Sneak peek at US Navy's new $13B aircraft carrier

How can any member of the military actually support this man?

Wtf is this even?

He's actually correct that EMALS doesn't work as intended at this time. It might in the future. It also has some drawbacks like not being able to take down one launch rail at a time for maintenance. At least from what I read.

He was right for the wrong reason though.

13 billion dollar carrier that hasn't been proven to launch a 300 million dollar plane that has issues supplying oxygen to its pilot. Just amazing.
We have engineers who can find a very expensive solution to all of those problems.

Republicans all believe in the science of killing people. It is when science tries to save lives or improve stuff that things come to a head.

But this does save lives. :D <3

You know that they also have terrible political opinions, right? Opinions that you share.

Politics isn't some game you play on the internet where you pick a side and put their logo on your profile and that's it. There are actual ideas behind these arguments.

'lol go to voat hurr you're not allowed in my club' is some 4chan level lazy thinking, except with reddit replaced with voat

This is why you guys keep losing elections by the way

lol, you're horrible at this

I've already said my argument and how beyond stupid your view of things work.

The president says there has been "a shortfall in military readiness" and decries "a very, very bad time" for the military" in previous years.

Trump hails the $12.9 billion next-generation aircraft carrier as symbolic of a new era when "everyone will know that America is coming and America is coming strong."

All those countries shittalking the US because they weren't scared of their 11 carriers or whatever are going to shut up now that they have one more. Thank you trump.

Proposes free healthcare - But how ya gonna pay for it????

Proposes ludicrously expensive military stuff - Here ya go!!!

OK USA!

Amazing engineering in this thing.

Imagine if that much technical engineering and ingenuity was used for something that improved human lives instead of destroying them with perpetual war, murder, death, and profits!

Or, you could imagine how that money could be used to improve lives in this country... but I guess that's not profitable and therefore not worth it.

Trump had the right idea but got the reasoning for it wrong. The EMAL system is not ready for prime time is going to take a while befor it is. Meanwhile you have this expensive ship that can't be properly deployed until he system is sorted out. The British with the Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales toyed with the idea of the EMAL but wisely decided to go with the classic ski jump launch system because they knew the EMAL wouldn't be up to snuff in the window they wanted both their carriers deployed.

The Ford is to far along for them to scrap the EMAL so they will have to ride out the bumps. But until then they will be forced to bring back the Kittyhawk and delay the replacement of the older Nimitz class ships until the kinks are worked out with the EMAL.

What countermeasures do these massive carriers have against submarines?

Usually a submarine has to get through the entire carrier battlegroup to get to the carrier. So that includes the destroyers, and cruisers and other subs. And the vessals at the edge of the battlegroup would have the necessary detection methods as well as means to destroy the sub (depth charges and whatnot)

That said if a sub was able to get close enough to a carrier and evades the battlegroups detection, aside from say a Phalanx firing into the water there isn't much they can do.

Makes sense. So this is more of a backline vessel that supports the Frontline?

Firing a gun or cannon of any type at water doesn't usually do anything useful, let alone reach depth to hit a sub.

Yup. A carrier is a floating air field. Air power cannot win wars alone (you need boots on ground) but air support is crucial in modern warfare. And if you don't have any airfields near conflict area...

Carrier's are the frontline. The rest just protects the carrier. Basically a carrier is overwhelming firepower at range, but has all the weaknesses of every other ship up close. So the whole point is to never let anything get close to the carrier.

I think the British made a mistake by sticking with the ski jump launch system. Sure it's cheaper and easier to build, but functionality-wise it's vastly inferior to a catapult system. EMAL has issues right now, but considering the long lifespan of these ships it will probably be insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
