So Nedders wants a new gadget. What should I get?

The choices are as follows:

1. Digital Camera- I've never really been into photography much..it was always frustraing having to wait for the pics to develop to know what you got, and it just seemed like a hassle buying film and replacing rolls etc. Digital cameras and a PC's eliminate much of those frustrations, and while I don't see myself becoming a hobbyist just because I had a camera, I would definitely see myself toting the thing around and using it as the moment dictated. I'd love to photoshop some of my results and keep backlogs of my photos etc. Basically I don't need one, but it would be cool to have.

2. Laptop- Given that I already have a PC, you'd think a laptop would be low priority, but it would be a fantasic organizing tool for school/work thanks to the mere convenience. It would also be nice as a portable DVD player (not that I travel enough to use it in that context, but it would be handy in a tight spot) and a download resource for when I had access to broadband (ie since I have dial-up, if I was at a friends house I could use his connection to snag some big files and take them to my PC etc). Laptops are pricey though, and it would be a bit redundant considering my PC does 90% of the same things the laptop might.

3. PDA- A PDA could be a kind of pseudo-laptop which would help me in much the same way with organization etc, and it would also be far cheaper, more portable, and less clunky. It would also be considerably less functional and have a lot less space for extraneous crap than a laptop. I also don't like the thought of typing with a stylus..but I do like the thought of MP3's and a personal organizer...I'm torn on this one..

4. New Cellphone- My cellphone is practically 2 years old at this point...rocking no color screen, no tricked out ringtones, no picture/video capability, no voice-dialing etc etc. But changing to a new (Sprint) Vision phone, even minus the Vision plan will mean a higher monthly bill, not to mention I'll get none of the rebates since I'm not a new customer. So I'll basically be paying $300-$500+ more monthly for a phone that, despite the fact that it will do more fancy pants shit, is still just a phone. Picture capability could be viewed as a means of avoiding getting a digital camera, but given that the quality is usually sub-par and that they charge so much just to get the fuckers on your PC, I don't see that as necessarily beneficial (especially given that a digi-cam is a one-time purchase with a similar cost to a new phone, minus the monthly bill).

5. I-Pod- I love me some tunes, and the convenience of an I-Pod sounds mighty tempting when I think of the (literally) 20-ish pounds of CDs I have strewn around my vehicle. But that said, I'd prefer to have access to some high-speed download capability to supplement my catalog if I'm going to have an I-Pod, and I'd have trouble justifying a $400+ purchase for music alone. But if one just fell out of the sky, I'd probably use it a lot.

So what should it be? Should I just save my cheese, or maybe get something entirely different? Satellite radio? New TV? A DISH Network DVR? If any of you own these gadgets or can make recommendations based on experience, I would appreciate your input. From a practical standpoint I should want something that improves my life the most, which would probably be something with organizational functions, but I also think something like a digi-cam would go far to increase my enjoyment of life experiences.

Maybe I should just apply for 2 more credit cards and get 'em all..:D

Get a smartphone with a camera. It would function, in some capacity, as all of the above. Price a 1GB card for it while you're at it for some music, pictures, and a few random videos. If you're going to do a lot of typing, you can always get an external keyboard for it. A keyboard like the one on the Treo is good for typing out an email or two, but not for serious use. You'll also want to look into a case, screen protectors, extra battery, a pen stylus, and a few pieces of software. None of this is required, but it'll make your purchase that much more enjoyable.

Smartphone? I'm not hip to this..enlighten me. Sprint got 'em?

A Laptop is significantly more expensive than the other things you listed (assuming they're of the same level).

I'd go for the digital camera.
Years from now, when you look back at all the pictures you'd have taken, it'll be priceless.

Smartphone = PDA + cell phone

Yes, Sprint carries them but doesn't carry the newer Treo 650, at least not yet. It should be offered soon. Lyte Edge can give you impressions of the older 600. i haven't owned one yet (still stuck in the PDA + cell phone combo days), but it's the model i'm looking at.

It looks bigger than it is. It's roughly the same volume as a pack of cigarettes, just wider, longer, but thinner. Treo isn't the only one with smartphones, there's also the ones running Windows Mobile, but i've got no experience with those.

In terms of digicams, you can get a good model for around $200. i tend to shy away from Sonys due to color reproduction and some optics issues, especially at that price. Canon, Kodak, and Nikon are preferred by me. i'd look at the smartphone first, or at a minimum, a cameraphone with a good camera. Take some pics with that, and see if you're satisfied with the quality. You won't get an optical zoom, nor would you with a $200 digicam, but the always-with-you aspect of a cameraphone or a camera-equipped smartphone is quite nice, especially for day-to-day shots. It's not something you'd want to frame though.

Edit: The camera you posted DOES NOT have optical zoom. It's the one my mom has. Good camera for the price, though i don't like the interface and the LCD is tiny.

WOW now that is pimp shit. That does in fact seem like a jack of all trades. Are there any PDA's with integrated digi-cams? Only reason I ask is that I'd feel weird holding that thing up to my head when it rang. Regardless, I need to look into one of those..it seems to solve virtually all my problems..

Most of the mid to upper level PDAs have cameras. The quality varies from webcam-quality to low-end digital camera quality.

Here's some pics i've taken with my PDA:

Again, not suitable for framing, but good enough. Most PDA cams now are this level or better. Keep in mind that no PDA that i know of has optical zoom, and the highest resolution avaliable on a PDA is 1280x1024 or something like that. Most are still 640x480.

BTW, the Treo i posted has a built-in camera as well.

Ok aoi, you seem to be quite well versed on this stuff, we'll just do it like this:

Digi-cam: Recommend me a good digi-cam for around $200 (not exceeding $225) that you think would be respectable on the "frameability" scale.

PDA: Recommend me a good camera PDA for ~$600 that would give me as much functionality as possible.

Your input has been extremely valuable so far and I think I trust your judgment more than mine with regards to these matters.

find some phone that is flash expandable with a camera, and mp3

I heard Motorolla made a pretty good one.
THere's nothing like having a little tiny toy that does everything!

(Smartphones are too bulkey, the keys are too small, personally I don't see why people them it's not like Palm OS is that great)

Meh....get a PSP. Seems like the gadget to get these days, or I've just been spending too much time in the gaming forum. ;) PEACE.

All "built-in" type cameras are shit. It isn't a resolution problem -- it's a LENS problem. If you want anyone to look at those photos for any reason, get a real digital camera.

The laptop sounds like an expensive toy that you wouldn't even use that much.

PDAs are dying, and quite frankly, if you aren't the kind of person who writes down appointments and to-dos to begin with, purchasing a PDA isn't going to transform you into that guy.

In my opinion, most cellphone gadgets are COMPLETELY overrated. If your phone sounds good and your battery lasts for a decent amount of time, why switch?

iPods are great, and if you do listen to music that much, it might be worthwhile for you.

Personally, if I were you, I'd hold onto your money until you had a clearer idea of what your NEEDS are...buying for the sake of buying usually turns out badly.

Yeah but if feels SOO GOOD. Anyway thanks for the advice. I think I should just get a cheap PDA and a mid-range digi-cam. Those Treo's seem tempting but I'm just extremely hesitant to change my phone plan around..
