Hagane was a rental-exclusive in North America. It's scarce because you could only ostensibly own it if the rental store sold the previously-played rental copy.

Yeah EVO wasn't in there. Not sure why I thought it was.
Possibly it was in a video someone else released around the same time?
I suppose a more scientific way to prove the correlation between these rising prices and Mike Matei is to compare it with games he did not review that are also hidden gems.
SCAT, a NES game that was around $20 loose and $40 CIB, at least according to ebay buy-it-now prices that didn't even sell for the few months I kept my eye on them. I was holding out for an auction with just the cart and manual, since I don't collect boxes and thought I would save maybe $10. Guess what happened? Yep. Mike Matei. Within days, the buy it now prices suddenly jumped to $80 for the cart.
He just reviewed Air Buster a few weeks back. Now look:

It's the unfortunate side effect of "retro reviewers" on youtube; they motivate jerks with too much money and no patience who want an "instant collection" of "rare" games, and drive up prices by mindlessly bidding or hitting BINs for inflated prices. All resellers have to do is follow the videos and pump the BIN prices hoping someone impatient bites, and if it doesn't sell, oh well, relist for no cost.

It's fucking insanity. Looking at it on Price Charting, the price had pretty much floated at $20 for three years before his video. And, yeah, now it looks like it goes for about $60 on eBay normally. Him putting it in a video literally tripled its value.
I feel like it's unfair to be pissed at the dude who is just trying to make youtube videos. But, damn. It's fucked up that one dude has caused certain game prices to skyrocket so much.

I'd just say "fuck buying from Ebay" and be done with it, but at the recent shows/cons I've attended, some of the vendors don't even bother to price their wares. Instead they consult Ebay to price their stuff on the spot. So it's actually farther reaching than just the auction site itself. So damn annoying.
I just thought of another way to look at it. Now those games are being sold for what they are worth. They were underpriced for so many years!

One of the reasons I stopped going to cons. At some point they stopped being a place you can get a good deal on things and became a place that prices above ebay and still makes the sale.
Madden 92 and NHL 93 on the Genesis now cost $50 CIB.
Damn i have all those games on there boxed bar Run Saber, Firepower, and The King Of Dragons. Why the hell as Magic Sword sky rocketed soo much!
So it's been one year since I made this thread. I've been buying up a LOT of video games within the past year or so. The scope of this has been bigger than I originally intended it to, but I think I'm at least 90%-95% of where I want to be with my retro video game collection.
SNES is still a work in progress. Doing some more research about which games I want to buy and I'll probably also get a few more repros as well. I'm probably also going to get BitBoxes for the whole collection once StoneAgeGamer makes them available. Probably won't have manuals for anything but Link to the Past and Super Metroid.

today i did the dsp-1 mod on my everdrive, with a copy of ballz
i have one of the newer revisions that does not require the timing chip or the 74HCU04. does anyone have an older revision of the super everdrive that is looking to do this mod?
if so you can have my copy of ballz for free. of course the dsp chip is gone, but 2 out of 3 are still in it. any interest please send me a pm

So i got another SNES Mini today, but the AV socket looks a bit suspect....
If seems to work fine however, and even wiggling it doesn't seem to effect the picture
It just seems to be missing the bit of plastic that goes between the row of pins...

Compared to the GBPlayer's IQ, how is it?
This is actually all I needed to know, thanks a lot baphomet. I guess if there is any problem with the GBA player, is that the image is a bit blurry. Other than that, it is an amazing piece of hardware.
Any comparison shots out there between the GBA Player and an actual GBA?

As someone who has a pile of carts laying around with dust caps on the bottom but has long since lost the box art, are there any good solutions to replace the original cardboard boxes?
Something like a company that will print on cardboard, or some artwork repository, or a company who specializes in this type of reprint?
I don't much like the "rental" style SNES cases (the ones that are basically like a genesis case that snaps the game in and you print off artwork). I would much prefer to get some sort of box + plastic box protector to properly display.
Anyone?

there are lots of people who sell reproduction cardstock boxes on ebay
i have no idea what the quality is like
So i got another SNES Mini today, but the AV socket looks a bit suspect....

So whilst the multiout socket seem to be ok for composite output that the Mini has from the factory as soon as i modded the console for RGB i was getting just a red display, guess some of the pin were not making correct contact. So i need to fix it.....
Works like a good'un now!!

Damn i forgot what a splendid looking game Tiny Toon Adventures on the SNES is...
One of my favorites on the console. I remember renting this when i was about 5 years old or so. I kept renting it over and over again, and then when i was about 23 i bought a boxed copy. This game still holds up people! And looks fantastic!
Also its one of my favorite shows ever so take what i say with a grain of salt.
It's just about impossible to get Earthbound under 150 dollars for just the cart. Complete in box copies go for at least $300-$400 now, often times more.
Super Metroid can be found CIB for around $100 in good condition though.

It's gone back up a bit. Even going off of auctions only, it's going for 135-145 normally on eBay. Of course, you don't even want to fuck with most Buy it Nows...

A great game that you still can get CIB very cheap. It has that 90's Konami quality feel to it.

Same here, only PS1 instead of PS2. Probably because a lot of the franchises I loved on NES/SNES jumped over to PSX. Mega Man, Castlevania, Final Fantasy and the rest of Squares output that generation, Steet Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Breath of Fire...
It's pretty damn crazy how many third parties jumped from SNES to PSX.

Consider the alternative. Nintendo went with cartridges again in gen 5, keeping expenses up and if devs switched, they'd be free of Nintendo's draconian licensing arrangements. Jumping to PS1 was a no-brainier.

I'm personally fine with it. I'd rather just linking to your post in the B/S/T thread than posting pics and prices here too, though. Starts feeling a little spammy to me otherwise. That's my 2 cents on the matter.
I tend to agree.
I noticed you're kinda spreading out all the stuff you're selling rather than just making one big post, though. Put everything you're selling into one large post, and then post that regularly. You'll get more bites that way. Not everybody will go back through 10 days worth of posts.
