For some, it's a day of memory.

For some, it's a sort of hypocritical holiday.

For some, it's just another day.

...aye.

I just saw a news story about people doing random acts of kindness tomorrow. These people in Austin were giving out $100 bills to people they saw in the grocery store. Kind of like that movie "Pay it Forward" or whatever the hell it was called.

Life goes on, but, something has changed since that day.

I don't know if it's an increased sense of personal vulnerability, or just the notion that "anything can happen," but I feel it. Or, maybe I'm just older.

Either way, my life changed.

I'm going to wake up tomorrow and see how long it takes me to care. Maybe I'll go for the record this year.

I know that tomorrow I'm going to Rock the Vote with a girl I met, then eat some barbecue, and then go to a college football game.

All in that order, too.

I know what you mean, man...Luckily sheer ignorance and an inability to stop going full steam helps me out here.

I was watching a special on ESPN yesterday and I actually teared up. That's the first time that happened to me, and it's 3 years after the fact. I've been really scared of planes flying over the city since it happened, but I never thought it effected me otherwise.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families.

You know, when I first saw the thread, I thought of Animaniacs for some reason

"It's that time again!"
"Time to eat rotten cheese?"
"Time to learn to use deodorant"
"No, it's time for....THE WHEEL OF MORALITY!"
"Wheel of morality...turn turn turn...tell us the lesson that we should learn"
"Lesson #4. Shower before every meal"

changed everything for me...

I remember 2nd period English class my freshman year of highschool, the principle announcing over the loud speaker that a plane had hit the WTC. Some kids laughed because it seemed so random, noone even thought about it being an attack. The day slowly developed in to chaos as it went on.

I remember 7th period history. The teacher coming in and telling us that he had just watched CNN in the teachers lounge. The footage of the plane going straight in to the tower, and how his heart sunk. He said "The twin towers are gone. But we still have work to do" and began to open his text book. I couldn't conceive of doing work in the face of what had happened. And really, I had difficulty working...in his class mostly...for the rest of the year.

The thing I remember most of all is going to my freinds house after school. Listening to him explain that the towers had actually collapsed on firemen and civilians who had gathered around the scene. Then looking out the window and seeing the smoke billowing across the sky....smoke that had actually carried over in to the Bronx....

Man...

It's my uncle's birthday, too. i completely forgot about 9-11 until i checked my PC's clock, a benefit that comes from having no tv. i feel bad about the surviving loved ones who have to be reminded of the incidents annually through all the various news outlets. Worst part about today on a personal level is that i've got to go back to work, and i really don't feel like hearing the 9-11-flavored small talk that's likely to ensue.

Yeah, you would think it only makes things harder to hear about the anniversary every year. Of course they won't forget the date, but it doesn't need to be thrown in their faces. You usually don't remember the date that someone close to you dies, at least I don't. I mean how many people remember the exact day their grandmother died? Unless it happen on a day of some importance like a birthday. I just don't imagine most people like to put an exact date to the day someone close to them dies.

We aren't going to forget...

we may NEVER lfoget this date, its like the 4th of July, a date that is labeled by its DATE.... so september 11th is now know as 9/11 ... it sucks, but true...

THE TERRORISTS HAVE ALREADY WON

I wonder how bin Laden's gonna celebrate 9/11? Obviously NOT FROM A JAIL CELL, THANKS TO OUR FUCKING INCOMPETENT LEADERSHIP. PROTIP, JUNIOR: THE BAD GUY ISN'T IN IRAQ.

I hate how hicks get all cocky, cracking jokes because they know that terrorists would never do us a favour by blowing up hicksville.

drinky lives in hicksville, now?

:lol

sure, sactown, terrorists could kill us at any moment, but from what i hear, al-qaida is about the big stuff. just a hunch, though...

Because terrorists read a gaming forum and if we joke about attacks made three years ago, they'll blow up our houses. That is some sound logic.

Is it really a holiday in the US?

Not at all what I was getting at.
Maybe there are people on this forum who were closer to the event than you. Many people lost loved ones on that day, I doubt they would appreciate people cracking jokes about it. It would be like joking about someones funeral, even if you don't know the person, it's still a shitty thing to do.

No, it would be like if someone had a funeral, and then a bunch of people latched onto that event every year AFTER the funeral to push their fucking agendas and to beat their chest over how patriotic they are. And yes, those people WOULD be made fun of, and it would be funny.

if i watch anything to do with 9/11 and what happened, i will cry... its just like built in me at this point.. there are so many stories associated with it, peoples lives ruined, people jumping from the buildings, heroism.. etc etc... i cant but help it...

not to start an argument, but.. can you possibly even consider the CHANCE that these people might actually feel its the right thing to do and a way to honor the dead? or is it not possible and every single person who thinks opposite you is taking advantage of the dead?

Your tag says it all. There are a few people who tried to take advantage of 9/11 (just like people do in almost every situation), but that doesn't mean you make a joke of the whole day. Are you saying that there should be no memorial services on the anniversary, there should be no media coverage, we shouldn't honor the memories of the people that lost their lives? I know that I will never be able to treat Septemeber 11th like just another day. I will always be reminded of what happened, and I would never dare to make light of it.

I don't know anyone in NY who acts like that, which is why I believe that if the attacks took place in "your" town, "you" wouldn't be making such jokes about it.

PS. 4 more years

Good Americans die every day. I'll honor 'em once, and by all means, the people closest to them should honor them every chance they want to. But for ANYONE who WASN'T close to them, after the first "funeral" and the associated friendly sympathies, it's just crass opportunism of the lowest order or an excuse for maudlin indulgence. I'm sorry a few of you lost your innocence and security, but for the rest of us cynical bastards, we have nothing to lament more than once.

Today is my birthday. September 11th was always such an un-eventful birthday until 2001. And it's rather annoying when people learn that 9/11 is my birthday and ask "did you know that's the same day as the terrorist attacks?"... Wow, I had no idea.

People still do it.

edit - I forgot, I also had a lady ask me when my birthday was, and when I said September 11th, she said "that's not funny." Since you know, nobody could possibly be born on that day.
