Yasuyuki Oda, producer at SNK to 4Gamer regarding 2017:

“We announced The King of Fighters XIV Ver. 1.10, but we are also considering and making various other things… Developments outside of The King of Fighters are moving along smoothly. And there are several! All of the staff will do their best so that we can make announcements somehow or another in 2017!”

Summary by AT_Ryo_Sakazaki from SRK:

From Oda (Interview by 4Games)

- We announced "KOF XIV Ver.1.10", but we are also considering and making various other things.
- Asamiya Athena version KOF '98 costume already out, we will continue to announce other costumes in other places.
- Other games development (not KOF relate) is proceeding smoothly!
- All the staff will do their best to make announcements in 2017!
- "METAL SLUG ATTACK" will also be updated on a large scale

From Nobuyuki Kuroki's twitter (art director of KOFXIV, worked on Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Garou):

Today was last work in 2016.
We could release KOF14 and was really happy this year.
Please look forward to the next title of SNK!

Previously when asked about their next game they would say that they haven't decided yet and are in the process of pitching projects to their bosses (basically the team was competing to have their fave series be the next game). So it seems that things have moved forward quite a bit since then.

The mobile Metal Slug was named separately so it's probably not one of the titles they are referring to.

I feel really happy for the teams over at SNK. It must be nice to see the company going back to what it does best with those IP's. Seems like they're all excited for the future and so am I.

I will be very surprised if it's not a new SamSho. That M-rated SamSho one of the XIV devs was talking about sounded like a very promising idea.

Iirc Oda said that a new SamSho is their most requested game among fans, which would help a lot with convincing their bosses he said.

As far as fighters go it's definitely the most logical IP to tackle next.

Here's hoping that at least one of the projects they are working on is not a fighter though, a classic beat em up or an action game with Neo_G at the helm would be pretty sweet.

They also said they really want to work on new IP.

SNK might be gaming's greatest comeback story. It feels so right having them back developing new games and fostering a dedicated community.

Like others I think Samurai Shodown will be their next game.

They've teased before about reviving their plethora of dormant IP.

Question is - what will they start with first? Metal Slug would be a safe bet in this day and age (make with it online co-op).

It's obviously going to be a new Card Fighters game.

And please out source Metal Slug to a developer that knows what makes the series so special... 6 and beyond were absolutely horrendous.

Would be surprised if it wasn't a new Samurai Shodown, even though that's what I'm least looking forward to of pretty much all of their franchises... the later sam shos were just so confusingly bad. (though it's not like I won't buy it if it's decent or better)

I'd so much rather have a Last Blade 3

In one hand I'll like another ip that is not samsho since we still got some games in this last 10 years

In the other hand, they need to make a good samsho game again, I'll love them to expand from SamSho 2 or V special which imo are the best one in the series.

My heart says that it will be based on 2

I'm fine with all those games being 3d, is well known that KOF 14 was their first game learning how to do a 3d game using their own engine, they need to use that base and improve from there

Shadow Hearts? Does SNK own the rights to that?!

They were involved with Koudelka, which was a precursor to Shadow Hearts:

Koudelka is the precursor to Sacnoth's Shadow Hearts series. Shadow Hearts takes place in the Koudelka universe and features various locales and characters from Sacnoth's debut work.

Koudelka is a console role-playing game for the PlayStation. It is the first game in the series that would become Shadow Hearts.

Hiroki Kikuta, most known for composing the music to Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) and Seiken Densetsu 3 while working at Squaresoft, created Sacnoth in 1997 with funding from the video game company SNK. Unhappy with what he considered as the disjointed, juvenile, and stagnant nature of most RPGs, Kikuta had intended to take the genre in a whole new direction. Koudelka was to be his magnum opus, the game that would show the world just how far RPGs could go.

Set in 1898 Wales, the game follows the mysterious occurrences surrounding Nemeton Monastery and the three protagonists who, by chance, are forced to investigate its dark history.

Don't do this to me...DOESN'T DO THIS TO ME SIR!!!

I love Shadow Hearts and the fact that there's the smallest of hope for the series is blowing my mind right now. I thought the IP was owned by some pachinko company that abandoned the video game market after the third game.

Whatever hope there is for Shadow Hearts it's doubtful it would be coming from SNK, they haven't been involved with those devs since first going bankrupt in 2000:

Most people agreed that the game showed some promise, but had serious flaws, particularly in the combat system. Disheartened by the political friction within Sacnoth, as well as the financial condition of SNK, Kikuta resigned.

Aruze Entertainment took control of Sacnoth after SNK folded in 2000. Sacnoth changed their name to Nautilus for the development of the sequel Shadow Hearts and future video games. However, in early 2007 Aruze publicly announced dissolving Nautilus and various creative members have since left the company and had joined AQ Interactive subsidiary feelplus (now merged into Marvelous AQL).

What a time to be alive! It's so nice to see them so enthusiastic and passionate! While I know asking for a new fighter with KoF XIII level graphics is a pipe dream but if they can find a way to make a new 2D sprite game would be sweet (like say finish Garou 2 or make some bright and colorful Shantae-inspired Athena platformer) but with that said, I don't mind them seeing more 3D games especially to refine their skills and bring it up to par with other companies.

I'm fine with all those games being 3d, is well known that KOF 14 was their first game learning how to do a 3d game using their own engine, they need to use that base and improve from there

Can I just use this SNK thread to say that I get such a kick out of your avatar
