So am I the only one who thought both Halo 2 and Half Life 2 are fantastic games?

Seriously, good god. It isn't just here, but practically every forum you will have a Half Life 2 thread where Halo 2 is mentioned and a huge battle breaks out. You have a Halo 2 thread where HL2 is mentioned, and then another huge battle breaks out. Here, GA is different. Only at GA can you have a Doom 3 thread where a mini battle between Halo 2 and Half Life 2 breaks out! :lol

Anyway, we get two of the best first person shooters, EVER, which is probably why these fanboy wars break out. But it's getting a bit annoying. We should have on thread on every forum dedicated to fighting about Half Life 2 and Halo 2, instead of having it permeate into multiple threads. THEY ARE BOTH AWESOME GAMES, stop bitching. Yikes.

I'm thoroughly convinced that anyone who claims one is "so much better" than the other hasn't played (and beaten) both. They are both excellent games with very different strengths.

yeah, i don't see why it's either/or. i haven't played hl2 yet...i want the collector's pack, and can't afford it just now. but i'm a huge halo fanboy, and i expect to enjoy it quite a lot.

Halo 2's single player sucks

Half Life 2's single player rocks

Halo 2's multiplayer rocks

Half Life 2's Multiplayer....

Counter Strike Sucks

Agree with everything but your comment about CS. With good players, CS owns. I don't see how anyone could play HL2 and want to return to Halo 2. Meh.

I said KZ was the best FPS I've played on a console, this year.

I like both a lot. I must be a freak. Also, people who hate on either game suck (except for counter strike, it blows).

Half-life 2 is a great game but when it comes to FPS, for me it's all about the combat. And when it comes to single player combat gameplay, Halo 2 is the standard. But when ever i want to stack boxes, i play HL2.

They both have their own strengths.

Ah, Junior Mem...wait, what? MrBob?!?

It's not possible to like two things equally... you have to love one and bitch/moan/troll whenever someone mentions something else. It's the first rule of elitism.

No, they both STINK. The best FPS is clearly Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, a masterpiece that transcends being just a "video game" and is truly a work of art to be admired by all. The masters at Electronic Arts, that good-natured corporation known for treating its employees like gods, have once again released another incredible gaming experience. I have 10 copies of the game purchased already. How about you?

heh

halo 2 does shine in its combat gameplay. Half life 2 isnt particularly great in that department...where half life 2 shines is the graphics and the very creative ways they use the physics engine, and they way they set up certain scenarioes for you to use that physics engine for your benefit to further progress the game. Thats what I really enjoy about half life 2 currently. The combat, imo, sucks compared to halo 2.

i've played (and beaten) both. halo 2 is very good. it's just that half-life 2 is better.

what makes half life 2 better? I love half life 2 and its my 2nd best game of the year, but I honestly cant see how its "the greatest game ever made."

i think that it's all in what you look for in a game. halo 2 is a bit more solid in its combat AI, but pales in the immersion factor. i mean, it's not even close. every half-life chapter has a wildly different feel/theme, each well-executed. i've said it before, but i can't think of anything in halo that even approaches the nova prospekt sequence.

halo 2 often feels like a corridor shooter with a few incredible set pieces thrown in. if it wasn't for the nicely unpredictable AI & legitimate difficulty settings (as opposed to hl2's simple damage modification,) i doubt i'd want to play it again. anyway, i'm a much bigger fan of the multiplayer mode.

3 things kill "immersion factor" for me.

1. Long and frequent loading times.

2. NPCs non-acknowledgement of whats going on around them. Now in the beginning of the game, this was actually done well. I would do shit and the NPCs would react. Id throw shit at them and theyd chase me or say something. I loved it. They acknowledged me being a Dick. And dicks need to be dicks, cause they were pussies, and pussies need to be fucked. but then after the first few levels.....they just stoped acknowledging me. And its annoying. I cant be an asshole. Its like they ignore the fact you just threw a flaming barrel at them and it exploded at them. Its like I dont exist unless they tell me to do something and I do it.

3. Some unrealistic Scripting. I know half life was all about Scripted events, but It takes away the immersion a bit at times cause sometimes, the Scriptedness isnt done correctly and makes things feel a bit unrealistic. For instance.
right after you get the buggy, the first house you come across. There is the thing with a bunch of spiders on his head in the house. Now i tried not going thru the basement first and instead, Stack a box near it and look thru the window to where he was supposed to be so I could get the drop on him and kill him first.....but he was no where to be found in that room....and im thinking wtf. Then I go into the basement, and go back and he is there. So evidently, me going into the basement triggered him spawning....tho he should have spawned into the house as soon as I got near it. or as soon as that area loaded

same thing goes for half life 2 to me. If it wasnt for the great physics, and great ways they implement the physics to have you progress....it would be Doom 3 all over again...in a more...brighter setting.

but the point is, that is not the case, which is why hl2 is so great, same goes for halo 2.

Level design, atmosphere, physics. Pretty much everything. And Half Life 2 is no slouch when it comes to combat. It's not even close. Halo 2, like the first installment, is the best FPS you can get on the Xbox -- which isn't saying much.

i disagree. and im a pc gamer first. but to each his own.

Combat seems 'intense' with non-lifeforms in HL2.* Also those
mother bug things, do not know there name, just seen them in GS video review,
look pretty tough. I doubt you can take them down in one shot like Hunters.

*Still have yet to play it myself.

I'm having the time of my life playing through both games concurrently. God Damn, so much polish and so intense! (Halo 2 on heroic, of course)

Seriously, I love them both. I play Halo 2 more often than I play Half-Life 2, and I haven't beat Half-Life 2 yet, but I love them both. I'm also currently playing Metroid Prime 2, and loving that as well.

No. I watched Halo 2 while my friendly AI took them down.

For real, I never bother with the weak spot. Too much dancing around in some places. Just unloaded on them.

Both are good games.
HL story is better.
HL singleplayer is better.
HL multi is better.
CSS relies more on skill than Halo 2 MP. Technical limitations of TVs/resolution/control come into play here.

Cortana rocks though.

It's a matter of one game being a 95% and one being a 96%.

Why would you want two copies of Killzone?! :/

Anyway, SCORE TIME 'cause we all love them.

Half Life 2 single player - 9.5
Halo 2 single player - 8.5
Halo 2 single player co-op - 9.5
Halo 2 multiplayer - 9.5
CS:Source - 2.5

OVERALL:

Half Life 2-9 (Mods are coming for online)
Halo 2 - 9.5

BOTH ROXOR BUT I SCORED HALO 2 HIGHER OMG HL2 SUX.

Until Valve cuts the Steam demand out of playing/authenticating Half-Life 2, I'm not going to even be playing the game so Halo 2 wins by default.

Enjoyed the gameplay in both tremendously. Probably liked Half Life 2 more, but that's 'cause I have a beefy PC and a prediliction towards FPS stuff on that platform. Halo 2 felt a great deal more epic, story-wise.

That said, I freaking hate that both games went with this "we are doing more games, these are only bumps in the sequel chain, take your goddamn cliffhangers and eat it it, bitches".

Argh. Closure and sense of accomplishment, please. Pretty please?

Both rock.

Half-Life 2 has way too much loading, though, and it seriously hurt the game for me. I would have GLADLY taken a hit in visuals in order to allow for larger maps...

Where am I getting the second copy from? Don't tell me you'd give me your personal copy as well...no need for that. Between that and posting this amateur and hypocritical "Can't we all just get along?" topic on GAF, I'm really starting to get a little concerned for your mental health.

halo2 single player does not suck the combat is as great as ever the story is decent the ending itself in the onlything that sucks.

Gameplay rox.

I liked HL2's single player more than halo 2's because it just felt more complete and improved as the game goes further on, plus I thought some of the weapons were cooler/more interesting than halo 2's (just the bugbait and gravity gun alone are awesome) but halo 2's multiplayer is way better than cs source if you ask me. I mean, CS:S can be fun, but I don't think it has the depth of options, game types, etc. that halo 2 has. I hate to use this comparison because halo 2 is way better than these games, but it's like unreal 2 + unreal tournament 2k4 in one game (except the single player is way better than unreal 2, obviously).
