So what's the deal with Switch 2 and USB C blocking?

Did I hear this right... That Nintendo has included some proprietary code in the USB C connections that prevents the use of any third party USB C dock etc?
It would explain why when I plugged my external Anker battery pack into the unit last night the icon didn't show the usual charging symbol.
If this is the case then that's complete bullshit from Nintendo.
It's like Nintendo wish to crash & burn all goodwill from the Switch 1 era and just fek people off.

I see you are finally looking Nintendo in the eyes. They were always control freaks. In this sense, they are very much like Apple where only their own products should work between each other.

Switch 2 works with all PD charging devices, by default as it supports the standard.

Is your Anker pack old? You need to have a PD pack and be using a USB-C to USB-C cable.

Switch 2 does not support the standard DP Alt protocol for video out over USB-C, nor did the Switch 1. You can however use third party docks if they're compatible with what it wants, Virtue's dock works with a firmware upgrade.

I've always had a distrust of Nintendo, and thought they were money grabbing yahoos which is why I never bought any of their machines post the SNES. Unfortunately I thought I'd jump onboard the Switch 2 train bearing in mind how well the Switch 1 did. But if they're continuing with their usual crap, I think I'll sell the 2 and they can fek aff.
Horrible horrible company.

The answer .. it depends .. something's work something's don't. Has to be some sort of built in rating in the devices not a specific " Nintendo code "

Factual information - we dont do that here.
I heard that not only won't allow 3rd party chargers but if Nintendo detects you are using a non official charger they will brick your console.

I heard if you use anything non-Nintendo, Doug Bowser will break in to your house and upper decker all your toilets.

I have no idea how Nintendo keeps getting away with this stuff. Talk about anti-consumer.

Ahhh, ok, so PD is an additional protocol separate from the standard USB C specs? The power bank I was testing is only a small one, but I hoped it would slow down the Switch 2 battery drain on longer trips. It worked fine with Switch Lite. Saying that the main reason I posted this query was the fact that I read something about Nintendo and USB C non compliance issues only this morning, so was putting 2 & 2 together.
This is the small power device I was referring to... https://www.anker.com/uk/products/a1653-usb-c-portable-charger-5000mah
Everything else I plug it into receives some sort of charge, just not the Switch 2.

My wife has that same power bank. Now I want to test it on my Switch 2.

It's not Nintendos fault that your powerbank is too slow
It's outputting at 9V⎓2,22A or 10V⎓2,25A
While switch 2 needs 9v⎓3A or 15v⎓3A

edit: switch 2 should accept the 5v⎓3A from the powerbank. slowly I guess, but according to applesaucejaxon it does work.

So for what it's worth, I bought my wife this specific power bank when we got our new phones, and I just tested it. It works in the top and bottom USB ports. And I waited to post this until I saw the battery percentage actually go up. It did.

OP, maybe you have a faulty bank or USB port?

Visual proof

Try to plug in an Xbox controller on a playstation console.
Try to plug in an playstation controller on an Xbox console.

Tell me what's the difference between Nintendo and the other platforms, because I fail to see it.

Third party hardware needs to be approved by Nintendo, just like it's the case for playstation and Xbox.

But, of course. Nintendo bad.

And no i ain't defending dog shit Nintendo. But I ain't defending the other platforms either.

Tbh all of them are bad in different ways, and that's where PC is better than consoles. Even with trash like Microsoft, at least, there is the most freedom you can get with PC.

How is it that different from the first switch ?

Some consoles are more proprietary than others. People have complained about that on numerous occassions so this isn't just picking on Nintendo. Folks are pointing at Nintendo here because this issue is specific to Switch 2. Try any third party dock with any other handheld and the vast majority of the times they will work.

My Genki Covert Dock 2 doesn't work and that's annoying. It also doesn't deliver enough power for docked play, so I probably wouldn't use it anyway. I'm hoping they release a new version that will work with Switch 2.

I really appreciate this - thank you!
Now I'm really perplexed. Charges my phone ok, Switch Lite, tablet... but not Switch 2.
The joys.... 🤦‍♂️

They have a proprietary handshake, always had. Serious 3rd parties have that handshake of course, the antank dock has it or otherwise nothing works

Only Switch 2 asks this handshake, not the dock, as the switch 2 dock can actually connect a steam deck via USB-C (and has VRR)

As for OP, not sure why your battery is not working

The handshake has nothing to do with USB-PD compatibility. Peoples are even using Switch 1 USB-PD compatible batteries with Switch 2.

USB-C is neither a video nor a charging standard... it's a connector type.

if your dock or battery bank isn't compatible the correct power delovery and/or video out standards, it won't work

The excuse: "To keep people from hacking the Switch 2."

The reality: It's gonna get hacked anyway. This is about forcing consumers to use proprietary Nintendo products with the Switch 2 rather than cheaper third party hardware.

Exactly. This is such a nothingburger and always was but look at the vitriol in the comments.

Nintendo derangement syndrome folks. Control your neurosis. People are so quick to jump on the hate bandwagon for some shit that never mattered and has been this way for a decade. It's common knowledge but they are just learning about it today and are pissed, lol. Sad.

You should know by now Nintendo only delivers when they have to. A desperate Nintendo is the beloved Nintendo we think of, and it only happens following a disaster, and is followed by arrogant Nintendo. I still think the Switch 2 will be an excellent console and a success, but you will continue to see Nintendo backslide into their control-freak anti-consumer bullshit.
