi objective approach to mission's design.

Yes, GOTY edition and the renderer patches to be more compatible with modern hardware

ZehDon ZehDon 's Post gives the patchers to install for a smoother experience. If I recall, GOTY edition is playable as is but unstable.

Mods are really when you've played the game a lot of times and want a different spice, but they all alter the game too much imo for a 1st play through.

I tried to play this once because it's always been called one of the best games of all time. However, the first NPC you encounter killed me and I haven't tried it since.

For those playing with ultrawide,

OpenGL and custom resolution will work.

Buggy Loop Buggy Loop someone over at kotaku stole your thread and turned it into an article! Ain't linking that site but just saw it on my news feed

Ah, a 25th anniversary article, that's fine. I don't own the concept :messenger_grinning_sweat:
I don't ever read kotaku but whatever means more peoples discovering Deus Ex

Same here. Found it weird I'm supposed to be some cyborg Superman but I can't climb over a crate. I put it down when I found out cyborgs are super flammable.

Augments :)

Leg enhancements will increase speed and jump height by up to 80%, etc.

You start off barebone but augments in this game are kind of insanely cool.

One of the best games of all time, when I played for the first time I was blown away. And it got even better in subsequent playthroughts. I love inmersive sims and this is still one of the best even nowadays. A masterful example of emergent gameplay.

I much preferred Bloodlines from this era admittedly. I got my PC in my room after bugging my parents for months on end. The first games I bought for it (circa 2004 ish) was Deus Ex and Bloodlines. I bounced of this quite hard as I was really burned out on watching the matrix 103190 times and I felt like the game was too similar in style to it, I just could not get immersed. Bloodlines on the other hand felt fresh and new, and much better written.

Admittedly this was on level one. (The statue of liberty) That being said the crates were short enough that a 5 year old should be able to climb up on one.

It's an amazing game and the best example of the "immersive sim" we have, Prey 2017 came close but this game has so much variety and depth and is so satisfying to play that it's the king. I even like the combat after you level up enough it becomes quite fun, but understandably people tend to focus on more novel mechanics in it.

I would actually say Human Revolution is the better game overall. But each to their own. I can't personally go back to this game after so much time, it has aged like milk mechanically, and the goofyness is only good in nostalgia sense.

well well, what a timely post

Controls are funky alright. Was fiddling around and threw my sniper onto the range. But it works better when rebinding on a joystick.
Then German man told me to breech the door. Take your pick hahaa.

I finished the tutorial by building a cardboard box bridge. So do I need a mod for bug fixes or other game breaking shenanigans or can I play as is? Thank you.

Thief: The Dark Project in 1998, System Shock 2 in 1999, Deus Ex in 2000... For those who played them in sequence like that it must have been amazing, I played them a few years later since I didn't really have a capable PC at the time.

Anyway, Deus Ex is one of the best games I have ever played, and it's still relevant since there aren't many good immersive sims. It's for sure worth a playthrough even nowadays.

There are a couple of mods that focus on bug fix and small QoL without changing the vanilla experience. I think the recommended one is Deus Ex Trascended. I don't have much experience with it but it seems well regarded.

If you want the original experience (bugs included as per the last patch) you can just grab Vanilla Fixer.

Don't use Revision or GMDX for a first run.

Don't know if anyone is having playthrough but I sure did, up to paris streets now

Happy Antonio Banderas GIF

This game is still so fucking good 25 years later. Had been years since I played it. The sequence of stories were hazy in my mind, so rediscovering it again still somehow feels fresh.

Yea Prey is fucking excellent so I've always wanted to play this. Thanks for the tips.

Edit: Is the Steam GOTY edition the original??
Bought it. Probably will never play it. Likely doesn't hold its age. I don't like immersive sims.

But 97 cents? Shiiiiiit homie why not?

Finished the playthrough, checked all endings.

It had been such a long time since I last played it that I could not have detailed the story or location progression in detail but all the time as I was playing it was always a déjà vue.

Truely a GOAT. Enjoyed 100% revisiting this after years.

Now to System Shock 2
