Can someone please tell me if the version that’s out right now is worth getting? I recall tons of complaints regarding the quality of the transfer, the print itself, lack of letterboxing, lack of the supposed extra ten minutes of animation, and the Star Wars-esque scroll. Is the one that’s out now the definitive version, or are we getting a better one, or what?

Its worth getting, the transfer is actually amazing quality, letterboxing is something I've heard many stories about, people swear there is a widescreen version but nobody has seen it and rhino swears no such things exists last i heard. The star wars scroll isn't on the dvd version either..it even has the swear word from the canadian version in it.

Jack Flack always escapes!
Compared to my old VHS version, it's way more colorfull and bold looking. Quite a nice transfer. Plus, it's uncensored.

Depends on which you get. There's an American version and a Canadian one.

The American's transfer is very colourful (perhaps a little too colorful) and looks pretty good considering the age.

The Canadian one has a fairly bad transfer. It's not as sharp and the image has a cold, blue tint for the entire movie.

The extras on both are nothing to write home about.

If there is a new DVD coming out, I'd honestly expect it to be released parallel to the new movie, which is coming out in 2006. And no, there is no letterbox version of the movie; there never has been, there never will be. The official line from all the companies involved in putting the current DVD together swear up and down that what was released in theaters was simply matted.

(People will point out stickers as proof, they're reaching.)
