EDIT (June 1): Got the amiibo three-pack. Actually 60 exclusive missions — fresh twists on single-player missions where you use different weapons, work within time limits and ink limits, unleash the kraken, etc. And in addition to the exclusive gear, you get new arcade games and new weapon skins.
Original thread (April 9):
By that I mean, without any alternate way of obtaining them.
When Nintendo announces an amiibo these days, they may as well be talking about something that doesn't exist, because I know that the average person (and even those watching preorders like a hawk) won't be able to get one.
Normally, I don't care, since the in-game application is usually trifling. But with the Splatoon amiibo, I'm reading there are 15 single-player challenges and five rare pieces of gear tied to each figure. So for all three figures (conveniently available in one package), that's 45 single-player challenges and 15 rare pieces of gear.
That sounds like a sizable amount of single-player content... Content that a pre-amiibo Nintendo would've sold as DLC (and probably at a reasonable price, judging by MK8). Yet now it's effectively DLC that only a fraction of the player base will get to experience, because the vast majority of amiibo stock will be locked up with scalpers. The vast majority of people aren't willing to pay more than MSRP to obtain amiibo, so that content will go unused.
Which is why I'm asking if it's possible Nintendo might just sell the DLC separately. It seems very unlikely, since it would rob the amiibo of their utility. But that just goes to underscore the greater problem: Tying what is effectively single-player DLC to a figure that will be nearly impossible to find.
And I want that schoolgirl outfit.
