So, is Disaster Report worth $10?

Read some of the reviews for it on Gamerankings (overall it has a 72%), but I was hoping to get some opinions from fellow GAFers. :D

When information of this game first came about, I was very anxious to play it. The premise sounded fantastic and the visuals didn't look too bad at the time.
Then it was finally released and I just didn't think much about it- pretty much completely forgot about it.

It's at my local Gamestop, used, for $9.99. Should I even bother? I mean, I could buy two extra value meals at McDonalds for that amount. :D

It's a fun game... some frustrating parts
DAMN ROCKET GUY I HATE YOU DIE PLZ K THX!
but also many cool OMG parts. I found it enjoyable, but you need to have a little bit of patience with it.

Sounds like Illbleed.

Yeah, it's worth it. I never did beat it, since I got it and so many other games at last year's Circuit City deal, but I'll go back and finish it one of these days.

72% is the "welllllll, let's be fair" score -- it's an amazing game, and rating it based only on awesomenicity (putting aside technical snafus) I'd put it much, much higher than that.

I'd say it's worth $10, but I feel the technical shortcomings seriously hurt the experience. The slowdown is absolutely atrocious at times, and the camera and controls are a constant obstacle.

The concept is fantastic and the game has its moments, but in general I think it's poorly executed. I'd love to see a more refined take on it from a different developer.

Yes, it is certainly worth $10. Completed a few endings myself and even found most of the custom compasses (like a compass ith an R-Type ship for example). Looking forward to eventually sitting down with it for the remaining endings.

Fantastic game!

I paid over ÂŁ40 including shipping ($70ish?) to get this imported from Amazon.fr when they were faffing around with the UK release for many months, and I'd still say it was worth it. The game is a little low budget, but it has some parts of the game which are very unique any memorable. The sensation of buildings and bridges falling over, and seeing areas of the game you were walking in completely devastated, is something I've yet to see replecated. I completed this game, and I'm looking forward to going back to it.

Roll on Disaster Report 2, and the firefighting game by irem too (it's the same developer I believe).

great game, the framerate is terrible and there are lots of cheap trial and error deaths, but it was interesting enough for me to overlook all of that, been trying to get Karen & Kelly's true endings and I'm looking forward to the sequel :)

I found Disaster Report to be very unique -- enough so to all but overlook the patches of slowdown, which are pretty damn bad at times. It's a survival horror game without the typical brand of horror. There is no wrestling with crap controls to defeat what should be easy enemies, nor are there retarded find-emblem-to-unlock-door puzzles. The believability in the plot, city areas, and puzzles is what drew me in. The way characters regain stamina is pretty ingenious, too; finding fresh water restores it. That's a lot better than health kits randomly strewn about methinks.

I rented this game last year. It was a pretty good experience and a good and fresh idea for a game (sort of), There's a ton of different endings, like 9 I think, I never did beat it but if it's this price I would pick it up again. I think it was severely overlooked by many (including myself) due to a flurry of game releases, it's worth checking out.

Been wanting to pick that game up on the cheap, but I don't like to buy used games, so my options have been limited.

A question: should I be looking for the PS2 or Xbox version? Generally the Xbox versions of games run a little better (and several mentions of slowdown have been brought up in this thread), but I have been privy to some sloppy ports. (I would of course be giving up "Trance Vibrator" support if I went with the Xbox version... oh, cruel loss. ;P)

It's definately worth 10$. The slowdown is awful and the game is kinda clunky but it's still a fun experience for the most part.

There is no xbox version.

One of the most unique and atmospheric games this generation. Fun too! I'd pay full price for it.

I think you have to be a special kind of gamer to be able to appreciate it, though. Steer clear if you're the kind who thinks Madden and NFSU are the best things since sliced bread .... and god help you.

I enjoyed it, but that framerate....

OHHHHHHH, that framerate. Really hurt the game for me. They should have gone the frame skipping route rather than slowing the whole game down. Really a problem...

There's no trance vibrator support in the western version of the game either, and yes - there's definitely no xbox version.

It was taken out of the Western release, but was included in the original Japanese release, then? (I just want to clarify. Not that I even own said peripheral, but I thought that Rez, Space Channel 5 Pt. 2 and Disaster Report were the three games that supported it.))

uhhh, it came out in february. the only other big game i can remember from Q1 03 was Wind Waker

anyhow, i picked it up at full price, and dont regret that one bit. easily one of my fav ps2 games

Although the frame rate sucks balls, it's definitely worth 10 bucks. I played the first few hours of it a year or so ago and put it down only to never come back to it.. wish I'd finished it. Oh well.

I got it... and I'd like to thank all who recommended it. Fantastic game- and it has some unintentional hilarious moments (i.e. me not being extra cautious and running right off the side of a bridge :lol ). Great atmosphere- I love seeing the swaying of a bridge or buildings silently collapsing far in the background.

I really hope we get a sequel for next gen.
