So what's your videogame story of the year?

Sonycowboy got me thinking about this with his latest NPD thread. In a year where the buzz seems to be about all the major AAA sequels that have been released and the arrival of the new handhelds to me the biggest story is the ground Sega has made up on EA with ESPN NFL 2K5 vs Madden 2005. What was EA's response to the Sega price drop to 19.99 again, something like "they could give it away for free with a ham sandwich and we would still bury them" or something to that effect.

I love it :D

I'm passing on this year, waiting for "Nintendo DS bombs" or, even better, "Nintendo cancels Revolution; agrees to provide two launch games for Sony's Playstation 3"

I await this news.

The handheld wars.

Although I thought this topic was about actual game stories, not news stories about video games

My videogame story of the year takes place in a Target store located outside of Columbus Ohio. A man had just bought himself and Xbox and was browsing over the games available to him for purchase. "I just need one right now" he says. The sales person reaches almost instinctively for Halo (Halo 2 wasn't available yet).

"Is that Red Dead Revolver any good? I like shootin' games"

"Well, Halo is sort of the standard, it did pretty much make the Xbox in the early days." replies the sales person. "We also have Rainbow Six 3 and Ghost Recon"

"No, I'll take an Xbox and the Red Dead Revolver"

The Sales person dies a little inside.

Zelda unveiling at E3. As much as I enjoyed the Cel-shaded direction TWW took, a part of me was filled with joy upon seeing the trailer.

Big mistake. Never tell a customer what they want, especially specific titles. What you say is simply this: "it's alright, got kinda mediocre ratings all around, if yer into western stuff I guess it's okay"

At this point they'll either buy it, which means you never had a chance to sell 'em something else, or they'll specifically ask you for an alternative. When you push a specific title on those sort of folks, you're challenging them and their taste -- all they were asking you for was an affirmation, not an alternative. Give 'em a half-assed affirmation, and they'll question their own taste. But push your tastes on 'em, and they'll ignore you.

The biggest, most pleasant surprise of the year for me was Reggie promising online gaming for DS at E3. The most disappointing development, was when Reggie "clarified" that we wouldn't be seeing network play on the DS in any contemporary gaming sense.

Nintendo can shove the DS up their ass.

Finishing Skies of Arcadia for the first time this year, it took me months all due to me not rushing it. Had the same thing happen with Ocarina of Time.

Zelda, but only casue I was watching the live E3 feed when they unvieled it. If I had just seen a topic on it on GA, it wouldn't have been such a shocker.

Zelda. Definitely Zelda. The atmosphere of that room as the realization of a new mature Zelda swept through...is unforgettable.

Zelda announcement, closely followed by Wanda and the Colossus unveiling.

The Reggie e3 conference & RE4-to-PS2, were probably the funniest stories of the year, forum wise.
