So what 3d engines for developers are out there?

It seems that it will be very expensive to get a decent 3d engine next generation.

UE3.0 is probably the most expensive one. Doom 3 is probably not cheap either, knowing how ID has been with their engines. What other options are there? I haven't heard of anyone using the Crytek engine. There was something called Reality Engine which looked promising but got bought out by Epic. Are there any others? I definately don't want one engine to dominate, which will lead to higher prices for all the developers.

p.s: any ideas on how much the ue3.0 license costs?

UE 3.0 license will run about $800,000 for full blown license, $350,000 if you give Epic 3% royalties. As for other engines, there is Gamebryo, RenderWare (more of a framework), Crytek and a few more that I just cant think of right now. ID tends to be fairly reasonable with their engine costs. There is always Source engine too. Problem with ID and Valve engines is they are PC so you would still have to port them for console, couldnt run it out of the box. Also torque shader engine (PC Engine).

Reality Engine which looked promising

They got squashed like a fucking bug, oh but right before epic grabbed the tech director. Jesus what happened to compition. I really liked how Reality Engine's editor was shaping up it looked very promising.

Gamebryo is one.

I'm sure there are others, many you rarely hear of (but doesn't mean they're not used).

I used to be a big fan of epic from their jazz jackrabit and epic pinball games, but it seems they've totally become corporate whores now. $800,000 for a 3d engine? WTF are they thinking? They start buying out competition as well. I really hope they get a serious competitor though. They also seem to have their PR in favor of whoever gives them the most money (i.e. lots of nvidia asskissing). Renderware is as good as dead for others, with EA owning it.

you can still get a reality engine license i believe.. for now..
nope, according to reality studios website they will no longer be taking licenses, they were allowing anyone with a test kit to purchase the license within one week of the Epic purchase so it looks like that window is closed.
